COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

To the tally of my soul,
Loud and strong kept up the gray-brown bird,
With pure deliberate notes spreading filling the night.

Loud in the pines and cedars dim,
Clear in the freshness moist and the swamp-perfume,
And I with my comrades there in the night.

While my sight that was bound in my eyes unclosed,
As to long panoramas of visions.

And I saw askant the armies,
I saw as in noiseless dreams hundreds of battle-flags,
Borne through the smoke of the battles and pierc’d with missiles I saw them,
And carried hither and yon through the smoke, and torn and bloody,
And at last but a few shreds left on the staffs, (and all in silence,)
And the staffs all splinter’d and broken.

I saw battle-corpses, myriads of them,
And the white skeletons of young men, I saw them,
I saw the debris and debris of all the slain soldiers of the war,
But I saw they were not as was thought,
They themselves were fully at rest, they suffer’d not,
The living remain’d and suffer’d, the mother
    suffer’d,
And the wife and the child and the musing comrade suffer’d,
And the armies that remain’d suffer’d.

Now while I sat in the day and look’d forth,
In the close of the day with its light and the fields of spring, and the farmers preparing their crops,
In the large unconscious scenery of my land with its lakes and forests,
In the heavenly aerial beauty, (after the perturb’d winds and the storms,)
Under the arching heavens of the afternoon swift passing, and the voices of children and women,
The many-moving sea-tides, and I saw the ships how they sail’d,
And the summer approaching with richness, and the fields all busy with labor,
And the infinite separate houses, how they all went on, each with its meals and minutia of daily usages,
And the streets how their throbbings throbb’d, and the cities pent—lo, then and there,
Falling upon them all and among them all, enveloping me with the rest,
Appear’d the cloud, appear’d the long black trail,
And I knew death, its thought, and the sacred knowledge of death.

Then with the knowledge of death as walking one side of me,
And the thought of death close-walking the other side of me,
And I in the middle as with companions, and as holding the hands of companions,
I fled forth to the hiding receiving night that talks not,
Down to the shores of the water, the path by the swamp in the dimness,
To the solemn shadowy cedars and ghostly pines so still.

And the singer so shy to the rest receiv’d me,
The gray-brown bird I know receiv’d us comrades three,
And he sang the carol of death, and a verse for him I love.

      From deep secluded recesses,
From the fragrant cedars and the ghostly pines so still,
Came the carol of the bird.

And the charm of the carol rapt me,
As I held as if by their hands my comrades in the night,
And the voice of my spirit tallied the song of the bird.

      Come lovely and soothing death,
Undulate round the world, serenely arriving, arriving,
In the day, in the night, to all, to each,
      Sooner or later delicate death.

      Prais’d be the fathomless universe,
For life and joy, and for objects and knowledge curious,
And for love, sweet love—but praise! praise! praise!
For the sure-enwinding arms of cool-enfolding death.

Dark mother always gliding near with soft feet,
Have none chanted for thee a chant of fullest welcome?
Then I chant it for thee, I glorify thee above all,
I bring thee a song that when thou must indeed come, come unfalteringly.

      Approach strong deliveress,
When it is so, when thou hast taken them I joyously sing the dead,
Lost in the loving floating ocean of thee,
Laved in the flood of thy bliss O death.

From me to thee glad serenades,
Dances for thee I propose saluting thee, adornments and feastings for thee,
And the sights of the open landscape and the high-spread sky are fitting,
And life and the fields, and the huge and thoughtful night.

The night in silence under many a star,
The ocean shore and the husky whispering wave whose voice I know,
And the soul turning to thee O vast and well-veil’d death,
And the body gratefully nestling close to thee.

Over the tree-tops I float thee a song,
Over the rising and sinking waves, over the myriad fields and the prairies wide,
Over the dense-pack’d cities all and the teeming wharves and ways,
I float this carol with joy, with joy to thee O death.

For God's sake, is there nothing that will shut up the chatter? Is there no tragedy so great, so profoundly disturbing we cannot note it with silence born of grief to deep to express?

A David Brooks study was cited in the previous thread which claims that the number of incidents spiked in 1980, again in 1990, and again in the 2000's, suggesting that the problem is accelerating. I haven't reviewed his study, or any others on the subject, but I see nothing about per capita normalization of the incidents, which would bend the spikes downward.

My personal thesis being there is no "explanation," or at least no single explanation, that might suggest predictive commonalities. There is no singular predictive profile.(*) I would go so far as to say it is nearly random behavior, or more precisely, the set of externalities, coupled with the matrix of individual mental, emotional and psychological characteristics is infinite. And there is nothing personal about random behavior - it is little more than an eruption of "absolute indifference", a reminder that both appalls and sharpens the focus of the caring person.

Which brings me to my conclusion: one can't guard against the random explosions of human behavior. It is impossible. The Serenity and Equilibrium movies, and a host of others have explored this theme ad nauseum.

(*) I don't know if sibling jealousy was offered as a serious proposal, but that is absurd. If there anything more dangerous in this world than a trader with an inside tip or a preacher with a microphone, it's a kiddie shrink with a theory.

    10. I agree we can't guard effectively against the random explosion of human behavior but we can help mitigate the explosions effects by limiting the power of weapons available and weapons availability in general.

There is little reason to expect that effective gun control would stop rampages done by those working hard to kill many it certainly can lessen the more minor human explosions from becoming homicide. This particular kid seems to have had access to the weapons because his mother was a gun enthusiast. If she didn't have them around he may have tried to do his assault with a knife.

But it isn't these highly publicized mass murders that gun control can help prevent but rather the numerous minor disputes that escalate. Rufus's statistic of who actually is killed by guns is a telling one. That and the gang-bangers running about popping each other off and innocent bystanders getting killed in the cross fire. Kids shooting 22's at rabbits in the country is very different than kids in ghetto strutting about menacing those that diss them.

Rat, there is a world of difference between smoking a joint and shooting a person. Most who kill don't go out intending to kill. Sure some do but the majority of killing is done through escalating disputes. In other words First Degree Murder is not the norm.

You speak of gun control as if it were simply a legislature passing a law that can be followed or not. This is simply not the case. While I have never spent much time thinking of various ways one can control guns there are many more options then simply passing a law saying "thall shalt not have a gun". You can restrict the manufacture and sale of various weapons. Sure an illicit manufacture of weapons may rise but it is no small task to create automatic weapons. You can also create unique identifiers to gun barrels and bullets which enable the easier linking after the fact of gun incidents.

Can there be effective gun control in the US? Only with a Constitutional amendment, it appears, but stating that there are too many weapons already in the marketplace is a cop-out. The numbers can be reduced but you guys are going the other way. Heck, I just read that Michigan is now allowing conceal carry in churches and a bunch of other places. Florida is about to issue its 1 millionth conceal carry permit. Why the fuck require a permit anyway given your 'bad guys drive the game' meme?

Deuce (and Pat Buchanan) and many others moan on and on about the decline of American culture (not enough white guys with subservient wives) but allowing, MAKING IT A RIGHT, for any stoopid black, muslim, cracker farmer, or any god damn American to have at their finger tips lethal force that can be used at a distance(killing someone with a knife is up close and personal) is just ludicrous. Allowing deranged kids access to weapons that can kill 10's if not 100's in a matter of minutes as a RIGHT is even further to the dark side of ludicrous.

American culture - it isn't the wild west anymore.

I came to the conclusion the NRA was nuts a long time ago. I became even more convinced we are going too far in some states after reading the Florida law during the Zimmerman case. There are laws that should be tightened up or changed like the gun-show exception.

That being said, Ash, only practical solutions need apply.

There are 300 million guns in the US.

SCOTUS has ruled that it's legal for the average citizen to own guns.

As you noted above, it would take a constitutional amendment to get rid of them. What do you think are the chances? If Congress changed the law, what do you think would be its chances of being ruled constitutional given past precedent?

If you want to offer up suggestions keep it to the practical and realize that, as DRR pointed out, only the total elimination of guns will prevent incidences like this one when some nut job goes round the bend, and then only if he doesn't get his hands on or manufacture some explosive device or other WMD. There is always a way to kill people if you are determined.

He failed to push for renewal of the ban on assault weapons. Yet, now he sheds a tear over these killings and will be mourner in chief at the memorial service. There are kids abused every day. Every day five of them are killed because of that abuse. Where is your anger about that? Liberal hypocrites all. There are one and a quarter million abortions in the US each year. This is the likely summary of any report that comes out od the Obama administration regarding Benghazi:

What actually happened in Egypt and Libya on September 11, 2012? The story from the U.S. government has changed many times in an effort to craft a narrative that causes as little damage as possible to the Obama administration. Now the administration seems to have settled on something approaching a final version.

    It goes like this:

On September 11, and in the days that followed, citizens in countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa gathered to protest The Innocence of Muslims, a video on YouTube produced in California that was disrespectful to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. Protests that began peacefully outside the U.S. embassy in Cairo and elsewhere grew more violent as extremists decided to take advantage of the unrest. If the violence wasn’t justified, the demonstrations were understandable, given the deeply offensive content of the video. During his speech before the United Nations General Assembly on September 25, for example, President Obama argued that the video “must be rejected by all who respect our common humanity.” And while the attacks in Benghazi, Libya, did not grow out of street demonstrations there, as initial reports had suggested, they did come in response to the protests in Cairo, which were sparked by the offensive film.

White House press secretary Jay Carney summarized this version of events during a November 27 briefing. “There was no protest outside the Benghazi facility,” he conceded. “To this day,” he continued, “it is the assessment of this administration and of our intelligence community and certainly the assessment of your colleagues and the press who have interviewed participants on the ground in the assault on our facilities in Benghazi that they acted at least in part in response to what they saw happening in Cairo and took advantage of that situation.”

Carney elaborated (emphasis added): “They saw what was the breach of our embassy in Cairo and decided to act in Benghazi. And as you know, the breach of our embassy in Cairo was directly in response to the video and was started as a protest outside of our embassy in Cairo.”

The Obama administration’s bottom line: The conflagrations across the Middle East, North Africa, and elsewhere can be traced back to an offensive video. In this telling, there is an almost civic quality to the protests—the demonstrators were concerned Muslims out to defend their religion from the unjustifiable bigotry of a misguided filmmaker (who is now in prison for parole violations)...

    What Happened in Benghazi

    1. So the bad boys in Benghazi just happened to attack the US facility in Benghazi while the Ambassador was there? Happenstance.

There was no intelligence leak, by the Turks or others as to his presence at the Benghazi facility.
      Convenient.

Notice that the Benghazi compound is now referred to as a "facility" by the White House, not a consulate.

And the fact that it was the anniversary of 9/11, that threats and warnings had been coming in for weeks, that there had been a number of attacks in the area recently, that the Brits had been mostly pulled out because their consulate there had been attacked, that the Libyan government said it was a pre-meditated attack by al-Queda affiliates and was not a spontaneous uprising resulting from events in Cairo or the video?

Irrelevant. Per the administration, it was all about the Muslims righteous anger over the video.

That's our story and we are sticking to it.

I hope they are just blowing smoke. Bad enough but it would be disheartening to think the administration and, more importantly, the intelligence community actually believed this bull.

    3. While I'd bet an Amero to a dough-nut that the Ambassador WAS the target of the attack. That the terrorist element that attacked the US facility KNEW he was there. That it was not a matter of happenstance.

    4. We will know for sure when Barky completes his investigation. He is going to report back to us. No one wants the truth to come out more than Barky. He told us so. Just don't get impatient. Hillary would testify, but she has a tummy ache, and feinted dead, dead away. But, didn't got to the hospital. She can't testify while she has her tummy ache. The tummy ache is likely to last until Inauguration Day, at least. She will be a private citizen then.

And the answer is that the intelligence services have cracked the whip and convinced successive governments not only that their agents and their techniques would be compromised if they were required to testify in court, but that their prized intelligence-sharing with the United States could be jeopardised. Given that no testimony means no case, the Government claims it has no alternative but to pay up. The rendition cases, like that of the Saadi family and another Libyan case – that of Abdulhakim Belhaj, which is still outstanding – are also the reason why ministers are trying to pass legislation that would allow courts to hear intelligence evidence in closed session. It is a move that is being fiercely and rightly resisted – justice, after all, has not just to be done, but to be seen to be done – not only by rights organisations but also in the House of Lords, where a series of votes this week may end up forcing a government retreat...

Majority of Governors Refuse to Set-up Healthcare Exchanges.

Pennsylvania seriously considered running its own exchange, but Gov. Tom Corbett said on Wednesday that he would not pursue the idea.

“State authority to run a health insurance exchange is illusory,” Mr. Corbett said. “In reality, Pennsylvania would end up shouldering all of the costs by 2015, but have no authority to govern the program.”

In Tennessee, state officials did a huge amount of planning for a state-run exchange. But Gov. Bill Haslam announced this week that he had decided against the idea because the Obama administration had failed to answer numerous operational questions.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey cited similar concerns in vetoing legislation to establish a state-based exchange last week.

“New guidance continues to trickle out of Washington at an erratic pace,” Mr. Christie said.

Hence the decay of so many “medical” appointments into robot-voiced box-checking. At the doctor’s a couple of months back, the nurse was out to lunch, and so the receptionist-practitioner rattled through the form. In the waiting room. “Are you sexually active?” she asked. “You first,” I replied. I hope I didn’t cost her the federal bonus.

As I wrote a couple weeks ago, Obamacare governmentalizes one-sixth of the U.S. economy — or the equivalent of the entire French economy. No one has ever attempted that before, not even the French. In parts of rural America it will quickly achieve a Platonic perfection: There will be untold legions of regulators, administrators, and IRS collection agents, but not a doctor or nurse in sight.

Yup, it's all about killing off the Republicans.

  20. Before Connecticut tragedy, administration eliminated emergency preparedness program, let school violence prevention programs lapse

Beneath the expressions of grief, sorrow and disbelief over the Connecticut school massacre lies an uneasy truth in Washington: over the last few years the Obama administration and Congress quietly let federal funding for several key school security programs lapse in the name of budget savings.

Government officials told the Washington Guardian on Friday night that two Justice Department programs that had provided more than $200 million to schools for training, security equipment and police resources over the last decade weren't renewed in 2011 and 2012, and that a separate program that provided $800 million to put police officers inside the schools was ended a few years earlier.

Meanwhile, the administration eliminated funding in 2011-12 for a separate Education Department program that gave money to schools to prepare for mass tragedies, the officials said.
