This poor bastard thought it was an ICBM!
From the Independent
A meteor streaked across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and injuring more than 400 people, many of them hurt by broken glass.
"There was panic. People had no idea what was happening. Everyone was going around to people's houses to check if they were OK," said Sergey Hametov, a resident of Chelyabinsk, about 1500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow, the biggest city in the affected region.
"We saw a big burst of light then went outside to see what it was and we heard a really loud thundering sound," he told The Associated Press by telephone.
Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said more than 400 people had sought medical treatment after the blasts, and at least three had been hospitalized in serious condition. Many of the injuries were from glass broken by the explosions.
Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.
Reports conflicted on what exactly happened in the clear skies. A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteor.
Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.
Russian news reports noted that the meteor hit less than a day before the asteroid 2012 DA14 is to make the closest recorded pass of an asteroid - about 17,150 miles (28,000 kilometers). There was no immediate demonstrable connection.
Small pieces of space debris — usually parts of comets or asteroids — that are on a collision course with the Earth are called meteoroids. When meteoroids enter the Earth's atmosphere they are called meteors. Most meteors burn up in the atmosphere, but if they survive the frictional heating and strike the surface of the Earth they are called meteorites.

ReplyDeleteThe Defense Department is reportedly inventing a new medal designed to reward soliders who fight battles from the safety of their computer consoles. The Associated Press says the Pentagon is creating a new ribbon, called the Distinguished Warfare Medal that will be given for “extra achievement” related to a military operation. That would include drone pilots operating unmanned planes from halfway around the world, or even hackers who launch a successful cyberattack on an enemy. Unlike all other combat-related medals, this would be the first one that you can be awarded without actually putting your life on the line.
While the move will undoubtedly rankle some of the infantrymen and Special Forces veterans who get shot at on a near daily basis during their combat deployments, the Pentagon is eager to find some way to recognize the achievements of those who are fighting modern battles, but just happen to be doing so from a computer lab or flight simulator instead of the war zone.
How about a skull and crossbones? Perhaps add a double lightening bolt for additional drama.

A senior al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula leader who is wanted for his involvement in the USS Cole attack in 2000 and a failed airplane bombing over Detroit in 2009, and who currently leads a terrorist cell in Yemen, was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen today. AQAP confirmed the report.

ReplyDeleteI would suggest these guys might prefer to have a job waiting for them when thay got out rather than a medal now.
But then maybe these guys will never get out. Who could pass up a cushy job where you get to work your XBOX all day, every day?
Likewise, you couldn't even quote your accomplishments on a job application because it is considered 'Top Secret'. Maybe you could just show the potential employer the medal.
At least, it would show him you have the manual dexterity to work on an assembly line.
I wonder how long it will be before we outsource the drone operator job to India. I'm being serious. About a third of our intelligence people are currently contract employees. How long before the contractors start sub-contracting this work to save money?

Did anyone see the pictures of that car they shot up in CA while looking for Dornen? It sure caught the two Latina ladies by surprise.
Two Latino women delivering newspapers were shot by Torrance undercover Los Angeles police this morning simply because they were in a Nissan truck similar to that Dorner may have been driving. Please check out this photo of that truck and keep in mind that Dorner is a 6’4″ black male. There’s no way the cops could have made any sort of visual identification of the people in this truck and mistaken either of them for Dorner. And wouldn’t a second person in the truck, who might have been a hostage, preclude them from using deadly force? Shouldn’t the fact that the license plate was not Dorner’s have kept them from emptying their guns into the back window of this truck? Or maybe the fact that the truck was the wrong color and model? Somehow, the two women escaped death; one was shot in the back twice and is expected to recover and the other was shot in the hand was injured by broken glass. A second shooting, which involved Torrance police firing at a vehicle which also turned out not to be Dorner’s, miraculously did not cause any injuries.
The car is likely totalled but at least LA has offered to provide a rental car, well, you know...when the women is actually able to drive a car again.
Witnesses in the neighborhood said that seven cops were eventually involved in the shooting and over 70 bullets were fired. The neighborhood around the incident is now riddled with bullet holes, houses, garages, and even roofs.
We see it at the national level with Obama and we see it at the local level, a whole bunch of jerks with guns and badges who could give a shit about the sheeple in the real world. Or perhaps, theirs is the real world.

DeleteBy the way, why do so many Russians appear to have dashboard cameras in their cars? The Guardian explains that, too, by linking to Animal New York:
ReplyDeleteIn Russia, everyone should have a camera on their dashboard. It’s better than keeping a lead pipe under your seat for protection (but you might still want that lead pipe) …
Psychopaths are abundant on Russian roads. You best not cut anyone off or undertake some other type of maneuver that might inconvenience the 200-pound, six-foot-five brawling children you see on YouTube hopping out of their SUVs with their dukes up … These fights happen all the time and you can’t really press charges. Point to your broken nose or smashed windows all you want. The Russian courts don’t like verbal claims. They do, however, like to send people to jail for battery and property destruction if there’s definite video proof …
Dash-cam footage is the only real way to substantiate your claims in the court of law. Forget witnesses. Hit and runs are very common and insurance companies notoriously specialize in denying claims. Two-way insurance coverage is very expensive and almost completely unavailable for vehicles over ten years old–the drivers can only get basic liability.
Ooooooo-kay. Note to self: scratch “road trip in Urals” from bucket list.

ReplyDeleteProfessor Cornel West: Obama Is A ‘War Criminal’ Like Nixon And Bush
by Noah Rothman | 5:27 pm, February 14th, 2013 video » 113 comments
Princeton University Professor Cornel West severely criticized President Barack Obama on Thursday while he co-hosted the Tavis Smiley radio show. West said that Obama’s recently uncovered legal justification for attacks on American citizens in league with Al Qaeda amounted to war crimes. Obama is, like his Republican predecessors Richard Nixon and George W. Bush, a war criminal, West said.
“Your thoughts on this so-called license to kill?” Smiley asked West.
“The chickens are coming home to roost,” West replied. “We’ve been talking about this for a good while, the immorality of drones, dropping bombs on innocent people, it’s been over 200 children so far. These are war crimes.”
“I think we have to be very honest, let us not be deceived — Nixon, Bush, Obama, they’re war criminals,” West continued. “They have killed innocent people in the name of the struggle for freedom, but they’re suspending the law, very much like Wall Street criminals. The law is suspended for them, but the law applies for the rest of us.”
West highlighted a double standard in conclusion by saying that, if he or Smiley were to conduct themselves as Obama has, they would be sent to prison.

I'd be tempted to join the chorus too if I thought it would get Obama out of office and in prison.

DeleteI was swithing channels duing intermission of the hockey game and came across FOX. O'Reilly was out and Juan Williams was grilling a lady from Code Pink who agreed with Cornel West's assessment. The lady was calm, polite, new what she was talking about, cited appropriate examples, and was evidently well travelled throughout the ME.
Jaun ranted and screamed, raised his voice, lost his temper as well as his dignity. The lady made him look like a doofus.
The conservatives are losing it.

Video: In which I get ill with Juan Williams over accusation that I don’t care about victims of gun violence
posted at 12:41 pm on February 15, 2013 by Mary Katharine Ham
I don’t usually post video of myself, but this got a lot of reaction this morning. I imagine my visceral annoyance speaks for a lot of people being accused of not caring about children who die at the hands of murderers just because we happen to disagree with President Obama’s preferred federal remedies for said murders (most of which have already been implemented and failed spectacularly).
Juan and I are friends, and as I say at the end of the clip, we will make it up later. But please notice that I do not impugn Juan’s motives. I would have appreciated the same consideration.

I was unaware that Juan Williams was a conservative. He seems to be always defending Obama.
I have been watching and listening to Dr. Ben Carson on the Hannity show. He is a very impressive guy.
Nothing conservative about Juan.

DeleteEvidently, Jaun was sitting in for O'Reilly and was either told to or felt he needed to come on hard on the subject of defending drone attacks.
You could tell he was uncomfortable at times like when the lady pointed out that the Obama policy was against both international law and the Constitution. He haD to backpeddle a little before resuming the attack.
At any rate he looked pretty silly.
.
He was in the No Spin Zone for the first time ever, and it threw him all out of whack.
Delete.
DeleteLikely, unlike the neocons and hard right conservatives, Williams defense of the drone program was merely a spirited defense of Obama policy no matter where it leads or whatever the end results. At any rate, the lady made him look silly. Or perhaps, it was just the facts that made him look silly. Other than the legal/constitutional issues, the lady's arguments centered on how ineffective the drone raids were in making the US safer.
From the Guardian,
Obama, the US and the Muslim world: the animosity deepens
Another new poll, this one of Pakistan, shows: a central promise of Obama for improving US security is an utter failure
Obama's most devoted supporters have long hailed his supposedly unique ability to improve America's standing in that part of the world...
None of that has happened. In fact, the opposite has taken place: although it seemed impossible to achieve, Obama has presided over an America that, in many respects, is now even more unpopular in the Muslim world than it was under George Bush and Dick Cheney.
That is simply a fact. Poll after poll has proven it. In July, 2011, the Washington Post reported: "The hope that the Arab world had not long ago put in the United States and President Obama has all but evaporated." Citing a poll of numerous Middle East countries that had just been released, the Post explained: "In most countries surveyed, favorable attitudes toward the United States dropped to levels lower than they were during the last year of the Bush administration."
A 2011 Arab American Institute poll found that "US favorable ratings across the Arab world have plummeted. In most countries they are lower than at the end of the Bush Administration, and lower than Iran's favorable ratings." The same year, a poll of public opinion in Egypt - arguably the most strategically important nation in the region and the site of Obama's 2009 Cairo speech - found pervasively unfavorable views of the US at or even below the levels of the Bush years. A 2012 Pew poll of six predominantly Muslim nations found not only similar or worse perceptions of the US as compared to the Bush years, but also documented that China is vastly more popular in that part of the world than the US. In that region, the US and Israel are still considered, by far, to be the two greatest threats to peace...

Outgoing EPA chief Lisa Jackson bid farewell to her administrative duties yesterday, but we’re still trying to figure out the exact nature of her longtime e-mail alias for internal EPA business, one Richard Windsor. Last year, we learned that Jackson had been using this .gov alias to conduct business on behalf of her extremely zealous and costly regulation-happy independent agency, and the Competitive Enterprise Institute is still waiting for the fulfillment of their Freedom of Information Act request and subsequent lawsuit.

Obama government transparency at its finest. If you look closely, you will see that Richard isn't really there at all. An open window is Windsor, not even a window pane.

ReplyDeletePresident Obama didn’t make any phone calls the night of the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, the White House said in a letter to Congress released Thursday. “During the entire attack, the president of the United States never picked up the phone to put the weight of his office in the mix,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican, who had held up Mr. Obama’s defense secretary nominee to force the information to be released. Mr. Graham said that if Mr. Obama had picked up the phone, at least two of the Americans killed in the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi might still be alive because he might have been able to push U.S. aid to get to the scene faster. The White House has said Mr. Obama was kept up to date on the attack by his staff, though after being alerted to the attack in a pre-scheduled afternoon meeting he never spoke again with Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Martin E. Dempsey or then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Obama promised us all during the campaign a full report on Benghazi, saying no one wanted to get to the bottom of it all more than he, and I believed him too. He seems such a nice young man. But, I have to tell you, I am beginning to think the guy is just a liar, and never had any intention of making an investigation into what he didn't do. I simply don't trust the guy.
He used to say he was born in Kenya, but now he says he was born in Hawaii. I don't know where he was born. I am not even sure who his biological father might be. He is a tall dude, and both his claimed parents are quite short. Maybe he had a growth spurt from eating great Indonesian food. I really think he is the greatest fraud ever perpetuated on the people of the United States, and that is saying something. A cop killer, like Dorner, wrote his book for him. I've always thought that odd, too. He said he hardly knew Bill Ayers. I heard him say it on TV.
Just keeping Benghazi alive here, as someone asked me to do.
