US Media Portrays America as Racist?

HAT TIP: Desert Rat

Why can't Barack Obama tell the world about American tolerance?

The controversy over the 'Ground Zero mosque' has portrayed the United States as a land of bigots. Toby Harnden wonders why the US President has helped fuel this myth.

Toby Harnden's American Way Telegraph
Published: 2:00PM BST 28 Aug 2010

It took a Manhattan taxi driver called Ahmed Sharif to speak out for America, which is being vilified as bigoted and Islamophobic because of the controversy generated by opposition to the so-called "Ground Zero mosque".
The United States was his dream country, he enthused, and he loved New York City. "I feel like I belong here. This is the city actually [for] all colours, races, religion, everyone. We live here side by side peacefully."

Which was a pretty noble sentiment coming from a man whose throat had been slashed by a drunken, deranged passenger who had inquired whether he was a Muslim before pulling out a knife and shouting "Peace be upon you" in Arabic.

As the whole world knows, there is a furore raging over the proposed building of a 15-storey Islamic community centre, containing a mosque, two blocks from Ground Zero, site of the 9/11 terrorist attacks by al-Qaeda.
America's liberal elites have been falling over themselves to denounce their country and fellow citizens as anti-Muslim xenophobes who don't understand that it was not all followers of Islam who were responsible for the atrocities of 2001.

Certainly, some Americans opposed to what is now known as the Park51centre (its previous name of Cordoba centre, a reference to a mosque built in Spain on the site of a Christian church to symbolise a Muslim victory, did not quite strike the right public relations note) are motivated by bigotry.

But it was the centre's Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf himself who linked its purpose to its proximity to the Ground Zero site. It is entirely valid to question whether this is the right approach to building interfaith bridges.

Rauf, who once described the US policies as "an accessory to the crime" of 9/11, stated in Bahrain last week that all the "attention is a sign of the success of our efforts" – an utterance that shows he is stupid, mischievous or worse.
Even if the aim of building the centre there was to encourage religious understanding, that is clearly no longer a possible outcome. So what kind of success was Rauf referring to?

To want to debate such matters, however, is judged as beyond the pale. Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York tried to shut down discussion by saying that opponents of Rauf's initiative "ought to be ashamed of themselves". Presumably, that includes Bangladeshi-born Sharif, who doesn't support the Park51 centre.

President Barack Obama said that the US constitution guarantees religious freedom (which no one disputes). The American mainstream media and commentariat has stridently and almost uniformly championed Rauf's cause. In doing so, they've happily trashed their fellow Americans, stating they're motivated only by intolerance.

In fact, most evidence points to the US being one of the most tolerant countries in the world. A poll from you won't see cited much because it doesn't fit the prevailing narrative was recently conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute.

It found that 76 per cent of Americans would support Muslims in their community building an Islamic centre or mosque provided they followed the same rules and regulations required of other religious groups. But the 9/11 site is seen as different. After the 9/11 attacks there was no anti-Muslim backlash in the US.

Obama's ill-judged intervention, and the shrill outrage of his allies in the intelligentsia, has damaged America's standing in the world by fuelling anti-American stereotypes.

Aides to General David Petraeus, commanding troops in Afghanistan, say he is livid about the portrayal of the US as a hotbed of anti-Muslim bigotry and fears it may undermine the war effort, which is based on partnership with an Islamic regime.

Many Americans are incensed by the way that legitimate protest and questioning of Obama's policies is routinely branded as racist or ignorant. They are tired of being told what to think and when to think it.

During the 2008 campaign, for instance, you were a bigot if you mentioned Obama's middle name or his Muslim background. Yet once he was elected, he went to Ankara and Cairo to proclaim that his full name was "Barack Hussein Obama".

Ahmed Sharif, a victim of real anti-Muslim bigotry, stated that the attack on him was an aberration and that America is a land of tolerance and opportunity. What a shame that Obama, despite his much-vaunted gift with words, appears unable to speak about such things with similar eloquence.

It goes back, once again, to the misconceived concept of there being a "War with Islam" that the US is engaged in.

It is obvious to anyone that reads the EB that there are more than few folks in the United States that believe there is such a war going on.

It is also obvious that to promote and advocate that position is a detriment to US foreign policy. As General P is reported to believe.
The current US foreign policy was formulated by Republicans and is being carried out by Democrats, today. It is the bi-partisan Federal policy that there is no "War with Islam". That Islam, as a religion or belief system, had nothing to do with the attacks of 11SEP01.
Those attacks were carried out by a criminal element, renegades.
    So the official story goes.

  4. Exploiting the Mosque Controversy

    Abraham H. Foxman

National Director of the Anti-Defamation League

Most distressing is the surfacing among certain public figures of outrageous comments about Islam, comments which run counter to everything America is about.

One such notable figure is Franklin Graham, the successor to his father Billy Graham's ministry. In his criticism of the mosque, he launches an all-out assault against Islam itself.

On August 18, the Rev. Graham told Time magazine: "President Bush and President Obama made great mistakes when they said Islam is a peaceful religion. It is not. There is no evidence in its history. It's a religion of hatred. It's a religion of war."

And more: "The goal of Islam is world domination. That's the goal. ... They will claim now that the World Trade Center property and everything within that area is now Islamic land...."

    ...

This kind of bigotry and stereotyping against a great world religion is contrary to everything that America stands for.

Yet in the current political climate, and in the ongoing debate over the proposed Islamic cultural center two blocks north of Ground Zero, an intensified level of anti-Muslim bigotry has surfaced in a variety of public forums. The Rev. Graham's remarks just scratch the surface of a deeply entrenched problem in our society of anti-Muslim scapegoating.

Several groups with extreme anti-Muslim agendas have launched public campaigns that have both sheltered and fueled this bigotry. One Florida-based group, for example, has plans to observe an "International Burn a Koran Day" on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The campaign is the latest tactic employed by an organization led by Pastor Terry Jones, author of the book Islam is the Devil.
    ...

What's more, there have been repeated instances where mosques around the country have become targets of anti-Muslim protests, hateful invective, stereotyping, and worse. We have counted more than a dozen instances in recent months where mosques have been targeted for protests and violence. On May 10, for example, a pipe bomb exploded at an Islamic center in Jacksonville, Florida. In July, a fire at the Islamic Center of Marietta, Georgia, was blamed on arsonists. Other mosques have weathered protests where worshippers were greeted with messages that "Jesus Hates Muslims" and "Islam is a Lie."

We hope that all Americans, whatever their legitimate differences of opinion on the wisdom of building a mosque abutting Ground Zero, will reject this demonization of Islam.

We couldn't have asked for the most perfect day of nothing but blue skies and a day full of laughter. I did learn one thing, Michele, is not only a partner but she is the instigator and as I follow suit it's always my mouth that gets me into trouble.

As we lay across the double sided raft to float around the lazy river we came up to a life guard with a sign posted next to his stand. It read "Sha lo Water"

Michele noticed the missing letters and of course had to make it aware to the life guard that there were letters missing. The guard looked at the sign and turned to us and jokingly said, "Isn't that the way you spell it?"

So, I looked to see if there was anyone around (I swear) before I blurted out, "I guess they had to spell it that way for all the foreigners here that don't understand English."

Wait are you ready for the kicker? He turned to us and shouted something in a different language.

As the day went on a group of people came and sat in front of us. The one girl was trying to arrange her chair around the two we weren't occupying at the time. Michele said to her several times, "You can move the chairs if you want it won't be a problem." The girl looked at her with a blank stare, you know the one that says I don't understand, and then just sat down in her chair. Michele asked me to move the chairs for the girl but I told her I was getting up and that it wasn't my fault she didn't understand what you were saying.

  36. GAINESVILLE, Fla. — If building an Islamic center near ground zero amounts to the epitome of Muslim insensitivity, as critics of the project have claimed, what should the world make of Terry Jones, the evangelical pastor here who plans to memorialize the Sept. 11 attacks with a bonfire of Korans?

Mr. Jones, 58, a former hotel manager with a red face and a white handlebar mustache, argues that as an American Christian he has a right to burn Islam’s sacred book because “it’s full of lies.” And in another era, he might have been easily ignored, as he was last year when he posted a sign at his church declaring “Islam is of the devil.”

But now the global spotlight has shifted. With the debate in New York putting religious tensions front and center, Mr. Jones has suddenly attracted thousands of fans and critics on Facebook, while around the world he is being presented as a symbol of American anti-Islamic sentiment.

My wife and kids and I were at the C d'Alene beach one year getting ready to watch the fireworks when sobbing broke out in the group of people right next to us. Their little boy had just drowned. Amongst all those people swimming, somehow he wasn't missed, when he went under. They were all in shock, and the mother was in a very bad way. Really sad, things can happen. The grandparents were there too. My wife got so upset we just went home.

  38. Mr. Jones who seems to spend much of his time inside a dank, dark office with a poster from the movie “Braveheart” and a picture of former President George W. Bush, appears to be largely oblivious to the potential consequences of his plans. Speaking in short sentences with a matter-of-fact drawl, he said that he could not understand why other Christians, including the nation’s largest evangelical association, had called for him to cancel “International Burn a Koran Day.”

He acknowledged that it had brought in at least $1,000 in donations. But he said that the interviews he had done with around 150 news outlets all over the world were useful mainly because they had helped him “send a message to Islam and the pushers of Shariah law: that it is not what we want.”

Mr. Jones said that nothing in particular had set him off. Asked about his knowledge of the Koran, he said plainly: “I have no experience with it whatsoever. I only know what the Bible says.”

  55. An Overview of Clandestine Abortion in Latin America

    December 1996
    Ahora disponible en espaƱol
Each year, more than four million women in Latin America undergo an induced abortion. Because most abortions are illegal, these procedures are performed under clandestine and often dangerous conditions. As a result, the region faces a serious public health problem that threatens women's lives, endangers their reproductive health and imposes a severe strain on already overextended health and hospital systems.
The practice of induced abortion in Latin America is shrouded in secrecy, a direct result of the stringent legal limitations on abortion throughout most of the region. Induced abortion is punishable by law in almost every country except Cuba and a few other Caribbean nations. In most of the region, doctors may legally terminate a pregnancy that threatens the life of the woman, that results from rape or incest, or that is characterized by fetal deformity,1 but these options are rarely used.
Concern over the high level of clandestine abortion in Latin America is not new. Policymakers and health professionals have been aware for the past 20-30 years that unsafe procedures were being performed in most countries of the region, and at a leve l with serious consequences for women's health and for the cost of national health care services.

But then again, that is the modern civilization that we have been blessed with. A civilization that the Story of "o" attributes to Judaism. How right he is.

The civilization is quite barbaric, really.

Which takes us back to the basic theme of equivalency. bob told us that we were at War with Islam.
    Which amounted to:
    Civilization vs Barbarity.

That premise is rejected by the facts. By the American Holocaust as well as the Israeli one. We both slaughter innocents. Neither is a hallmark of real civilization, both are barbaric.
    No doubt of that.

And no, Story of "o", wearing a condom is not equivalent to abortion. There is no conception, thus no killing.

    Simple stuff, really.

Guess we start with motive, scope and scale. Sweet stuff.

In 2008 there were 112,803 live births to Jewish mothers, in Israel.
According to Friends of Efrat,, a source referenced by allen as legitimate, there are 50,000 abortions in Israel, every year.

So, simply put, at third of Jewish pregnancies, in Israel end in the premature death of the baby.

    1 out of 3.

The Friends of Efrat do a comparison, death by terrorist, as opposed to deaths by Israeli, as applies to babies.

1 death per week is attributed to terror.
900 per week, attributed to infanticide.

Truly, the threat to Israel is not foreign or domestic terror. It is internal.

Let's see if we can find out why.

The rabbis based their ruling primarily on Genesis 9:6, which reads: "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." The rabbis, in making their ruling based on this text, affirmed the dignity of unborn persons, all of whom are made in the image of God.

  61. Efrat isn’t trying to change abortion laws. Instead, it hopes women will seek its support rather than have an abortion for economic reasons.

“We’re not against abortions,” Tidhar said. “We’re for women.”

Efrat President Dr. Eli Schussheim said the organization is built around former clients who, having seen that it’s possible to have a child in spite of harsh economic realities, will then counsel other women against abortion.

So, are a third of Israeli pregnancies being terminated, prematurely, for economic reasons, when Israel's economy is booming?

Seems hard to fathom, if women are held in high esteem, that in good economic times that a third of the pregnant women would feel it economically impossible to care for their babies after they were born.

Meanwhile, it seems that money is the primary concern of those that are killing their children, prematurely.

... Tidhar describes her organization’s “typical” client: “The vast majority of the women who come to us are religiously traditional and married. Usually this isn’t their first pregnancy. The classic case says, ‘We already have three kids. My husband says we won’t be able to manage financially, and he’s right.’”

The Israeli buy attack submarines, tanks and nuclear armaments enough to destroy the most of the people in their region of Arabia.

    Elevating fear above people.
    Assuring their own demographic self-destruction.

  63. According to those two Rabbis, who one would assume would know:

"The vast majority of abortions are unnecessary and strictly forbidden according to halacha because they are carried out even when the pregnancies do not endanger the mother's health," the rabbis wrote in their decision.

    Ever more interesting.

I am certainly glad the Story of "o" continues to write me into the script.

  64. It is easy to defend the humanity of those Jewish babies, I just have to allow the Rabbis do it, for me.

  65. It seems that the priorities of the Israeli Government do not put Jewish lives, first.

    Munitions come first.

They are promoting a culture and modern civilization that emphasizes the Industrialization of Death.

As I posited just the other day.

  66. Israel Organ Trafficking Scammers Arrested

    by STEPHANIE DEARING (DIGITAL JOURNAL)

(April 8, 2010) According to Israeli press, police arrested six men in northern Israel Tuesday, in a crack-down on illegal human organ trafficking.

Police had launched an investigation after receiving a number of complaints from people who had responded to a newspaper ad saying respondents would be paid $100,000 for a kidney. The respondents participated, giving up a kidney in surgery completed out of Israel, but when they returned home, they were not paid.

The investigation culminated in a raid which resulted in the arrests of an Israeli reserve Brigadier General along with two lawyers.

Police said they uncovered a large operation at work in Israel, one that takes advantage of people experiencing kidney problems as well as people with financial difficulties.

  67. The United States, in the year ending in December of 2009 had a total of 4,136,000 live births.

The last year for which I can find abortion data is 2005, with 1.21 million abortions.

A tad more accurate than given us in the Story of "o". He does confirm one thing for us though.
Israel is equivalent or even more barbaric than their neighboring Semitics, when it comes to slaughtering innocents.

Which is the core of my over riding argument.
    Vindicated on that score, again.

But still we are all quite barbaric.

  68. Italy has denied religious status to Islam.
Politicians cited extremist (fundamentalist) imams, polygamy and failure to uphold women's rights by Muslim immigrants as obstacles to recognizing Islam as an official religion in Italy.
