If you happened to be staring up into the sky Friday, 17 May, 2013, you would have seen a little piece of history. Specifically, you would have seen a big ol' hunk of space rock kissing the moon, generating the biggest lunar explosion that NASA has seen since scientists first started watching Earth's orbiting companion for such things in 2005.
An amazing recording. Probably helps to have been there.

ReplyDeleteCapital Powerball: Scandals Grease Washington's Wheels
By Clarice Feldman
After running an errand at the Courthouse, I decided to pop into the Barrister Bar and Bistro for a quick bite. The place was packed and Charlie, the maitre d', shrugged his shoulders apologetically. "There's a huge party here this afternoon, but I can seat you at the bar if you don't mind."
I didn't mind and was happy to see that my favorite bartender, Joe, was at work,
I pulled out USA Today and read until he was free: "After February 2010, the IRS didn't approve a single Tea Party tax-exempt application until spring 2012, although it approved dozens of comparable applications from liberal groups." Some coincidence, I thought. Just after Citizens United, the President's outrageous temper tantrum about it at the State of the Union address, his constant demonizing of his opponents, the tea party in particular, and demands by key Democrats including Senators Baucus, Franken, Schumer, Reid, and Levin that the applications for 501(c)(4) status by the president's opponents be subject to harsh scrutiny.
"Place is jammed. I've never seen it so packed. What's up?" I asked as Joe placed my vodka tonic in front of me. "Looks like every former U.S. Attorney in town is here."
He pressed in closer so that he wouldn't be overheard.
"Celebration of the scandals. They are about to make more money defending these clowns than they ever dreamed of. Second terms are always more lucrative for them than first, but this is the ultimate jackpot. Like winning the Powerball."
The bar was mirrored so even with my back to the crowd I could see what was going on. In the center of the room at a round table sat one of the president's biggest campaign bundlers, an extremely well garbed man -- hand-tailored navy suit, lustrous silk tie, crisp shirt and glittering cufflinks -- with a great haircut. He was seated with a group of well-sloshed men and women all of whom were drinking heartily.
Suddenly everyone stood up for the toast.
"Here's to George," began his colleague. "We asked why we should support Obama after that disastrous first term and he said, 'Cast your crumbs upon the water and you'll get fig newtons back.'"
"And he was right!" came a shout from the rear and a wild round of applause followed.
Aside from the circular table in the middle where George and his cronies sat, there were seven tables.
"What are the colored badges for?" I asked.
"They signify which scandal defendants they are representing so they can exchange useful procedural and related information without disclosing who they are representing or breaching client confidentiality. The orange tag means the attorney is representing someone in the Benghazi scandal."
Delete"I see seven -- probably Petraeus, Clinton, Rice, Donilon, Brennan, Nuland, Rhodes. And the blue badge?" I asked, sipping the drink.
"IRS scandal," George whispered, wiping the counter to appear more inconspicuous.
"Hmm," I thought, "Shulman, Ingram, Miller, Lerner, and some others to be named at a later date. And the red badge?"
"Small table -- must be Justice officials on the Associated Press scandal."
"Yeah, so far Holder and his deputy Cole. Will Cole cover for Holder who preposterously testified he recused himself because he speaks to the press, that he can't remember when he recused himself, and that he didn't follow the statutory mandate for recusal procedure?"
"You did notice," Joe laughed, "that the 'security breach' which Holder claims occasioned the wiretapping of reporters turns out to be AP waiting to publish until they got the CIA's approval but before the White House crowd could publicly pat themselves on the back for getting the underwear bomber?"
"Wasn't that something? The whole story is too flimsy to hold a drop of water and even the press can grasp this one."
George refreshed my drink and took my lunch order. "Yellow badges?"
"EPA -- selective fines and fees and fake e-mail accounts to avoid detection of secret coordination of the head of the agency and environmentalists."
"Brown?"
He placed a tablemat and the silver setting down, and leaned in. "HHS, Sebelius strong-arming those who are being regulated by her to kick in and make Obamacare operable."
"And that very long table of purple badges?"
"Whistleblowers."
The toast having ended, George flicked on the switch for some music. It was Theodore Bikel, a suitable choice:
And zere is singink, and zere is dancink,
And ze Russian vomen is alright;
Come to ze kretchma, zet's vere you'll ketch me(h)
Drinkink wodka every night.
Waiters circled the room with platters of caviar, foie gras, filet mignon, and lobster.
Joe signaled to the maitre d', who allowed in a crowd that had been gathering expectantly outside -- architects, real estate agents, jewelers, furriers, interior designers, high end merchandisers, luxury auto salesmen -- all of whom surrounded the tables showing pictures of their wares and taking orders.
"Aren't the voters of America great to D.C.?" Joe asked. "They send these clowns here and the clowns, in turn, pay us to keep them out of jail."

DeleteOfficials found guilty in Obama, Clinton ballot petition fraud
By Eric Shawn
Published April 26, 2013
FoxNews.com
((((A jury in South Bend, Indiana has found that fraud put President Obama and Hillary Clinton on the presidential primary ballot in Indiana in the 2008 election. Two Democratic political operatives were convicted Thursday night in the illegal scheme after only three hours of deliberations. They were found guilty on all counts.
Former longtime St. Joseph County Democratic party Chairman Butch Morgan Jr. was found guilty of felony conspiracy counts to commit petition fraud and forgery, and former county Board of Elections worker Dustin Blythe was found guilty of felony forgery counts and falsely making a petition, after being accused of faking petitions that enabled Obama, then an Illinois Senator, to get on the presidential primary ballot for his first run for the White House.))))
Morgan was accused of being the mastermind behind the plot.
According to testimony from two former Board of Election officials who pled guilty, Morgan ordered Democratic officials and workers to fake the names and signatures that Obama and Clinton needed to qualify for the presidential race. Blythe, then a Board of Elections employee and Democratic Party volunteer, was accused of forging multiple pages of the Obama petitions.
"I think this helped uphold the integrity of the electoral system," the prosecutor, Stan Levco told reporters.

In the beginning was the bubble. There have been many, many books about the excesses of the boom years—in fact, too many books. For as we’ll see, the urge to dwell on the lurid details of the boom, rather than trying to understand the dynamics of the slump, is a recurrent problem for economics and economic policy. For now, suffice it to say that by the beginning of 2008 both America and Europe were poised for a fall. They had become excessively dependent on an overheated housing market, their households were too deep in debt, their financial sectors were undercapitalized and overextended.
ReplyDeleteAll that was needed to collapse these houses of cards was some kind of adverse shock, and in the end the implosion of US subprime-based securities did the deed. By the fall of 2008 the housing bubbles on both sides of the Atlantic had burst, and the whole North Atlantic economy was caught up in “deleveraging,” a process in which many debtors try—or are forced—to pay down their debts at the same time.
Why is this a problem? Because of interdependence: your spending is my income, and my spending is your income. If both of us try to reduce our debt by slashing spending, both of our incomes plunge—and plunging incomes can actually make our indebtedness worse even as they also produce mass unemployment.
Students of economic history watched the process unfolding in 2008 and 2009 with a cold shiver of recognition, because it was very obviously the same kind of process that brought on the Great Depression. Indeed, early in 2009 the economic historians Barry Eichengreen and Kevin O’Rourke produced shocking charts showing that the first year of the 2008–2009 slump in trade and industrial production was fully comparable to the first year of the great global slump from 1929 to 1933.
So was a second Great Depression about to unfold? The good news was that . . . . . .
How the Case for Austerity has Crumbled
Yes, looking back you can see signs of danger in 2008:
Delete"For now, suffice it to say that by the beginning of 2008 both America and Europe were poised for a fall."
Fact is, I was reporting on the onrushing freight train at the bar in 2006 and 2007, specifically the case of New Century Financial.
•First quarter 2006 - The rapid pace of home price appreciation ends. However, New Century and the mortgage industry in general continues to originate subprime loans under the previously valid assumption that subprime borrowers will be able to refinance out of adjustable-rate mortgages. Wall Street continues to churn out subprime MBS, ABS, and CDOs that are easily sold to investors.
•Fourth quarter 2006 - Things begin to fall apart. The assumptions used in automated credit underwriting engines are proved to be invalid as the percentage of subprime loans in default begins to rise. Investor appetite for subprime securities dries up. Loan repurchase requirements for New Century and other subprime originators increases as early payment defaults rise. This is because mortgages sold into the secondary market frequently have clauses stating the mortgage must be repurchased if it goes into default within a certain period of time.
•February 2007 - Several large mortgage lenders run into problems, beginning with HSBC's well-publicized exit from the business at a $10.6 billion loss. Creditors quit lending short-term money - the lifeline of non-bank mortgage companies - to mortgage companies. Without the ability to borrow money, and with loan repurchases increasing, the party comes to an abrupt end for many subprime lenders.
•March 8, 2007 - New Century stops accepting new loan applications. It announces margin calls to its lenders of $150 million.
•March 12, 2007 - The company's shares lose 90% of their value and its $1.5 billion market capitalization is wiped out. Trading in the New Century Financial is halted on the NYSE.
•April 2, 2007 - New Century Financial files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and lays off 3,200 people (54% of its workforce).

I said it was gonna be big, you replied you thought it would turn out to be "a mere ripple in the pond."

3. Tom Daschle, the first HHS nominee cheated on his taxes

5. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner cheated on his taxes
6. US Trade Representative Ron Kirk cheated on his taxes
7. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis’s (husband) cheated on their

8. Harry Reid - cheated on his taxes and very publicly falsely accused Romney of doing same.

A comment I posted in May 2007:
DeletePressure at Mortgage Firm Led To Mass Approval of Bad Loans
Monday, May 7, 2007; A01
Maggie Hardiman cringed as she heard the salesmen knocking the sides of desks with a baseball bat as they walked through her office. Bang! Bang!
" 'You cut my [expletive] deal!' " she recalls one man yelling at her. " 'You can't do that.' "
Bang! The bat whacked the top of her desk.
As an appraiser for a company called New Century Financial, Hardiman was supposed to weed out bad mortgage applications. Most of the mortgage applications Hardiman reviewed had problems, she said.
But "you didn't want to turn away a loan because all hell would break loose," she recounted in interviews. When she did, her bosses often overruled her and found another appraiser to sign off on it.
Hardiman's account is one of several from former employees of New Century that shed fresh light on an unfolding disaster in the mortgage industry, one that could cost as many as 2 million American families their homes and threatens to spill over into the broader economy.
---
Shares in the Irvine, Calif., company rose from $5 in early 2001 to $66 at the end of 2004, cementing its status as a Wall Street favorite. Last year it issued $51.6 billion in loans, more than any other specialized subprime mortgage lender.
As Industry Grew, Standards Loosened
Once a little-used lending tool, subprime loans made up 20 percent, or about $600 billion, of all mortgages issued in the country last year. These loans carry a high risk of default because they generally are made to home buyers with questionable credit. But because they require borrowers to pay high interest rates, they have been a gold mine for lenders in recent years, accounting for 30 percent of all profits made in the mortgage business, according to Mercer Oliver Wyman, a consulting firm.
Lenders also made a fortune selling subprime loans to Wall Street. Investment banks charged huge fees for packaging them into massive bonds called mortgage-backed securities. Investors received high returns for buying and selling these bonds.
But there is growing evidence that along this chain, the filters that were supposed to catch bad loans did not work.

DeleteHaleakala Telescopes at Night
ReplyDeleteI like this one.
ReplyDeleteAE0S:
Delete"Spanning over 30 years, the evolution of the Maui Space Surveillance System has demonstrated several stages in the history of space object tracking telescopes. Currently, through its primary mission for Air Force Space Command, the Maui Space Surveillance System combines large-aperture tracking optics with visible and infrared sensors to collect data on near Earth and deep-space objects.
The 3.67-meter telescope, known as the Advanced Electro-Optical System (AEOS), owned by the Department of Defense, is the United States' largest optical telescope designed for tracking satellites.
The 75-ton AEOS telescope points and tracks very accurately, yet is fast enough to track both low-Earth satellites and ballistic missiles.
AEOS can be used simultaneously by many groups or institutions because its light can be channeled through a series of mirrors to seven independent coudé rooms below the telescope.
Employing sophisticated sensors that include an adaptive optics system, radiometer, spectrograph, and long-wave infrared imager, the telescope tracks man-made objects in deep space and performs space object identification data collection.
AEOS is equipped with an adaptive optics system, the heart of which is a 941-actuator deformable mirror that can change its shape to remove the atmosphere's distorting effects. Scientists are expected to get near diffraction-limited images of space objects. "
