Why should taxpayers subsidize waterfront properties with taxpayer funded insurance?

LONG BEACH TOWNSHIP, N.J. -

Some environmentalists say New Jersey should consider not rebuilding everything lost to Superstorm Sandy.

U.S. Geological Survey scientist Jeffress Willliams says that rising sea levels and changing weather patterns make it likely that the coast will be hit by more frequent destructive storms.

He and other shoreline advocates say officials should consider restricting development to reduce the harm storms can do. They suggest relocating homes and businesses farther from the ocean, building more seawalls and keeping sand dunes high.

Gov. Chris Christie says the shore is too important not to rebuild. But he leaves the decision whether to build again to individual property owners.

If they are individual owners, then let them contract for non-subsidized insurance, based on the actual risk and at their cost.

Yeah, I found it amazing that the default position of FEMA is to provide money to homes and businesses flooded out by hurricanes and such. It takes the Coastal Resources Act to over-ride that default position by trying to set aside some areas from the long arm of the (subsidized, heavily subsidized) developers. Lunacy, but hey, what else would one expect from a political system dependent upon pork. Pork for individuals and pork businesses. Pork for all!

This isn't to say the FEMA should be broken down to State and private parties, but, heck, end the subsidises folks.

Romney gathering canned goods for the folks in New Jersey - laughable!

  3. Price gouging is a common occurrence during emergency situations. Retailers know that consumers who need products will be willing to pay more for them, and they take advantage.

On October 29, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman issued an open letter to vendors reminding them that it is illegal to gouge prices during abnormal disruption of markets.

    ............

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie sent out similar warnings. In New Jersey it is illegal to raise prices by more than 10% during an emergency.

Despite these warnings, price gouging continues.

  4. Christ almighty, how much is enough?

It's a common complaint to say that there is too much money in politics, but as both presidential campaigns come into the final few days of the election season, we seem to have reached the point where there is now, actually, too much money in politics than even politics knows what to do with. And so now, the campaigns are essentially unloading campaign cash as if they've reached the climactic part in the plot arc of "Brewster's Millions."

Most of the rush to unload cash on hand is being paced by Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney's campaign, which is now pumping all sorts of money into states that he is not likely to win, like Minnesota and Pennsylvania. There is some utility to the strategy -- money spent on ads in certain geographic areas of those states allow some bleed into the crucial state of Ohio, where there are probably no television ad spaces left to buy, unless the campaign wants to establish it's own pop-up television channel to tell lies about the auto bailout for the last few days. Additionally, the Romney campaign's decision to spend money in an illusory effort to "expand the map" in an investment of keeping its bluffer's strategy alive.

All this in a "no new taxes - over my dead body - pry it from my cold dead hands" environment?

I tend to agree, the city of New Orleans being the poster child for this. When the entire city is built next to the sea but most of it is also under sea level, you have to ask why would I rebuild there after I lose everything in a hurricane?

I used to live on a flood plain until I didn't. In a previous house, after buying it, I learned it was on a flood plain and required federal flood insurance if I wanted any other kind of homeowners insurance. This was rather galling since I was miles away from the closest river which itself was no Mississippi. Admittedly, I could be complaining in ignorance. Because of the concrete being poured in the fast growing city, there were numerous retention basins scattered around to contain overrun during storms.

I would have probably just grumbled rather than being pissed, except that after being on the flood plain for about eight years, a new government survey by the Corps of Engineers came through and magically I was no longer on a flood plane.

The Great Lakes were formed by glaciers during the ice age. The 'scientists' tell us the earth is still decompressing from the great weight of that ice. Perhaps that explains it.

Of course, there are political and commercial aspects and opportunities to every crisis. Themes such as fairness, history, race, class, greed all play a part in it. As noted yesterday by Rufus, Sandy will probably help Obama some due to the what the media says was a good response on the part of the government at all levels. As I pointed out, the rebuilding will also result in new jobs (at least temporary jobs). In a couple days Sandy created more jobs than Obama did in four years.

When you are running for president, it does pay to have God on your side.

    1. Here is the difference between Obama and Romney.

      Obama thinks he is God.

Romney knows he is not, yet. But strives to become one.

    2. From a real estate agent:

"There are different flood zones though out the area. If you are in a flood zone but outside of the CBRA then your flood can be as little as $428 a year if you buy a property for $185,000. "

If you are in the CBRA (Coastal Barrier Resource Act) area then, if you can find insurance at all, you are looking at about 10k a year for 185k property.

    Friend --

We got outraised pretty badly in the first half of this past month by Mitt Romney and the Republicans, giving them a $45 million edge on us.

We don't know what kind of impact it will have in the final days of a tight race, but we still have time to fight back and make sure it will not be a decisive factor in this election.

Right now, I need you to make a donation of $5 or more to close the gap and finish strong.

I know I've asked a lot of you.

No matter how this ends, on Election Night I'll get up on stage and thank you for all the time and effort and hard-earned dollars you've put into this. But I also want to be able to tell our country that our hard work paid off, and that we will continue moving forward for four more years.

Please donate $5 or more today:

I personally, based on the justification provided from Scalia et al, think that Citizens United was as much a matter of judicial activism as Roe v. Wade. The amounts of money being spent are ridiculous.

However, at this point in time, it is events that will change minds not TV ads. I view the ads as a massive waste of money. That being said, as a progressive you should applaud it. Look at the billions of dollars being pumped into the economy.

We are less than a week from the election.

At this point, I just want it over. I want my life back. I’m worn out. I am struggling to still care now that I have cast my absentee ballot.

I think most Americans feel that way. The people of Ohio and Florida are begging for a return to TV ads for male enhancement drugs and self-lubricating catheters.

Modern biology shows an evolutionary transition from matter to mind that does not seem random or accidental but rather built into the script of nature. The natural teleology from nonliving matter to living things to contemplative minds is a vital clue that as nature progresses from the material to the immaterial, and from the perishable to the imperishable, so too may we. Like nature itself, we may be in a natural transition from living beings made up of matter to minds that are not subject to the limitations of matter.
