Gaddafi, not looking too good.
A senior NTC official has said that Muammar Gaddafi has died of his wounds after being captured near Sirte.
Another NTC commander said that Moussa Ibrahim, former spokesman for Muammar Gaddafi's fallen government, was also captured near the Sirte.
Abdul Hakim Al Jalil, commander of the 11th brigade, also said he had seen the body of the chief of Gaddafi's armed forces, Abu Bakr Younus Jabr.
"I've seen him with my own eyes," he said and showed Reuters a picture of Jabr's body.
"Moussa Ibrahim was also captured and both of them were transferred to (our) operations room."
Earlier, Jamal abu-Shaalah, a field commander of NTC, told Al Jazeera that the toppled leader had been seized, but it was not clear whether he was dead or alive.
"He's captured. He's wounded in both legs ... He's been taken away by ambulance," Abdel Majid, a senior NTC military official said.
The news came shortly after NTC claimed capturing Sirte, Gaddafi's hometown, after weeks of fighting.
NATO and the US state department said it cannot confirm the reports of Gaddafi's death. Meanwhile in Benghazi, crowds gathered in the streets to start celebrating the reports of Gaddafi's death. - Aljazeera
So Gaddafi is dead and Sirte has finally fallen, but at what price mass descruction , civilian deaths, homes burnt and looted hardly call it "liberated." Now the real problems begin.

Official confirmation from NATO on an attack by their aircraft on a pro-Gaddafi this morning: "At approximately 0830 local time (GMT+2) today, NATO aircraft struck two pro-Kadhafi forces military vehicles which were part of a larger group manoeuvring in the vicinity of Sirte," spokesman Colonel Roland Lavoie said in a statement.

Ongoing violence against Christians in Iraq has produced an accelerated exodus of believers recently and numbering in the hundreds of thousands over the last 10 years, said Open Doors USA officials.
While the world’s attention has shifted to such countries as Syria, Egypt, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the organisation warns that the mass movement of Christians in Iraq continues unabated.
It estimates that the number of Christians before the Gulf War in 1991 was about one million.
“That number fell to an estimated 850,000 in 2003 at the start of the US-led invasion that ended the Saddam Hussein regime. Since then the numbers have plummeted," the organisation says.
“At the beginning of the summer, Open Doors estimated the number of Christians remaining in Iraq at 345,000. However, the number decreases every month.

ReplyDeleteThe real threat from Libya is the series of Russian and French anti-aircraft missiles which have claimed one US plane in 1986 and might pose a threat to the UN mission to help Libya’s rebels. The reality is that the technology of Libya’s anti-aircraft missiles lack modern capabilities and might be at the same level as Iraq’s air defences in the 1990s. Modern long range systems like the S-300/SA-10 Grumble which use phased radar arrays are not possessed by Libya and systems to shoot down low flying aircraft like the TOR-M1/SA-15 Gauntlet and the BUK-M1/SA-11 Gadfly are not in Gadhafi’s inventory. Anti-aircraft guns such as the ZSU-23-2 and ZPU-4 have been seen on film being used by rebels in various versions and were proven most useful a generation ago.
Libya’s main air defence and what should worry the UN Security Council the most is the SA-7 portable anti-aircraft missile. Like the shoulder launched Stinger, this Russian version is possessed by both sides of the conflict in Libya and can become a dangerous threat and are hard to detect. Beyond the SA-7s, Libya’s air defence is made up of mostly dated anti-aircraft missiles. Much of Libya’s defence is made up of S-75/SA-2 missiles, that are best known for their effectiveness in the Vietnam war, and the S-125/SA-3 Goa missiles which claimed one victory in knocking out one US jet in 1986. The greatest threats to UN forces might come from the mobile French Crotale anti-aircraft missile system. Likely one of the older versions of the Crotale such as the Crotale 4000 or 5000 series, these missiles could pose a significant threat to low flying aircraft and are likely used in line with Gadafi’s tank forces in order to protect his T-62s and T-72 and very old T-55 variants which are pushing into rebel strongholds as you read this. The greatest threat and the least amount of missiles are the S-200/SA-5 Gammon long range anti-aircraft system that could pose a significant threat to Allied aircraft. Despite these relatively advanced missiles, generations of countermeasures and methods to destroy AA missiles and radars have been developed specifically to counterbalance such systems.

Hard to say who was selling. The missiles were reportedly left unguarded after the rebels punched through Gadhafi's defenses.
Could have been rebels trying to make a buck, opportunists, or al Queda or other terrorist operatives.
Where are they going? Looks like most are headed for the Sinai.
In the next streeam, the point is made that Gadhafi's death represents rough justice well deserved though long delayed for the victims at Lockerbie.
