Iranian TV reporting says terror in Mali caused by Saudi, Qatar Salafist terror groups and France going in could destabilize Africa and this is by design.

The bloody making of a global jihadi movement

MICHAEL JANSEN IRISH TIMES
ANALYSIS : The Soviet war in Afghanistan was criticial in building the contemporary ‘Jihadi International’
The seizure of scores of hostages in the Algerian desert and the emergence of an expansionist “Islamic state” in neighbouring Mali are the latest developments in the global war being waged by militant Muslims, jihadis, against the secular West and its allies, culture and influence in the Ummah, the worldwide Muslim community.
Algeria and France, the former colonial power in the region, responded differently to these challenges. Determined to bring a quick end to the hostage crisis, the Algerian military slew both jihadis and captives.
France, by contrast, intervened in Mali eight months after jihadi rebels had proclaimed independence in the north and only when they threatened the capital Bamako in the south. This response is likely to spur jihadis everywhere to mount fresh operations in a global campaign.
In Islam, jihad is a just war carried out in self-defence, warfare against persecutors and conquerors, and “war in God’s cause”. The Koran provides the basis for legislation governing warfare in Surah (chapter) II, verse 190: “Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not commit aggression, God loves not the aggressors.”
If aggressors and persecutors desist, verse 193 says hostilities should cease. Jihad-motivated Muslims fought Christian Crusaders in Palestine during the 11th-13th centuries and colonial masters during the 19th and early 20th century freedom struggles.
Commanders of the later campaigns are inspirational figures for contemporary jihadis. Three in particular can be mentioned: Abdel Qader who fought the French in Algeria in the 1830s; the Mahdi who staged the 1881-99 revolt against Anglo-Egyptian rule in the Sudan; and slew British Gen Charles Gordon, and Omar Mukhtar who led the 1911-43 Libyan resistance campaign against the Italians.
Sadiq al-Mahdi, great grandson of the Mahdi, remains a major figure on the Sudanese scene while Awad Mukhtar, the grandson of Omar Mukhtar – who was celebrated in a film starring Anthony Quinn – threw in his lot with the 2011 revolt against Muammar Gadafy.
No borders
Syrian cleric Izzedin al-Qassam (1882-1935) – for whom Hamas’s military wing was named – was another icon of resistance against the French in Syria and the British in Palestine. He, like most contemporary jihadis, believed that Islam inspires Muslims to resist oppression and foreign occupation and that there should be no borders dividing the Ummah.
The critical period for the contemporary jihadi movement was the Saudi-western backed campaign (1979-89) to oust the Soviet army from Afghanistan. Before the iconic figure of this war became Osama bin Laden and the launchpad of jihad became al-Qaeda, many veterans volunteered to defend Muslims in the Balkans or returned to their home countries and formed jihadi organisations.
One of the returnees was Mokhtar Belmokhtar, head of the faction that seized the hostages in Algeria. His post-Afghan war career is typical of self-styled jihadi emirs, or princes.
He joined the country’s Armed Islamic Group during its 1990s revolt against the secular government and in 1998 co-founded the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat, which recruited Algerians and Moroccans and launched attacks on security forces in the Sahel region. This group morphed into al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb; in 2011 it expelled Belmokhtar, who set up his own faction, Those Who Sign in Blood, based in Mali.
This kind of evolution is common among jihadi organisations, particularly those that eventually set up as al-Qaeda franchises. For them the brand is important: al-Qaeda is considered by militants the most successful of the jihadi organisations because it struck a world-shaking blow against the West when its combatants attacked the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington on September 11th, 2001.
Since then jihadi groups have proliferated and evolved into a “Jihadi International,” a loosely connected global jihadi move ment similar to the “Communist International,” the Comintern which, after the communists took power in Russia, created dozens of communist parties the world over with the aim of taking over the world.
While the Jihadi International does not have a sponsor comparable to the Soviet Union, ultra-orthodox Salafi Saudi Arabia has become the movement’s ideological mentor and financier, and Saudi-trained clerics preaching in Saudi-built mosques serve as recruiting agents from Morocco in the West to Indonesia and the Philippines in the east.
Saudi Salafism was launched in the 18th century by preacher Mohamed ibn Abd al-Wahhab, whose puritanical teachings have been adopted and promulgated by the Saudi monarchy. The Salafi ideology did not, however, gain wider acceptance until the latter half of the 19th century, at a time the western challenge to Muslims was overpowering.
Exemplars
Salafis believe the Muslim world fell to foreign occupation because of a loss of faith and the corruption of the Ummah and that to win independence modern-day Muslims must revert to seventh-century exemplars, the revered Companions of the Prophet Muhammad, and try to follow their religious, cultural and social precepts and practices.
While Salafis are not necessarily jihadis, many jihadis are Salafis or claim to be Salafis, although respected Salafi scholars argue that jihadi urban guerrilla warfare and terrorism against civilians is forbidden. Their rulings are ignored both by jihadi commanders and footsoldiers.
Egyptian scholar Sayyid Qutb (1906-66) was a 20th century thinker who also shaped fundamentalist thinking, inculcating a revulsion against secularism and the US, which he considered impious and materialistic. He joined the Muslim Brotherhood, became head of its “enlightenment” effort, and edited its weekly publication. He is regarded highly by al-Qaeda, its franchises and offshoots.
Today there are dozens of jihadi groups, including the Pakistani military intelligence-supported Laskhar-e-Taiba fighting in Indian-administered Kashmir; al-Shebab in Somalia and Kenya; the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan; Chechen, Ingush and Dagistani separatists in the North Caucasus; the Islamic State of Iraq; al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula; Islamic Jihad in Gaza; Boko Haram in Nigeria; and Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria.

A damned if you do damned if you don't situation. Stay out the capital falls, go in the cancer spreads.

The writer of the article must have it all wrong though as he says there is a 'global war being waged by militant Muslims, jihadis, against the secular West and its allies'. And the majority opinion here is that there is no such war, WiO objecting, who says we may not be at war with islam but islam is at war with us.

It is easy to argue 'Fortress Israel'. The country is surrounded by enemies; and while they have maintained a modus vivendi with some countries like Jordon, Turkey, and Egypt, even those ties are currently strained.

The US suffers from the same problem on radical Islam that it suffers on so many other issues. Most people are too worried about making a living, to busy trying to get by to really give a shit. Therefore, the only thing we hear is the bleating of the MSM and the only thing they see is Obama foreign policy as filtered through the lens of the MSM.

Foreign policy is driven by the executive. That's what the Constitution calls for and that's the way it's always been. And while Obama might have a benighted view of the world, most Americans never hear him challenged because they only see his actions through a media filter, a media which exhibits a distinct antipathy towards the predominant religions in this country, a secular media driven by a distinct fear of radical Islam, a media driven by left-wing ideologues who go out of their way to skew their message in support of 'the one'.

However, I disagree America will ever reach the tipping point predicted by WiO. First, I expect the current trend will end with the departure of Obama. Many liberals disagree with a number of his policies and the tactics O uses while engaging in foreign policy; yet they remain silent because he is the only thing they have going for them right now.

Secondly, Americans will only react on those things that they believe will impact on them directly. America's wars are sanitized affairs. No American is really affected except those who volunteer to get involved. However, as evidenced by the brouhaha we have seen on the gun-control debate, when the subject at hand is of importance to Americans they can quickly become energized. IMO if/when America sees a threat to them from radical Islam, they will react.

      .

At least, WiO makes sense in what he is saying about Israel. Although, I suspect the 'Islamization of America' will quickly pass from memory when Obama departs the scene. Although, Libs in general are slow learners.

Bob, in his uniquely simplistic way, merely mistates the argument of many here.

Dearborn, a city of 97,000 surrounded on three sides by Detroit

Actually, the Muslims, Caldeans, and other ethic groups that have chosen Dearborn to live in could have probably found a safer place to settle in. It's not unusual to see stories on the evening news about the Arab gas station employees or store owners that are being robbed or killed there. And in most cases, it's not Arabs doing the robbing and killing.

The biggest changes I see in Dearborn are the number of restaurants that now have felafal on the menu.

Now I will admit that the time that fundamentalist preacher from Florida camped out in front of the Dearborn city hall, there was a pretty big dust up. Before police broke it up, there were a lot of shoes flying through the air.

Shoes also flew when wig jobs from the Tea Party decided to disrupt The International Arab Festival in Dearborn in 2011. (One wonders what would happen if a bunch of Muslim crazies decided to disrupt a Saint Paddy's Day parade.) In this case, the Dearborn Police tried to stop the Tea Partiers from handing out leaflets and disrupting the festival. When their actions went to trial, the actions of the police were ruled unconstitutional by the 6th Court of Appeals on 1st Amendment grounds. So much for Sharia taking over.

By contrast, Iran’s military leaders boasted about their support for Hamas, offering no indication that they wanted the fighting to end.

Less than two years after Egypt’s revolution, Morsi’s government is struggling to address domestic challenges, including the proliferation of armed radical groups in Sinai. But, as regional tensions continue to rise, the chances of an Egypt-Iran détente are likely to deteriorate.

The remarks have brought an angry reaction from Palestinians, who say they come in the context of rising attacks by Jewish extremists on mosques and churches in the West Bank.

“It unfortunately shows a reality of the Israeli electoral campaign where some parties have campaigned promising more occupation, more discrimination and particularly in the case of Jewish Home, promising an apartheid regime for Palestine,” said Xavier Abu Eid, an adviser to the negotiations department of the Palestine Liberation Organisation.

RABAT, Morocco — The Islamists are back as a force in Algeria.

The terrorist attack on an Algerian natural gas plant that left dozens of hostages and militants dead has demonstrated how a failing Algerian insurgency transformed itself into a regional threat, partly by exploiting the turmoil unleashed by the Arab Spring revolts.

Al-Qaida's branch in Algeria retreated into a Sahara no man's land between Mali, Algeria and Mauritania after it was largely defeated by the Algerian army in a 10-year war in the 1990s that claimed 200,000 lives. There it grew rich on smuggling and hostage-taking, gained new recruits and re-emerged stronger than ever, armed with looted high-tech weapons from Libya's 2011 civil war.

They say "What began in January 2012 as a secular revolt of disaffected Tuaregs hoping to carve out a homeland in northern Mali was soon hijacked by al-Qaida and allied extremist groups."

    ...

But beneath their extensive repackaging, Habayit Hayehudi is still nothing more than a settler right-wing party that has no room for the secular, the non-Jewish, or those whose reading of “Jewish values” differ from their own. It doesn’t take too much paranoia to detect a sinister edge to Habayit Hayehudi’s incessant calls for the Jewish nature of Israel to be “strengthened.”

A person familiar with the inauguration tells The Associated Press that the pop star will perform at Tuesday's ball for President Barack Obama's staffers. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because that person wasn't authorized to publicly reveal the information.

The staff ball is typically a private affair. During the last inauguration festivities, Jay-Z reportedly performed for that event.

According to one attendee, Jay-Z rapped a riff on one of his hit songs, "99 Problems but George Bush Ain't One," to the delight of the throngs of young staffers who worked to elect Obama in 2008.

With TWA Flight 800, for instance, all initial reporting pointed to a missile strike as the cause of the highly visible explosion that killed 230 people off the coast of Long Island in July 1996. In the weeks that followed, without any new evidence, the Clinton Justice Department ignored the 270 FBI eyewitnesses to a missile strike and shifted the storyline from a missile to a bomb.

Bottom line: if the Democrat-media complex can turn an obvious missile strike into a mechanical failure and lose John Doe #2 to history, turning four handguns into an assault weapon and making a second shooter disappear is small beer.

John Doe #2 refers to this dude:

The media, however, quickly lost interest in the swarthy John Doe No. 2. The likely reason is that If he proved to be an Islamic radical, it would be harder to blame the "Republican Revolution" for the bombing. At McVeigh's trial, the Justice Department did not put a single one of the many reliable eyewitnesses on the stand because every one of them saw McVeigh with his foreign-looking accomplice. Again, the media chose not to notice the discrepancy. As Clinton himself acknowledged, Oklahoma City-i.e. the reporting on Oklahoma City -- saved his presidency.

Isn't American Thinker great? Why, yes it is.

They are not always jumping to conclusions uncritically like Ash, who hadn't heard about some of these concerns until he read them right here.

    1. So we know a lot of people got shot, but some of the details remain sketchy. Which doesn't imply a conspiracy, or a coverup. Just the need for more professional reporting, at least.

Which of course didn't stop the critical thinkers Rat, Ash and Krugman from embracing the idea.

    Silver lining of coin found!

It is a hope of mine that one day thousands of years in the future when our nation is long gone, there will be some consequential relic left behind to guide future archaeologists when they try to piece together the fall of the American empire; that, among our ruins, they will find a historical object that announces: America disappeared from the face of the Earth as the result of a leader named Barack Obama.

Up until recently, I never really believed such a thing could ever happen -- and then I heard talk of a Barack Obama trillion dollar platinum coin.

Article a little out of date but what the hell we have been talking critical thinking here.

  27. Alex Pelosi's Sundance debut has political angle

"I'm drawn to broken men - Why is that?" Pelosi pondered at a brunch Friday morning to celebrate the documentary. "I don't know. I'm really drawn to the recovering politician. . there's a lot of that in the film."

McGreevey was the governor of New Jersey and considered a rising Democratic star when he resigned in 2004 after it was revealed that McGreevey, then married with a child, was cheating on his wife with another man.

The scandal became a tabloid sensation, but after that, McGreevey came out as a gay man, trained in the seminary and started working with incarcerated women. The film follows McGreevey as he helps the women in prison and in their attempts to make the transition after their release.

"He's taken his own shame and turned it into something good, which most of the other fallen men don't do," she said, adding that a return to politics was unlikely for him: "He's too sincere."

McGreevey, who was also at the brunch with partner Mark O'Donnell, said he was initially reluctant to do a documentary about his life.

"I think my personal story had been told time and time again, but when Alexandra said she was willing to follow the women and get to know the women . it became something different," he said.

Pelosi spent so much time with McGreevey that her young children make cameo appearances in the film, and spent major holidays with McGreevey as he visited women in prison.

Nancy Pelosi recalled calling her daughter on Christmas to find out what the filmmaker's kids got for Christmas.

"She said, `Mom I'm not going to tell you where I am right now,' and I said, `Well, I think you are because you brought it up,'" the House Democratic minority leader recalled.

She was in prison with McGreevey: the younger Pelosi recalls her mother didn't take the news well, chastising her for not being home with her children, now 5 and 6.

"I thought, `There's something more important than me and my kids,' and that's something I learned from Jim McGreevey," Pelosi said.

American Thinker, all one needs to see, the Rev. Bob's bible. Bob's next road trip? Meeting up with Rev. Terry Jones to attend Rev. Phelps' annual Westboro Baptist Church Fish Fry and Ho-Down in Topeka.

The Rev. Bob, once again falls for the logical fallacy that assumes that since there are a lot of articles saying the same thing then they must be true or at least that they have some miniscule amount of value. Normally, I wouldn't bother to read anything from the American Thinker; however, since he specifically referenced this one, I checked it out.

Detroit: America's First Sharia-Compliant Muslim Enclave? isn't bad either.

After scanning the article, I could only come to one of two conclusions:

      1. Like some blackbird attracted to a shiny object, the Rev. Bob doesn't bother reading the articles he posts but is merely attracted to the shiny headlines that seem to agree with his skewed outlook on most things political and merely gathers them up and takes them home to his nest.

      or

Since the actually title, if you follow the link to this article that Rev. Bob thinks "isn't bad", is The ADL Must Be Stopped and is more of an attack on the ADL than on Muslims, we can only assume that the Rev. Bob, Israel's friend in Idaho, believes the Anti-Defamation League just isn't radical enough.

The same nonsense spouted by Teapot Head, Sharon Angle, in Nevada though she hadn't been anywhere near the Dearborn she was talking about, another talking bonehead and one of the main reasons Harry Reid is still leading the Senate.
