COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Obama goes after the press or is Obama going over the edge?

142 comments:

  1. Obama was going after the press, now the press is going after Obama, and Obama is going over the edge.

Lesson for politicians: do not go after the hyenas in the press, they will turn and clean your bones.

Personally, I think the whole thing is a Kabuki dance.....it was set up. She may have made her statement knowing FULL well she was waiving her 5th amendment protections (on counsel's advice of course). No attorney worth his or her hourly rate would have let her make an opening statement. That would be grounds for legal malfeasance.

She was thrown under the bus by the WH. Her actions may have been planned by her and her lawyer. She may be getting ready to spill the beans. We can only hope. Obviously, Obama thinks that people will continue to destroy their careers and lives to protect his sorry ass. I think he is going to be in for a rude awakening soon.

No, this is not Watergate or Iran-Contra. Nor is it like the sex scandal that got Bill Clinton impeached.

The AP, IRS and Benghazi matters represent a scandal not of presidential wrongdoing, but of presidential indolence, indifference and incompetence in discharging the duties of chief executive.

Barack Obama revealed to us in recent days is something rare in our history: a spectator president, clueless about what is going on in his own household, who reacts to revelations like some stunned bystander.

Consider. Because of a grave national security leak, President Obama’s Department of Justice seized two months of records from 20 telephones used by The Associated Press. An unprecedented seizure.

Yet the president was left completely in the dark. And though he rushed to defend the seizure, he claims he was uninvolved.

While the AP issue does not appear to have legs — we know what was done and why — it has badly damaged this president. For his own Justice Department treated the press, which has an exalted opinion of itself and its role, with the same contempt as the IRS treated the Tea Party.

The episode has damaged a crucial presidential asset. For this Washington press corps had provided this president with a protective coverage of his follies and failings unseen since the White House press of half a century ago covered up the prowlings of JFK.

    {…}

The Benghazi issue is of far greater gravity. Still, Obama’s sins here as well seem to be those of omission, not commission.

The president was apparently completely in the dark about the urgent requests from Benghazi for more security. Obama was also apparently completely out of the loop during the seven-hour crisis of Sept. 11-12, when Ambassador Stevens was assassinated, calls for help from Benghazi were denied and two heroic ex-Navy SEALs died fighting to defend U.S. personnel from the roof of that CIA installation.

No one seems to know where Obama was that night.

The following week, as the State Department, CIA and National Security Council all worked the “talking points” to make it appear that this preplanned terrorist atrocity was a spontaneous event triggered by an anti-Islamic video, Obama knew nothing of the discussions.

Thus, almost a week after the massacre, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice was put on six networks to move the line that we could not have better prepared for what would happen in Benghazi because it was all a spontaneous event triggered by a YouTube video.

Rice’s version was untrue, but consistent with Obama’s campaign message: “Bin Laden is dead, and al-Qaida is on the run.”

Yet if Rice’s credibility was crippled by what she was sent out to parrot, a week after she got the egg all over her face, Obama was himself peddling the same line at the United Nations. Obama, it seems, may have been the last man to know the cover story had collapsed.

As for the IRS’s targeting of Tea Party applications for tax-exempt status, this bureaucratic misconduct began as far back as 2010, when the Tea Party was a national sensation.

Yet, despite Tea Party protests to members of Congress, who made inquiries of the IRS, the discrimination against groups with “Tea Party” and “Patriot” in their names continued, and was extended to groups whose proclaimed mission was to defend the Bill of Rights and the Constitution.

Literally for years this went on. Investigations were begun by the IRS, and the results reported to the Treasury Department.

But nothing was made public before the election of 2012.

This weekend we learned that the White House counsel was told this April about the IRS misconduct and the investigations, but she did not inform President Obama. He learned about it from news reports.

What we have here, it appears, is a government out of control and a president clueless about what is going on in that government.

And that is the best case. For it is difficult to believe the IRS could conduct a full-court press on Obama’s opponents, that IRS higher-ups knew about it, years ago, and that Treasury knew about it before the election — but the White House was kept in the dark about a scandal that could have derailed the Obama campaign.

But whatever Obama knew, he and his allies in Congress bear moral responsibility for denying these Tea Party folks for years their right to participate fully in the politics of their country.

For years, Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and other Democrats have slandered and slurred Tea Party people as enemies of progress — smears echoed by their mainstream press allies.

Should we then be surprised that IRS bureaucrats, hearing this, thought they were doing what was right for America by slow-walking applications for tax exemptions from these same Tea Party folks?

Who demonized the Tea Party people? Who created the climate of contempt? Whoever did gave moral sanction to those IRS agents.

And the Spectator President is right in the vanguard.

  6. Obama, Kerry, McCain, the Neocons and all the usual suspects are in state of high twisted knickers over the fact that Assad may be doing a Lincoln, saving the established State of Syria from the rebels

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, whose government was last year described as close to collapse by groups ranging from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to the armed opposition, may remain in power for years to come.

“The regime is still in place, strong and not going anywhere,” Julien Barnes-Dacey, a senior policy fellow at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said in an interview. Widespread predictions of his demise reflected an “unwillingness to assess the regime’s strength, wishful thinking, a desire for a swift end, and a failure to recognize this is a civil war.”

With government forces advancing on key opposition strongholds, Syria’s opposition leader George Sabra appealed yesterday for rebels to concentrate on the key central city of Al-Qusair and aid 50,000 people trapped inside. In recent weeks, the opposition has lost Otaibah to the east of Damascus after a 37-day battle, the southern town of Sanamein and Aziza near Aleppo in the north.

While the fighting strength of Syria’s army has been reduced to a quarter of its notional 220,000 manpower, according to the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies, the Assad regime has been bolstered by irregular forces including Hezbollah fighters from neighboring Lebanon and Iranian-trained militias.

Syrian government forces entered Al-Qusair this week as part of an offensive to retake the strategic town in Homs province, central Syria. The aim is to secure the highway linking Damascus with the coastal mountain region that forms the Alawite heartland, the regime’s support-base, and cut the rebel resupply lines from Lebanon. The battle is seen as a key test for both sides.

  7. The DC Permanent War Parties, while telling the Russians not to arm the legitimate Union of Syria and want to arm the confederates, terrorists, secessionists and AQ. Meanwhile 67% of ex US military, who actually carried the water for our rulers and masters say “ Hell No!”

It is not the right time to talk about lifting the embargo on arms supplies to the Syrian opposition in light of the Russian-U.S. idea of convening a conference on Syria, Russian permanent envoy to the EU Vladimir Chizhov told Interfax.

"The EU Foreign Affairs Council should consider this issue on May 27. By our estimates, most of the European Union countries are against lifting the embargo,” he said.

“The lifting of the embargo from one of the parties amid the continuing bloody conflict is a risky affair," he said.

“Supplies of more weapons to such conflict areas have never promoted peace," he said.

“The Syrian opposition is quite a motley company of various organizations," Chizhov said.

"Some of them look more moderate but unfortunately have less influence and combat efficiency than the radical groups. Therefore, when someone says that they will supply weapons to some moderate groups and make sure that they do not fall into the hands of extremists, I don't take this talk seriously. And we can’t accept this position,” he said.

    2. Buchanan is an old Jew basher of long standing.

      >>>>Now, Pat Buchanan has long been an anti-Semite. His repulsive publication, The American Conservative, is an isolationist tract featuring the writings of magazine co-founder and open Jew-hater Taki Theodoracopulos, who calls himself a “soi-disant antisemite.” He once characterized Lehman Brothers CEO Richard Fuld as a “very homely, simian-looking Jew who couldn’t punch his way out of a nursery,” and remarked that the United States was in danger of becoming “Israel-occupied territory,” meaning that it would be controlled by “those nice guys who attack rock-throwing youth with armour-piercing missiles.” Said Theodoracopulos, “the way to Uncle Sam’s heart runs through Tel Aviv and Israeli-occupied territory.”

Buchanan himself is little better. He has engaged in Holocaust denial, stating that diesel exhaust couldn’t have killed 850,000 Jews at Treblinka; he’s criticized the U.S. government for its apology for sheltering Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk. William F. Buckley wrote of Buchanan: ”I find it impossible to defend Pat Buchanan against the charge that what he did and said during the period under examination amounted to anti-Semitism.”<<<<

Yes, the Assads and the Israeli, they rank close of the equivalency scale.
The Assad's, more anti-Wahhabi than the Israeli.

    1) All of the bitumen that's being produced in the tar sands is already getting to the U.S. in existing pipelines.

    2) One of the reasons for the pipeline is to pick up crude from the Bakken, and they might be having a hard time getting commitments from the Bakken Producers. The Bakken looks like it is going to "top out" this year, and the decline, once it sets in, could be swift.

In WiO's world if you criticize Israel you are classified as an anti-Semite.

Actually ash, no your are wrong. Israelis and Jews criticize Israel on an hourly basis, decent people of all faiths can criticize Israel on many issues.

That doesn't make the an anti-semite.

Now for you to make that charge? It's offensive. If Deuce had only post one or two column about something Israel did wrong, in proportion to all the other nations in the area (since this blog is NOT about Israel) and if this blog had posted even a 20% positive rate about Israel verses the almost daily hit pieces on Israel, Bibi, American Jews etc then you might have a point.

This blog over the course of thousands of threads, and who knows how many posts have sought to de-ligitmze the State of Israel, it's leaders and it's actions, coupled with attacks on American Jews and AIPAC the opinion is clear.

So I actually think your point that "In WiO's world if you criticize Israel you are classified as an anti-Semite." is quite frankly? FULL OF SHIT

      have a nice day

    10. Ash, there really is a lot of that going around these days. Criticizing Israel when one is really after 'the Jews'.

If you keep your eyes open, you will see it.

Israel, like all nations, is open to criticism.

I think it is a remarkable place, a remarkable achievement.

Believe it or not, I could think of ways to criticize Israel, but don't do so much, as to me the positives so heavily outweigh the negatives. And to me it is like criticizing one's cultural ancestors. And really what is the point of that, when the influence has been such a good one?

Many of the people that came early here from Europe felt they were crossing the Red Sea themselves, an image they often used. And they built finally a Republic - if we can keep it - that has been finally basically good to us all.

riiiight, just keep your eyes open and you will see behind the curtain to the real motive as opposed to actual criticism of Israel. Do you really think Deuce's criticism of Israel is simply a function of his hatred for people of the Jewish race....errrr, faith?

Ash the modern movement of deligitimizing Israel as anti-zionism is anti-semitism

That is not the same as having issue with or criticizing Israel.

Arguing that Israel has no right to exist?

      anti-semitism

criticizing Israel's settlements? affairs, politics? fair game.

Now if all you do is find fault with israel and NEVER have anything nice to say? and all you do is find fault with american jews as "traitors" to the USA? and if you hold israel to ONE standard and no one to any standard?

Then when pressed it changes to something complete in a different league.

Anti-zionism is the modern day anti-Semitism.

If you feel that only americans, arabs, canadians, russians and all other peoples of the world are allowed statehood (that are already a state that is) but somehow you hold a special hatred for the State of Israel, a member state of the UN. Yes.

Deuce applies one standard to israel and almost no standards to anyone else. He has gotten better at bashing other nations, including the USA. However to be "fair" Israel is just one nation out of hundreds, it population is less than 10 million it's land foot print is tiny and yet deuce focuses on Israel, jews, Bibi in a disproportionate way.

Given the scum that are attracted to the opinions that Deuce puts out about bibi, Aipac, Israel it's a wonder to figure out why so much IRRATIONAL hatred for Israel, Bibi, AIPAC, Americans that support Israel and so on...

Answer your own question, go back and look at the blog threads in the last 5 years. Trashing Israel, Jews, AIPAC & Bibi are a major focus...

      WHY??

      Delete
    17. WiO,

      Why is criticizing Zionism anti-Semitic?

      from wiki:

"Zionism (Hebrew: ציונות‎, Tsiyonut; Arabic: صهيونية‎, Șahyouniyyah) is a form of nationalism of Jews and Jewish culture that supports a Jewish nation state in the territory defined as the Land of Israel.[1] Zionism supports Jews upholding their Jewish identity, opposes the assimilation of Jews into other societies and has advocated the return of Jews to Israel as a means for Jews to be a majority in their own nation,..."

"The Land of Israel (Hebrew: אֶרֶץ יִשְׂרָאֵל ʼÉreṣ Yiśrāʼēl, Eretz Yisrael) is a name for the territory roughly corresponding to the area encompassed by the Southern Levant (also known in English as Land of Canaan, Palestine, the Promised Land, or simply the Holy Land)."

It seems to me perfectly reasonable and not anti-Semitic to believe that the Israel should not be entitled to all the land as defined by the bible and it is also not anti-Semitic to believe that Israeli citizenship, alone among the nations in the world, to be defined by a racial/faith criteria. To dispute these issues is NOT anti-Semitic. In fact some Jews are not on board with Zionism.

    18. ash: It seems to me perfectly reasonable and not anti-Semitic to believe that the Israel should not be entitled to all the land as defined by the bible

Where did I say I support all lands as defined by the bible?

Israel's borders are no where near that.

ASH: and it is also not anti-Semitic to believe that Israeli citizenship, alone among the nations in the world, to be defined by a racial/faith criteria. To dispute these issues is NOT anti-Semitic. In fact some Jews are not on board with Zionism.

Again, where do you get your facts? Thousands of non-jews get citizenship in Israel every year. 20% of Israel is arab.

Ash: it is also not anti-Semitic to believe that Israeli citizenship, alone among the nations in the world, to be defined by a racial/faith criteria.

Saudi Arabia? Are you allowed to be a citizen of that nation as a Jew?

      Again you are running around....

ASH: To dispute these issues is NOT anti-Semitic.

To deligitimize the right for Israel to be a Jewish state is anti-semitic.

ASH: In fact some Jews are not on board with Zionism.

Sure and some Jews love ham, crossdressing and taking it up the ass? So?

I love the "some jews" argument...

      completely bullshit.

If you cannot accept the right of jewish self determination in a state called Israel? you are an antisemite.

If you have an issue with the borders of Israel? fine.

If you support every other group such as the palestinians, the egyptian, the americans, the canadians, the germans all to have the right to a homeland and you do not offer the same for the Jews??? Besides being a hypocritical prick? You are an anti-semite.

Package it any way you want, argue that the Jews have no right to the western wall of the temple, say that israel sucks for all I care, that doesnt make you an anti-semite. Say that only the Jews in the world have no rights to self determination? can you say anti-semite.

Why do you insist on changing the argument when you get cornered?

      Delete
    19. No, I am not changing the argument when getting cornered but it appears you are.

Is not Zionism the desire to have Israel as defined by biblical Israel or are you adopting a more watered down version of Zionism which simply wants a state for Jews?

One can have no problem with Jews, thus not being anti-Semitic, and still believe that Israel should not occupy the biblical lands as promised.

Also one can have no problem with Jews, thus not being anti-Semitic, and still believe that Israel defined as a Jewish state is problematic.

It is you that is conflating criticism of Zionism with being anti-Semitic.

I found this interesting bit online:

"Zionism and Judaism - Opponents of Zionism and anti-Semites have sometimes identified all Jews as "Zionists" and used the terms "Jew" and Zionist interchangeably. For example, the Hamas charter lays the blame for the French Revolution on "Zionists" - though there were no Zionists in the 18th century. They clearly mean "Jews." Conversely, others have claimed that Zionism is not, and was never, representative of views of the majority of Jews. From its inception, Zionism enjoyed wide popular support, particular in Eastern Europe and Russia. Most German Jews were probably not Zionists, but Germany was the center of the Zionist movement for many years. Jewish financiers and philanthropists, however, most of whom were Western Europeans, were largely indifferent to Zionism and reluctant to finance settlement in Palestine. In the United States, Zionism became popular among Jews thanks to the leadership of Justice Louis Brandeis, but most American Jews supported Zionism as a solution for other Jews. They have been active Zionists in the sense of contributing money for settlement in Palestine and Israel and offering political support, but not to the extent of settling in Palestine or Israel themselves. A small minority of American Jews remains actively and vocally anti-Zionist, and many profess indifference. Some new groups, such as Brit Tsedek veshalom and J Street use the term "pro-Israel" and avoid the words "Zionism" and "Zionist." Their motivation for avoiding the word "Zionism" is not clear, since they claim to support Israel as the state of the Jewish people, which is the heart of Zionist ideology. Some studies have shown that "Zionism" and "Jew" have negative connotations even among Jews. "

      whoa there bucky....

you did change your argument when cornered.

Being critical of Israel aint the same thing as being an anti-zionist.

My views on zionism are directly aligned with Israel's. this position was enshrined in 1948 when the modern state was reborn.

And that zionist dream of a state of Israel for the Jewish homeland is the zionist dream. jewish self determination.

No where is zionism defined specifically from the river to the sea. that's why Jews that have led the state of Israel compromised and accepted a much smaller state than the league of nations promised.

stick to the specific issue you start with without distraction or wiggling...

Is Israel a Religious or a Secular State?

      By Austin Cline, About.com GuideJuly 23, 2006

      http://atheism.about.com/b/2006/07/23/is-israel-a-religious-or-a-secular-state.htm

      >>>
Ever since its creation, there have been debates and disagreements about the nature of the state of Israel. Formally, it's a secular democracy where Judaism is privileged; in reality, many orthodox Jews believe that Israel should be a theocratic state where Judaism is the supreme law of the land. Secular and orthodox Jews are at odds over the future of Israel and it's uncertain what will happen.

Eric Silver writes in the February, 1990 issue of Political Quarterly:

Israel’s Proclamation of Independence makes few concessions to the Almighty. The word ‘God’ does not appear, though there is a passing reference to trusting in the ‘Rock of Israel’. Israel, it decrees, will be a Jewish state, but the concept is nowhere defined. The state, it says, ‘will be based on the principles of liberty, justice and peace as conceived by the Prophets of Israel; will uphold the full social and political equality of all its citizens, without distinction of religion, race, or sex; will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, education and culture; will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and will loyally uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter’.

Every student of modern Israel should reread the proclamation of May 14, 1948, at least once a year. It is a reminder of the secular vision of the founding fathers. Israel was to be a modern democratic state, an expression of Jewish nationalism rather than Jewish faith. The text reads as if the drafting committee was more familiar with the American and French revolutions than with the intricacies of Talmud. The phrase ‘as conceived by the Prophets of Israel’ is little more than rhetoric. Which of the Prophets were they talking about? Immediately after a clause proclaiming the ‘establishment of the Jewish State in Palestine’, the document promises that a constitution will be drawn up by a constituent assembly ‘not later than 1 October, 1948’. Forty-one years later, the people of Israel are still waiting, not least because of a reluctance by successive governments to define (and thus calcify) the Jewishness of the Jewish state.<<<

This article seems to give some basic balance to the issue.

It is certainly not like the theocracies in Saudi Arabia or Iran, it is not the Vatican.

Yet it is a special place for all Jews. After 20 centuries of persecution, they deserve it, and have earned it.

It is much more like.....the United States in a way, where Christianity has until recently had something of a privileged position.

There are however some other of his ideas that would go over well here. Kind of a libertarian type guy these days in many ways. There are a lot worse people out there. He's an old line Catholic type.

  27. On Jews

Buchanan referred to Capitol Hill as "Israeli-occupied territory." (St. Louis Post Dispatch, 10/20/90)

During the Gulf crisis: "There are only two groups that are beating the drums for war in the Middle East -- the Israeli defense ministry and its 'amen corner' in the United States." (McLaughlin Group, 8/26/90)

In a 1977 column, Buchanan said that despite Hitler's anti-Semitic and genocidal tendencies, he was "an individual of great courage.... Hitler's success was not based on his extraordinary gifts alone. His genius was an intuitive sense of the mushiness, the character flaws, the weakness masquerading as morality that was in the hearts of the statesmen who stood in his path." (Guardian, 1/14/92)

Writing of "group fantasies of martyrdom," Buchanan challenged the historical record that thousands of Jews were gassed to death by diesel exhaust at Treblinka: "Diesel engines do not emit enough carbon monoxide to kill anybody." (New Republic, 10/22/90) Buchanan's columns have run in the Liberty Lobby's Spotlight, the German-American National PAC newsletter and other publications that claim Nazi death camps are a Zionist concoction.

Buchanan called for closing the U.S. Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations, which prosecuted Nazi war criminals, because it was "running down 70-year-old camp guards." (New York Times, 4/21/87)

Buchanan was vehement in pushing President Reagan -- despite protests -- to visit Germany's Bitburg cemetery, where Nazi SS troops were buried. At a White House meeting, Buchanan reportedly reminded Jewish leaders that they were "Americans first" -- and repeatedly scrawled the phrase "Succumbing to the pressure of the Jews" in his notebook. Buchanan was credited with crafting Ronald Reagan's line that the SS troops buried at Bitburg were "victims just as surely as the victims in the concentration camps." (New York Times, 5/16/85; New Republic, 1/22/96)

After Cardinal O'Connor criticized anti-Semitism during the controversy over construction of a convent near Auschwitz, Buchanan wrote: "If U.S. Jewry takes the clucking appeasement of the Catholic cardinalate as indicative of our submission, it is mistaken. When Cardinal O'Connor of New York seeks to soothe the always irate Elie Wiesel by reassuring him 'there are many Catholics who are anti-Semitic'...he speaks for himself. Be not afraid, Your Eminence; just step aside, there are bishops and priests ready to assume the role of defender of the faith." (New Republic, 10/22/90)

The Buchanan '96 campaign's World Wide Web site included an article blaming the death of White House aide Vincent Foster on the Israeli intelligence agency, Mossad -- and alleging that Foster and Hillary Clinton were Mossad spies. (The campaign removed the article after its existence was reported by a Jewish on-line news service; Jewish Telegraphic Agency, 2/21/96.)

In his September 1993 speech to the Christian Coalition, Buchanan declared: "Our culture is superior. Our culture is superior because our religion is Christianity and that is the truth that makes men free." (ADL Report, 1994)

To claim Christianity superior, not antisemitic.
No more than proclaiming Judaism to be the font of civilization is contra-Christian.

Not once, in your examples did Buchanan defile Judaism or Jews.

These are hard days for you, Rufus.

Barky is being shown to be an out and out thug.

    I understand.

    You are a good person.

Don't feel your reputation suffers because of Barky's misdeeds, his tearing up of the Constitution, his lying, his enemies list, his targeting of fellow citizens, his leaving fellow citizens to die at Benghazi, his advocacy of putting children who survive abortions in a 'comfort room' to die, his sympathy with muslims, his disdain of Israel.

This is not you, Rufus, it is Barky.

All anyone is asking is that you wake up a bit.

A pastime in their 'community' is raping blue eyed, blond haired Swedish girls.

I forget the percentage, but a high percentage have been raped, beaten up.

1 in 4 Swedish Women Will Be Raped by Muslims as Sexual Assaults Increase 500%

      February 6, 2013 | Posted in Anti-White Crime, Current News, Sweden |

Sweden has imported huge numbers of Muslim immigrants with catastrophic effect.

Sweden’s population grew from 9 million to 9.5 million in the years 2004-2012, mainly due to immigration from “countries like Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia”. 16 percent of all newborns have mothers born in non-Western countries. Employment rate among immigrants: 54 percent.

Sweden now has the second highest number of rapes in the world, after South Africa, which at 53.2 per 100,000 is six times higher than the United States. Statistics now suggest that 1 out of every 4 Swedish women will be raped.

Read the information about Sweden, Ash, then get back to me.

And, my views are not racist, but they are distinctly tending to the view that Moslems and others don't seem to get along well together.

Why, just the other day a British citizen, a recent convert to Islam, beheaded a stranger on the streets of London.

Then showed off his bloody hands, shouting God Is Great, and we will always fight you.

Ash, I really don't care to be around such people.

Meanwhile, just today I showed an apartment to a nice American black woman student, and her Asian friend.

    Poll: Brutal numbers for Obamacare

posted at 12:02 pm on May 23, 2013 by Guy Benson

Last month, a Kaiser Foundation poll pegged Obamacare’s public support at a tepid 35 percent. A new survey from Fox News confirms that finding. Asked if they’d rather to keep the new law in place or erase it from the history books and revert back to the 2009 system, Americans say they’d strongly prefer turning back the clock:

    22. Do you think it would be better to leave the new health care law in place, or would it be better to go back to the health care system that was in place in 2009?

Better to keep law: 34 percent
Better to go back to previous system: 56 percent

The president’s signature legislative accomplishment is underwater by double digits on this question among every measured demographic — including women, independents and young voters — with the exceptions of registered Democrats and non-whites. The public’s rationale isn’t too complicated. They believe the “Affordable Care Act” will make their families’ lives worse:

    23. In general, how do you expect your health care situation will change as the Affordable Care Act or Obamacare goes into effect — will you and your family be better off or worse off under the new health care law?

    Better off: 26 percent
    Worse off: 53 percent

Implementation begins in earnest next year, and even the law’s staunchest supporters aren’t expecting great things for the grand roll-out. Mix in the radioactive IRS’ enforcement mandate, plus another Fox poll finding that fully 68 percent of the public views the federal government as “out of control,” and you’d at least think that Republicans have a killer narrative on their hands for 2014.

  32. .

I blast Obama every day for overreach and abuse; yet there is no denying that the Hawks and neocons in the GOP are just as bad if not worse.

“The president’s speech today will be viewed by terrorists as a victory,” said Sen. Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), the ranking Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee. “Rather than continuing successful counterterrorism activities, we are changing course with no clear operational benefit.”

Chambliss was also critical of Obama’s plans to try to close Guantanamo, signaling the obstacles that the president will face in Congress.

Rep. Edward R. Royce, the California Republican who is chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, weighed in with similar criticism. “The troubling reality is that the president continues to underestimate the serious threat that al-Qaeda and its affiliated and inspired terrorists present to Americans,” Royce said in a statement. “Now is not the time to abandon robust efforts to keep Americans safe.”

      Where is the IRS here?

They may well be as bad but I don't see it in these statements, which seem supportive of Obama's own (previous) policy.

  36. Michael Kurtz, Hong Kong-based strategist and head of global equity strategy at Nomura, the Japanese investment bank, said the decline appeared to reflect shorter-term tactical moves by traders, rather than a more durable change in thinking among longer-term investors about Japan's prospects. He still sees Japanese stocks as cheap.

While the Fed's latest hints of tapering off its stimulus and the disappointing Chinese manufacturing report may have triggered some investor worries Thursday, Mr. Kurtz said neither "rises to the level of a deep fundamental impairment of Japan's medium-term growth and equity-return prospects."

"In a few weeks' time, we suspect this event will likely be looked back on as having been a helpful buying opportunity," Mr. Kurtz told clients.

The husband picks up a case of Budweiser and puts it in their cart.

"What do you think you're doing?" asks the wife.

"They're on sale, only £10 for 24 cans" he replies.

"Put them back, we can't afford them" demands the wife, and so they carry on shopping.

A few aisles further on along the woman picks up a £20 jar of face cream and puts it in the basket.

"What do you think you're doing?" asks the husband.

"It's my face cream. It makes me look beautiful," replies the wife.

Her husband retorts: "So does 24 cans of Budweiser and it's half the price."

On average, the most affordable “silver plan” – which covers 70 percent of the average subscriber’s medical costs – comes with a $276 monthly premium. For the 2.6 million Californians who will receive federal subsidies, the price is a good deal less expensive, the amount noted in green below.

No doubt many determinedly ‘green’ and and environmentalist Europeans will argue that it’s all worth for the sake of protecting future generations from a ravaged climate… and yet somehow, it’s the United States that has lately been pretty darn successful at bringing down carbon emissions without self-imposed vows of imagined renewable chastity.<<
