Teenager lashed 100 times in Timbuktu for having child out of wedlock
An 18-year-old pregnant woman and her boyfriend were both lashed 100 times by Islamists in Timbuktu in Mali as punishment for "having a child out of wedlock".
The sentence was carried out on the orders of Ansar Dine, a militant Muslim organisation that has seized territory in the desert north of the West African country.
"People were watching it was like a show," said Mohamed Ould Babby, a local official.
"I was there, I saw the youths arriving at the square, I saw them being whipped, it is the first time I have seen something like that." The woman, who was three months pregnant, has another child with her partner but the couple is not married.
According to Ansar Dine's strict interpretation of Islamic laws, that means the pair have committed the crime of "fornication", which is punishable with 100 lashes.
An Islamic police official in the town said six other women who had had children outside of marriage would soon be "punished by Islamic law”.
People living in Timbuktu, the ancient city in Mali's southern Sahara desert, have reported that the Islamists have ordered women to wear full veils, whipped smokers and destroyed shopkeepers' stocks of cigarettes.
Ansar Dine took control of northern Mali, with help from Tuareg rebels, when army officers mutinied in the capital, Bamako, and ousted the democratically-elected government.

The digital revolution is about 20 to 25 years latter than expected (but this country has always had tunnel vision - no more.) The communications revolution will bring these kinds of behaviors to an abrupt end - in the historical time frame, but certainly not fast enough to save we don't yet know how many lives. People can not and will not live under such circumstances when the media images broadcast every minute of every day the contours of "a better life."

I see him in more of the David Maraniss light (which I agree was sympathetic, if not explicitly insightful, and strikes me as more accurate than the beady-eyed Marxist intent on destroying western civilization) but, that doesn't immunize him against criticism as a political professional, and it doesn't excuse amateur hour in the DoJ courtesy of Holder. Games like the one he was apparently part of, if they were being run to destabilize cartel control of local Mexican governments as per the earlier suggestion, are too vulnerable to the inspired side deals that apparently took this one down. The last words you want to hear on border patrol are: Smile you're on Candide Camera Gringo.
Neither George Bush nor Barack Obama are to my taste. Of the two, Bush did more damage. Next on deck is Romney and I have no enthusiasm for him. I am beginning to think I dislike presidents, kings and knaves.

DeleteHere I will pretty much remain quiet as I have no insight, supplemental to what has already been opined by the analysts, but the one thing I reject, in its totality, is that the current state represents a failure of progressive thought/ideology and/or a resurgence of conservative thought/ideology (whatever that is in the post-Buckley world.)
Every generation demonstrates an enduring vulnerability to the idea that they are or will be grand and pivotal in some historic sense of milestone and mission-critical inflection points leading to any variety of alternative futures, if only, if only, if only.... The grandiosity is misplaced. We are not at an inflection point of history. We are in the throes of a severe correction due to old liabilities and weaknesses.
This has less to do with FDR and the rise of the welfare state than it does with a failure of political leadership. From what I read between the lines, the "national dialogue" has begun in earnest. Washingtonians have picked up on the subtext, knaves and fools alike.
I predict some will discover they're not as smart as they think, especially those predicting the demise of this country.

DeleteWhen i was a boy in the fifties, there were 2-3 billion people and most of the world still suffered from the aftermath of WWII. Now we have 6-7 billion and have everything from post colonialism to huge changes in medicine farming and technology. The changes are enormous and have been continuous.
Before WWII we hardly had an army and rapidly after WWII we dismantled the US war machine. By the time of the Korean war the US military was a shadow of its former self.
On my troop train to Biloxi Mississippi from Houston we stopped and changed trains in New Orleans. You had two sets of benches, two bathrooms and two sets of water fountains fro whites and colored.
Shortly after that Bull Connors shocked the nation. Kennedy was shot and the Cold War kicked into high gear. All of this had an effect on society and politics.
It was a Powerful shock. However, I think you and Max would agree, "it wasn't a Fatal shock."

Caning, pedophilia, execution by fundamentalists have all been condemned here before. And while you took the time to call out the bar on this subject, the only other opinion you offered was that the "poor women was being whipped half to death", something that is evident to anyone looking at the picture.

The Obama Record: The most frightening aspect of this president may not be his radical ideology but his rank dishonesty in selling that ideology. Now he's been caught lying about family racism.
In "Dreams from My Father," his 1995 memoir, Obama used the story of his paternal grandfather's imprisonment and torture at the hands of British colonists in Kenya as an example of white cruelty. He claimed Hussein Onyango Obama was unjustly detained for six months before being released a crippled, lice-ridden "old man."
In fact, none of it is true, according to Washington Post editor and biographer David Maraniss, who traveled to Kenya to investigate the tale. His grandfather was not detained or beaten by his "white rulers," as Obama, writing as a 34-year-old lawyer, claimed.
This is only the latest example of a growing body of fabrications, embellishments and outright lies told by this president, who has a real and possibly pathological problem with the truth.
Stacked up, his whoppers would make even Bill Clinton blush. Here's a sampling:
Lie No. 1: Obama has repeatedly claimed his white grandfather, Stanley Dunham, "fought in Patton's army," when he was a clerk with no combat in WWII.
Lie No. 2: Obama claimed Dunham, a communist sympathizer, signed up for duty "the day after Pearl Harbor," when in fact he waited six months.

Lie No. 3: Obama claimed his father "fought when he got back to Kenya against tribalism and nepotism, but ultimately was blackballed from the government," when in fact he fought against capitalism and lost his job when he advocated communism.
