The more things change, the more things remain the same in Egypt?

Egypt judges condemn 'unprecedent attack' by Mursi
BBC

Egypt's top judges have accused President Mohammed Mursi of staging an "unprecedented attack" on the judiciary.
The president passed a decree earlier this week granting himself extensive new powers.
It includes a bar on any court dissolving the constituent assembly, which is drawing up a new constitution.
Thursday's decree sparked angry demonstrations, and attacks on offices of Mr Mursi's Islamist FJP party.
The president has said he is acting to protect the revolution.
In a statement, the Supreme Judicial Council called his move "an unprecedented attack on the independence of the judiciary and its rulings," and called on him to reverse it.
The BBC's Jon Leyne in Cairo says this was a tough, if fairly predictable, statement and that the judges are considering going on strike.
There had been reports that the council was about to disband the constituent assembly for a second time, our correspondent adds, which could seriously derail the transition to democracy and further delay new parliamentary elections.
This, in turn, could deter Egypt's political leaders from taking tough decisions while they wait for the vote, he adds.
Fresh protests
Mr Mursi also sacked his prosecutor general on Thursday and gave himself the sole power to appoint a new one.
Our correspondent says that element is likely to be popular, as although Mubarak is serving a long jail term for ordering the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising, many officials were acquitted, creating deep resentments.
The ruling also bans any challenging of the president's decisions and laws.
Both critics and supporters of Mr Mursi have staged rallies since the decree. Overnight, crowds gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square, vowing to stage a sit-in.
A large opposition rally is also planned for Tuesday.
The US said earlier that Mr Mursi's move had raised concerns in the international community.

  1. The Moslem Brotherhood are Islamic Nazis.

The Obama administration has a policy of supporting the takeover of arab/islamic nations by the Moslem Brotherhood. The Obama Administration has an open door policy of meeting and supporting official US contact with the Moslem Brotherhood, INCLUDING Sec of State Hillary Clinton's #1, a person with actual work history and memberships in Islamist groups.

Make no mistake, the MB and it's islamists groups are enemies of the USA.

However this current administration is hand and glove with promoting known enemies of the USA (and it's constitution).

  2. And now, because of the dog and pony show that just went down in Gaza the Moslem Brotherhood (which runs egypt) pushed Hamas to strike at Israel, allowing months and months of unfettered smuggling of long range Iranian rockets, mortars and supplies to be smuggled thru the Sinai.

Thus creating the situation they now are praised for "solving".

And thus are being rewarded by the USA with billions in aid and opening the door for 14 billion more in loans and grants from the IMF and the Saudis.

    So how's that show working?

  5. Condi Rice says we ought to support the Syrian rebels -

In recent days, France, Britain and Turkey have stepped into the diplomatic vacuum to recognize a newly formed opposition that is broadly representative of all Syrians. The United States should follow their lead and then vet and arm the unified group with defensive weapons on the condition that it pursues an inclusive post-Assad framework. The United States and its allies should also consider establishing a no-fly zone to protect the innocent. America’s weight and influence are needed. Leaving this to regional powers, whose interests are not identical to ours, will only exacerbate the deepening sectarianism....

But the breakdown of the Middle East state system is a graver risk. Iran will win, our allies will lose, and for decades the region’s misery and violence will make today’s chaos look tame.

War is not receding in the Middle East. It is building to a crescendo. Our elections are over. Now, America must act.

      Neocons?

Obama was initially reluctant to jump into Libya. Gates, Donilon, and Brennen were all opposed to intervention. However, the bad news troika of Clinton, Rice, and Samantha Powers pushed for it and convinced Obama.

    What and who are they...

The secularists that were part of the rebels were refused meetings with Obama, all the while the Islamists which in the beginning of the conflict were the minority are now the group getting the heavy weapons.

The "rebels" are not a homogenous group. However Obama's policy of supporting the most extreme and dangerous group (moslem brotherhood) now makes it assured that if and when assad is overthrown syria will go islamists.

Video: Protests continue in Cairo over Morsi power grab
posted at 11:31 am on November 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Protests continued in Cairo a second day, with thousands of Egyptians filling the streets in reaction to Mohamed Morsi’s assertion of “temporary” dictatorial powers. Morsi attempted to explain that the decrees that removed legislative and judicial oversight over his actions were aimed at the “weevils” of the Mubarak regime, an odd declaration as Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood had already succeeded in driving them out of at least the legislature. CBS News reports that Egyptians feel “betrayed” as Morsi’s reforms have turned into something that looks a lot like another Nasser/Sadat/Mubarak regime in the making:

    CBS’ analyst questions the timing:

“What position has the US been put in?” “The same position as it has for decades in the Midde East.” Yes, which is just another way of saying, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss,” with the exception that this boss is a lot less friendly to US actions while still leaving the US on the hook for supporting him. Smart power.

  13. The Covenant of the Islamic Resistance Movement

Peaceful Solutions, Initiatives and International Conferences:

    Article Thirteen:

Initiatives, and so-called peaceful solutions and international conferences, are in contradiction to the principles of the Islamic Resistance Movement. Abusing any part of Palestine is abuse directed against part of religion. Nationalism of the Islamic Resistance Movement is part of its religion. Its members have been fed on that. For the sake of hoisting the banner of Allah over their homeland they fight. "Allah will be prominent, but most people do not know."

Now and then the call goes out for the convening of an international conference to look for ways of solving the (Palestinian) question. Some accept, others reject the idea, for this or other reason, with one stipulation or more for consent to convening the conference and participating in it. Knowing the parties constituting the conference, their past and present attitudes towards Moslem problems, the Islamic Resistance Movement does not consider these conferences capable of realising the demands, restoring the rights or doing justice to the oppressed. These conferences are only ways of setting the infidels in the land of the Moslems as arbitraters. When did the infidels do justice to the believers?

"But the Jews will not be pleased with thee, neither the Christians, until thou follow their religion; say, The direction of Allah is the true direction. And verily if thou follow their desires, after the knowledge which hath been given thee, thou shalt find no patron or protector against Allah." (The Cow - verse 120).
There is no solution for the Palestinian question except through Jihad. Initiatives, proposals and international conferences are all a waste of time and vain endeavors. The Palestinian people know better than to consent to having their future, rights and fate toyed with. As in said in the honourable Hadith:

"The people of Syria are Allah's lash in His land. He wreaks His vengeance through them against whomsoever He wishes among His slaves It is unthinkable that those who are double-faced among them should prosper over the faithful. They will certainly die out of grief and desperation."

    Published: 11.24.12, 10:37 / Israel News

The Egyptian army is beginning to intervene in the public protest against the far-reaching powers President Mohammed Morsi has granted himself, the London-based Arabic newspaper Al-Quds Al-Arabi reported.

According to the report, the "Officers of the Egyptian Army" organization distributed leaflets during Friday's demonstrations saying the protests were "legitimate. However, the army has yet to respond officially to Morsi's decree, which exempts all his decisions from legal challenge until a new parliament was elected. (Roi Kais)

  16. Testimony from a guy who has been there -

    November 24, 2012
    Speaking Truth to Hamas
    Andrew G. Bostom

The remarkably courageous Ramallah-born Mosab Hassan Yousef, the eldest son of Hamas cofounder Sheikh Hassan Yousef and a former Hamas activist himself, served time on several occasions in Israeli prison. Yousef is also known as "the Green Prince," the code name assigned him by the Shin Bet (Israeli security agency), with whom he later collaborated for a decade to thwart numerous terrorist attacks during the second intifada, sparing hundreds of Israeli lives.

Now living in the U.S., two years ago Yousef published Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue and Unthinkable Choices. The book elaborated his rejection of Hamas' inherent jihadist violence, his personal forsaking of Islam and conversion to Christianity, and his decision to assist Israel clandestinely for approximately a decade starting in 1996.

In the aftermath of Israel's eight-day Operation Pillar of Defense response to Hamas' latest rocket jihad, brought to a temporary hiatus via a cease-fire, Mosab Hassan Yousef opined about Israel's actions, the contrasting behaviors of the Hamas regime, and why the latter should be dismantled:

Israel helps the Palestinian people more than anyone else: every day it provides electricity and even the salaries paid to employees come from banks in Israel. There is also humanitarian aid that enters Gaza.

I want to say to the members of the organization, including my father, who are listening to this interview -- brave people do not hide behind children and fire missiles. If they had even a bit of courage -- they would be able to leave Gaza instead of hiding like rats.

I have trouble believing that Hamas will be able to one day build a modern state. I hope their lies will be exposed to the Palestinian public."

This [the dismantling of the Hamas regime] is necessary, but we have to work very hard for it. This is necessary not only for Israel -- but for the benefit of humanity. Hamas was born to destroy. It cannot build.

    1. Before you get too much more wound up on the subject, you need to understand that the United Nations pays for the electricity that Israel sends to Hamas. Also, the money that's transferred through Israeli banks is also U.N./U.S. money.

  17. The Legal Forum for the Land of Israel has demanded that Israel stop transferring funds to the Palestinian Authority (PA) in order to put an end to the situation in which Israelis pay for electricity for the very terrorists who are attempting to murder them.

The Finance Ministry is funding a 3 billion shekel guarantee for the Israel Electric Company in order to avoid a financial crisis.

At the same time, the PA owes the electric company 700 million shekels in unpaid electric bills – which continue to amass despite Israel collecting 400-500 million in tax money on behalf of the PA every month and transferring the sum to the PA.

“Even when the residents of the south Israel are living in a reality of ‘Code Red’, under a barrage of missiles and rockets, the Israeli Electric Company continues to provide free electricity to the shooters and terrorists,” the Legal Forum stated in a letter to Finance Ministry CEO Doron Cohen.

Petraeus’s judgment and Clapper’s obtuseness testify to America’s proble

    Mark Steyn

Let us turn from the post-Thanksgiving scenes of inflamed mobs clubbing each other to the ground for a discounted television set to the comparatively placid boulevards of the Middle East. In Cairo, no sooner had Hillary Clinton’s plane cleared Egyptian air space than Mohamed Morsi issued one-man constitutional amendments declaring himself and his Muslim Brotherhood buddies free from judicial oversight and announced that his predecessor, Hosni Mubarak, would be retried for all the stuff he was acquitted of in the previous trial. Morsi now wields total control over parliament, the judiciary, and the military to a degree Mubarak in his jail cell can only marvel at. Old CIA wisdom: He may be an SOB but he’s our SOB. New post–Arab Spring CIA wisdom: He may be an SOB but at least he’s not our SOB.

But don’t worry. As America’s director of national intelligence, James Clapper, assured the House Intelligence Committee at the time of Mubarak’s fall, the Muslim Brotherhood is a “largely secular” organization. The name’s just for show, same as the Episcopal Church.

    1. In other words, neither of these women pass the smell test. Which is a problem insofar as Petraeus, as CIA director, is supposed to be head of the national smell test, and General Allen, as Petraeus’s successor in Kabul, is supposed to be head of the smell test in Afghanistan. In the Gaza “peace agreement” signed last week, they flew in Hillary Clinton to give the impression that she had something to do with it, whereas in reality she was entirely peripheral to the deal. But Jill Kelley is apparently essential to anything that matters in CentCom: When Pastor Terry Jones was threatening to burn a Koran, General Allen asked Mrs. Kelley to mediate. When radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge was threatening to “deep-fat fry” a Koran, General Allen recommended the mayor of Tampa ask Mrs. Kelley to intervene. The U.S. government is responsible for 43 percent of the planet’s military spending, and apparently all that gets you is that, when the feces hits the fan, the four-star brass start e-mailing Jill Kelley of Tampa. If only she’d been hosting a champagne reception at the Sigonella air base in southern Italy, maybe we could have parachuted her into Benghazi to defuse the situation. Jill is the woman Hillary can only dream of being — at the confluence of all the great geostrategic currents of the age. Why didn’t we fly Jill Kelley to broker the Gaza deal? Instead of a patsy peddling risible talking points like Susan Rice, why can’t we have Jill Kelley as secretary of state?

This is part of a bigger picture. That picture consists of more muslim takeover and an adoption of an “all-supreme muslim leader” who will call upon all men, women and children of the sand-people to coalesce into a monstrous fighting force.

Thus will begin the new crusades. And, as they did the first time, will be instigated by zealots of the ridiculous cult called islam. Only, we’re not there yet but are well on the way.

Much as acquiescent Europe was brutalized by marauders in the 11th century, so shall a similarly acquiescent Europe be dominated by more of the sand-people in the 21st century. Looking at north Africa right now, the plan hasn’t quite gelled yet but when they learn to band together as they did in the middle ages, they will be lumbering over the borders while also activating their already-in-place religious followers.

After much bloodshed and tribulation, it will end as it did the first time with the sand-people driven to near extinction. Sadly, it’s going to have to happen; Their ideology permits nothing less. They will embark on their quest with full packs and when the West finally does decide to recognize that they are all-in, much will have already been lost. Wouldn’t want to offend them now, would we?

It’s a growing weed. It’s getting intertwined into our own culture while the clear-of-mind refuse it and recognize it for what it is. It is war. It is also the preamble to a greater war. It will be a war of which no one cannot participate. They are coming and the only way to stop them is to destroy them. The socialists are trying to co-opt that activity by appeasing them, hoping for an ally in the great war against Christianity but they are on a fool’s errand because while they think they are the users, they themselves are being used and they will be most shocked to find themselves among the first to lose their heads.

You cannot reason with people who think diagonally.

  26. War’s Silent Scourge: Sexual Violence Against Women:

Nearly 40,000 people have died already in Syria’s civil war, and close to 100 are still being killed each day. Homes, hospitals, water infrastructure, and sanitation systems have been destroyed. But one element of this ongoing brutality has been largely overlooked in the media: the appalling sexual violence being visited on the Syrian people by government and militia forces. Such use of sexual violence as a tactic of war is shocking—yet depressingly familiar.

    Closer to Home:

But shortly after her arrival, she tells The Daily Beast, the base chaplain took her aside and warned her to be careful. Within days, she says, junior Marines were calling her “slut” and “whore.” In December 2009, four months after her arrival, Klay formally requested deployment to Afghanistan. The request was denied—as were three subsequent ones. Seven months later, she says, a senior Marine officer and his friend came into her home, a block from the base, and gang-raped her. But that was just the beginning of Klay’s ordeal: because of the retaliation she says she was subjected to after reporting the rape, she fell into a deep depression, and last March she attempted suicide.

Now Klay is leading seven other women in a lawsuit against Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, his predecessors Robert Gates and Donald Rumsfeld, and six current and former heads of the Marine Corps and Navy....

    ............

In this case, Burke is targeting specific installations, most notably the Marine Barracks in Washington, D.C. The base is one of the oldest and most symbolic military installations in the United States. Marines from the base, also known as ”8th and I,” conduct ceremonial honors at the Pentagon and the White House, provide military funeral detail at Arlington National Cemetery, and make up the Silent Drill Platoon, a 24-man rifle platoon that performs a precision-drill exhibition that the military says “exemplifies the professionalism associated with the U.S. Marine Corps.”

As first reported in the forthcoming documentary The Invisible War, which won this year’s audience award at the Sundance Film Festival, Marine Barracks Washington is also, according to several soldiers who have served there, a place where a combination of mandatory drinking events, few other official responsibilities, and a widespread sense of entitlement form a toxic brew. “I’d been to the academy, been in other commands, and been deployed in Iraq, and I’d never seen anything like what I saw there,” Klay tells The Daily Beast. “It’s a base that was founded in the 19th century, and that’s where their attitudes toward women have remained.”

Nothing new about the fact of rape but the persistence and the prevalence are worth noting; far from behavior that "civilization" is culling from the herd.

One could argue that the depth and breadth of sexual violence is a fundamental indictment of the modern world, more so than the rise of "teat-sucking, entitlement-seeking, godless abortionists."

The Klay case is from March 2012 so the story has been out there for awhile. Someone mentioned that a female soldier is more likely to be raped than killed in combat.

Let's call it what it is. The "compromise" by Obama is merely one more step in Obama and Sabelius' statist attempts at growing government in place of private enterprise.

If no one objected or if there wasn't an election coming up, Sabelius would have written the rules to include churches. As it turned out none would stand for it and they new it wouldn't get past SCOTUS thus the compromise.

Just as Obamacare is a major push towards the goal of single-payer, this ruling is an attempt to get private institutions out of what the statists consider the province of government, healthcare. The method is incremental but effective.

It has already worked in D.C. and Illinois and other places. In D.C. Catholic Charities closed down operations rather than be forced recognize and support gay marriage. In Illinois, they closed down their adoption services rather than accomodate practices that go against their faith.

It will be interesting to see what SCOTUS has to say about the Obamacare "compormise". Here, we are talking about one sixth of healthcare facilities in the U.S.

As for the rest, it is amusing to see those that would stamp their little feet and demand, then gloat when a religious institution closes down a facility that refuses to bend to their statist morality.

I'm sure the people who previously benefitted from Catholic Charities in D.C. are equally grateful. Likewise, in Illinois where the system was struggling to keep up with demands for adoption services even before Catholic Services shut down. I'm sure everyone is happy over their "victory'. Well, maybe not everyone. Perhaps, not those who actually benefitted. But the important ones, the arbiters of societal norms, the ones currently writing the rules.

Romney stepped into the emotional birth-control debate earlier this year, when the Obama administration issued a rule requiring religiously affiliated institutions to include birth control in their employee health plans without co-pays. Romney considered the rule a violation of religious liberty. It was then that he called morning-after pills “abortive pills.”

Planned Parenthood also points out that in 2005, when Romney was governor of Massachusetts, he vetoed a bill that would have required hospitals to offer the morning-after pill to rape victims and required pharmacies to sell them without a prescription. Romney said the pills “cause abortions,” The Boston Globe reported. The Massachusetts legislature overrode his veto.

The "compromise" by Obama is merely one more step in Obama and Sabelius' statist attempts at growing government in place of private enterprise.

If you say so. It looks to me like Obama and Sebelius are trying to provide birth control to young women to advance the agenda of increasing personal life options.

But let's call it what it is: a failure of private enterprise (my over-55 health care premiums are busting my bank account), and government (the health care delivery argument, which is complicated both by private and public institutions and practices.)

The Dems tried to fix it. Future Congresses might manage to do that by incrementally reforming the core legislation, in what seems to have become a remarkable recognition of process over the singular event. Whatever happens will be opposed by Republicans.

I've always considered the term "statist morality" to be an oxymoron. (Western) states include constitutional protections of the "from" and "to allow" variety, as described above. Regardless of whose whining about what encroachment, it still beats wearing an ankle bracelet.

This betrays your ignorance of both the issue and the political process.

The issue is constitutional and will ultimately be decided by SCOTUS.

The rest of the comment is just confuused thinking regarding the political process.

      Rules?

Obama changed the 'rules' with a waive of his hands and frankly I believe the 'rules' will likely change again as the two lawsuits currently winding through the system approach the Supreme Court.

Initially, Obama bought support for Obamacare from the Catholic Church by promising none of its principles would be compromised. After the law passed, Sebelius came out and said the churches needed to fund not just contraception (a ploy used by you and those on the left to minimize the magnitude of the change we are talking about) but also abortion services. When things got hot during election season, Obama with a waive of his hand created a 'compromise'. It's all politics.

Even though Obamacare started out 2300 pages long it will likely end up 10,000 to 20,000 pages long after rules are written. To argue what was voted on and approved was written in stone is simplistic.

To argue that people or institutions objecting to the rules now being written equates to them writing law is just plain stupid.

On July 28, 1999, the FDA approved the prescription progestin-only Plan B (two 750 µg levonorgestrel pills) emergency contraceptive.[88]

On August 24, 2006, the FDA approved nonprescription behind-the-counter access to Plan B from pharmacies staffed by a licensed pharmacist for women 18 or older; a prescription-only form of Plan B was made available for younger females aged 17 and younger.[89]

On November 6, 2006, Barr Pharmaceuticals announced that its subsidiary, Duramed Pharmaceuticals, had initiated shipment of dual-label Plan B OTC/Rx and it would be available in pharmacies across the U.S. by mid-November 2006.[90]

On March 23, 2009, a US judge ordered the FDA to allow 17 year olds to acquire Plan B without a prescription.[91] This now changes the August 24, 2006 ruling and Plan B is now available "behind the counter" for men and women. There is a prescription method available for girls under 17.

    39. Now, let's take a poor girl in some small Ms. Town. No car. Someone takes advantage of her the night before. She gets hold of the required money, and walks down to the only pharmacy in town. The fine, Christian asshole haughtily blows her off with "we don't sell that Godless pill, here."

      Now what does she do?

Drop out of school, and raise a baby (with Q, and Rufus' help) that she didn't want to begin with? Does this really make sense?

      Really?

One pharmacist refuses to sell her the pill and she has no other choice but to have a baby.

Sorry, Ruf. Maybe I just too cynical but I just don't buy it. And maybe I've been living in the 'big city' for too long but you almost lost me when you started talking about the 'one' pharmacy in town.

And you know how I feel about arguments that start out "Let's assume..."

Here's the problem as it stands, Q; too many pharmacies are pressured by the fundy loons to not make the morning after pill available. In only 8 States are the pharmacies required, by law, to make it available.

You rant and rave and insist it is your way or the highway. That's not the way it works in a republic or not the way it was invisioned to work by the people who drew up our form of government. You cite polls showing the majority of people support your view but all that really points out is a tyranny of the majority something our form of government was supposed to prevent.

U.S. laws mean nothing if they are not constitutionally sound. You argue that it is wrong for the right to try to overturn Roe v Wade; yet, there are those (including myself) that would argue that Roe v Wade was a false construct fabricated out of whole cloth with no basis within the framework of the constitution.

You take the opposite view but you are one person in 320 million. There are others that disagree with you. Even McCorvey eventually came to decry the decision. Some on your side say, hey, it's my decision. What about the people with an opposite view of these issues that say, hey, it's my decision?

Any society is usually considered a community of people living in a particular country or region and having shared customs, laws, and organizations.

Those customs, laws, and organizations have to be agreed upon and there is a process for deciding how changes will be made. We have elected to live within a federal system ruled as a republican that is defined by a constitution. Our constitution and our laws reflect the mores and values we hold as a society. As we have seen those mores and values can change over time. It's a political process.

You people rant and rave constanly about people on the right not agreeing with you on abortion and/or contraception. (In fact, the disagreement is mainly on abortion since, within the US at least, it is only a small proportion that wishes to outlaw contraception.)

You not only reject the moral basis for which the objections are formed but also insist that those who oppose abortion and/or contraception be forced to pay for those services for others not through the political process (government funding of individual programs) but through government mandates on individuals and institutions.

Sorry, I don't buy it. Especially, when what you propose, IMO, is in conflict with a primary right within our constitution.

Egypt's stock market plummets after Morsi's decree

CAIRO (AP) - Egypt's benchmark stock index has plunged 9.5 percent halfway through the first trading session since the country's Islamist president issued decrees to assume near absolute powers.

Sunday's losses on the Egyptian Exchange's EGX30 index are among the biggest since the turbulent days and weeks after the ouster of authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak last year.

The fall follows the announcement Thursday by President Mohammed Morsi of a package of decrees that place him above any oversight, including judicial, and extend the same protection to two Islamist-dominated bodies: a panel drafting a new constitution and parliament's upper chamber.

Morsi says his measures are designed to "protect the revolution," but they triggered an uproar among non-Islamist political groups now vowing to press on with street protests to force him to back down.

    Our 'smart' diplomacy at work

You must read this entire post by John Hinderaker at Power Line to get the full import of the predictable disaster that has befallen American interests in the Middle East as a result of Egyptian President Morsi's power grab.

    Here's the guts of it:

I am so confused! When anti-Mubarak demonstrators gathered in Tahrir Square and were met with tear gas, they represented the Arab Spring. So what do these anti-Morsi demonstrators represent? Are they Arab Spring too? Or Arab Autumn? Or maybe the seasonal analogies are no longer operative.

The France 24 news report continues:

The rival demonstrations - which took place in several Egyptian cities Friday - exposed the deep divisions in the world's most populous Arab nation five months after Morsi was elected with a 51% sliver of a majority.

What a coincidence! Obama got 51% too. So far, however, I haven't heard anyone refer to Obama's "sliver of a majority."

But never mind that-I am still really, really confused! Mubarak was our friend, but a bad guy. So he had to go, and Obama denounced him and helped force him out. Morsi is our enemy, and also is a bad guy. So Obama thinks he's A-OK, and helped Morsi take power. That's called "smart diplomacy." You probably wouldn't understand.

Other things are confusing, too. Did Obama know that Morsi was about to claim dictatorial powers when he made Morsi the "hero" of the Israel-Gaza cease fire? If so, did he mind? If Obama didn't know-which seems more likely-does he now think that Morsi double-crossed him by capitalizing on his faux diplomatic mission to proclaim himself a dictator? Or is that one more thing that is A-OK with Obama? If Obama doesn't like the fact that Morsi has cut "Arab Spring" democracy off at the knees, does he intend to do anything about it? Or, when bad things happen, is it "smart diplomacy" to do nothing and pretend you don't mind?

I'm not sure Mubarak could have survived anyway, given his only real option was gunning down the protestors. Much worse, as Barry Rubin has constantly pointed out, we abandoned those fearless Egyptians who stood in the streets and embraced the Muslim Brotherhood. This was a mistake that will cost us dearly in the near term, and has the potential of destroying any hope for peace in the Middle East.

What is happening in Egypt now is the predictable result of muddled thinking in the Obama administration - the incomprehensible decision to ignore the secularists and liberals in Egypt and support a totalitarian ideology.

Why should it surprise us, then, when our favored candidate starts acting like a dictator?

  33. 'Satellites show Iran moving quickly to rearm Hamas'
    By JPOST.COM STAFF

Israeli intelligence satellites have spied the loading of rockets and other materiel believed to be destined for the Gaza Strip, The Sunday Times reported citing Israeli officials.

According to the report, Iran began preparing the weapons shipment around the same time Israel and Hamas negotiated cease-fire understandings late last week.
    Related:

The shipment is said to include Iranian-made Fajr-5 medium-range rockets, the same model that was fired into the Tel Aviv and Jerusalem areas during Operation Pillar of Defense, the Times reported.

Last month, following an air attack on a weapons plant near Khartoum, the Defense Ministry's director of policy and political-military affairs accused Sudan of acting as a transit point for weapons shipments to Gaza.

Amos Gilad accused Khartoum of aiding and abetting terrorism, and said the Sudanese regime was “supported by Iran” and was used as a route to transfer weapons to Hamas terrorists in the Gaza Strip, via Egypt.

Sudan accused Israel of attacking the military plant.

The Times report also cited Israeli officials speculating that Iran could be moving longer-range ballistic missiles into Sudan, which could be aimed at Israel from the African country.

The official added that Tehran would act to re-arm Hamas and other Gaza groups quickly, as it sees them as a necessary part of its response to a possible Israeli attack against Iran.

Islamic Terrorists Bomb Egyptian-Gaza Border Base
Terrorists destroyed part of an Egyptian base at Rafiah, challenging Cairo’s control over the Sinai after the ceasefire with Israel.

    By Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu
    First Publish: 11/25/2012, 3:24 PM

Islamic terrorists destroyed part of an Egyptian security building at Rafiah Saturday night, challenging Cairo’s control over the Sinai after the ceasefire with Israel. No one was injured in the explosion at the base, under construction n the Egyptians side of Rafiah, the smuggling capital of Gaza.

The attack came 48 hours after Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi granted himself extensive new powers, which were challenged by Cairo's judiciary.

A separate explosion injured three people further south in the Sinai, where Egypt is building a facility to help it protect the pipeline that ships natural gas to Israel and Jordan. Terrorists have bombed the pipeline more than a dozen times the past two years in an effort to scuttle the agreement to sell gas to Israel.

Saturdays night’s bombing underlined Egypt’s difficulty in re-asserting control over the Sinai, where Hamas terrorists from Gaza, along with Bedouin allies and Al Qaeda-linked terrorist cells, have carved out regions of authority. They have staged increasingly frequent terrorist attacks on Israel. Several Israelis have been killed in the attacks.

Maintaining peace and quiet in the Sinai is a primary task for Egypt, experts said; the new government needs to prove to the United States, Israel, and Hamas that it can carry out its promise to protect Israel from terrorists.

Attacks from the Sinai could undermine the truce, moving the field of battle into the Sinai and eventually spreading back into Gaza, even if Hamas abides by the ceasefire that ended the eight-day Pillar of Defense counterterrorist operation

Great news: Assisted-suicide sitcom coming to BBC
posted at 1:55 pm on November 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Am I kidding? Unfortunately, no. The only bright spot is that it appears to be only a six-episode miniseries:

The Inbetweeners star Blake Harrison is to star in new BBC Three sitcom Way to Go.

The six-part series is described as a “black comedy” about three men who set up an assisted-suicide business.

Harrison will play Scott, who devises the desperate scheme when his terminally ill neighbor asks for his help to die and his brother Joey (Ben Heathcote) is in desperate need of cash to pay off his gambling debts.

NRO’s Wesley Smith calls this the “normalization of suicide,” and notes that this is a case of art reflecting life … er, death, as it were:

Oh, and by the way, this idea was already proposed for real in Oregon ($5000 for the whole package, including music and flowers), but the psychiatrist would-be entrepreneur lost his medical license for other reasons before he could open the doors. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, suicide clinics rake in the dough.

Culture of death, Wesley? What culture of death?

I want to go this way, except with death metal and scenes of cops beating hippies--

UK's NHS 'Liverpool Care Pathway' Looks an Awful Lot Like a Death Panel From Here

    By Tom Blumer | September 02, 2009

There's a reason Matt Drudge just got done celebrating an all-time record August traffic count. His visitors know that he constantly links to newsworthy stories they likely won't find reported prominently in establishment U.S. media outlets, if they're reported at all.

Such will likely be the case with a blockbuster story coming out of Great Britain tonight, courtesy of the U.K. Telegraph. It seems that there's this treatment protocol called the "Liverpool Care Pathway." Under the Pathway's guidelines, according to the Telegraph, "Under the guidelines the decision to diagnose that a patient is close to death is made by the entire medical team treating them, including a senior doctor."

Why, if I didn't know any better, that sounds like a d-d-d-d-death panel, complete with top-down ("senior doctor") supervision.

Here are just a few excerpts from Telegraph Medical Correspondent Kate Devlin's must-read report. Especially note the chilling statistic in the second-last paragraph of the excerpt:

Sentenced to death on the NHS
Patients with terminal illnesses are being made to die prematurely under an NHS scheme to help end their lives, leading doctors warn today.

In a letter to The Daily Telegraph, a group of experts who care for the terminally ill claim that some patients are being wrongly judged as close to death.

Under NHS guidance introduced across England to help doctors and medical staff deal with dying patients, they can then have fluid and drugs withdrawn and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away. But this approach can also mask the signs that their condition is improving, the experts warn.

As a result the scheme is causing a “national crisis” in patient care, the letter states. It has been signed palliative care experts including Professor Peter Millard, Emeritus Professor of Geriatrics, University of London, Dr Peter Hargreaves, a consultant in Palliative Medicine at St Luke’s cancer centre in Guildford, and four others.

“Forecasting death is an inexact science,”they say. Patients are being diagnosed as being close to death “without regard to the fact that the diagnosis could be wrong.

“As a result a national wave of discontent is building up, as family and friends witness the denial of fluids and food to patients."

.... (Dr. Hargreaves) added that some patients were being “wrongly” put on the pathway, which created a “self-fulfilling prophecy” that they would die.

..... “It is supposed to let people die with dignity but it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    1. ..... “It is supposed to let people die with dignity but it can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

“Patients who are allowed to become dehydrated and then become confused can be wrongly put on this pathway.”

In 2007-08 16.5 per cent of deaths in Britain came about after continuous deep sedation, according to researchers at the Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry, twice as many as in Belgium and the Netherlands.

“If they are sedated it is much harder to see that a patient is getting better,” Prof Millard said.

Based on the above 16.5% statistic, about 95,000 of the UK's 574,700 deaths in 2007 "came after continuous deep sedation." If the UK's death rate after continuous deep sedation would have replicated Belgium and the Netherlands, about 47,000 fewer would have died under those circumstances. How many of them should still be alive today? The suggestion that the number is in the thousands, if not the tens of thousands, would appear to be not at all unreasonable.

So whaddaya think, New York Times, Washington Post, LA Times, Associated Press, and Big 3 networks? In the midst of an attempt to impose a statist health care system on this country, isn't the fact that one of the oldest statist health care systems in the world is more than likely systematically and prematurely offing thousands of patients a story? Or are you going to let Matt Drudge keep linking to the real news you ignore until you're no longing just circling the drain, but actually in it?

  38. END OF THE DOCTOR'S SURGERY
Jeremy Hunt is planning for doctors to assess patients via iPads

Jeremy Hunt is planning for doctors to assess patients via iPads

    Sunday November 25,2012
    By Ted Jeory

A BID to save nearly £3billion by slashing appointments with a doctor and treating patients via computer will put lives at risk, ministers were warned.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt is planning a technological revolution that could spell the end of the traditional doctor’s surgery.

A new system of “virtual clinics” is being planned in which GPs connect with patients via iPads and Skype, an idea that NHS bosses are importing from India.

The reforms would save £2.9billion “almost immediately” and improve the lives of most patients, for example by avoiding the need to find child care during appointments, Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter said last week.

However, critics are concerned the initiative would create a two-tier NHS in which the less technologically able, particularly the elderly, would be left behind.

Shadow Health Secretary Andy Burnham called the plan “dangerous”, while Age UK said cutting the number of personal appointments would erode the vital trust between doctor and patient.

    Health Minister Dr Dan Poulter

The ideas, contained in a Health Department report called Digital First, include arming community nurses with iPads in rural areas and making more use of Skype video calling between GPs and patients. There will be more online assessments “augmented” with video calls.

Mobile phone “apps” will be used to access lab reports and health records and negative test results will be sent by text messages rather than delivered in person. Mr Hunt, who made a fortune by creating an internet company, believes that while mobile broadband technology is revolutionising most walks of life, there is a problem once people encounter the relatively antiquated systems of the NHS.

The Government is trying to fill a £20billion NHS funding gap and health chiefs want to reduce “needless” appointments that clog up staff time.

Patients would be encouraged not to attend GPs’ surgeries, firstly by telephone assessments and then by video links. NHS bosses have been examining practices in India where video-conferencing has proved successful with some patients.

In a Westminster debate last week, Dr Poulter said 15 million people with long-term conditions accounted for 70 per cent of all in-patient beds. “Many such hospital stays could be avoided through better management, including the better use of mobile technologies, to prevent people from becoming so unwell in the first place that they need to be admitted to hospital.

“We need to harness and better utilise more modern types of technology such as telehealth and mobile technology to support people better in their own homes and to drive down the cost of care.

“About one-third of patients do not necessarily need a face-to-face GP appointment.” In a statement to the Sunday Express, he stated: “It is important to stress that patients who are unwell and need to see their GP will still always have quality face-to-face time with them.

“The Government also recognises that not everyone, particularly frail older people, will have easy access to the internet.”

However, Age UK’s boss Michelle Mitchell warned: “Many people of all ages still prefer human contact.

“It also gives the medical professional the chance to recognise health issues that may not be obvious from a distance.”

Katherine Murphy, chief executive of the Patients Association, said: “The telehealth agenda must be driven by a desire to improve clinical outcomes and patient care, not the Government’s plans to save £20billion.”

Mr Burnham warned: “Older people who don’t have access to the internet will lose out.”

Their suffering has only begun. Bye bye Miss American Pie! You know the song you hippies. Sing it! Don't you remember? The 1971 hit song by American song writer Don McLean:

"And, as I watched him on the stage my hands were clenched in fists of rage.

No angel born in Hell could break that Satan's spell

And, as the flames climbed high into the night to light the sacrificial rite, I saw...

Satan laughing with delight the day the music died

He was singing, bye bye Miss American Pie

Drove my Chevy to the levee, but the levee was dry

Them good ol' boys were drinking whiskey and rye, singing...

This'll be the day that I die

This'll be the day that I die

      So, the question remains:

How long will America suffer and to what depths?

    3. Kicked Romney's ass among those with Advanced Degrees.

      Tell it to Pravda. :)

College folk are mostly really stupid when it comes to politics. Take a look at the freaks in Berkeley. Besides, they are all hoping for some soft government job.

Looks like Catalonia will have a referendum on splitting off from Spain.
