Can the Republicans screw up the next Presidential campaign?

The Republicans could not be foolish enough to think the American public would go for Sarah Palin or Mike Huckabee in 2012, could they? Barack Obama could not possibly be that lucky, you think?

What the election results mean for Barack Obama and Sarah Palin

Toby Harnden
Telegraph

So, 24 hours after the votes have been counted and as the chattering classes fall silent, what does it all mean? Here are 10 thoughts to take away:
  1. Barack Obama needs to be very afraid. If he doesn’t start to notch up concrete achievements, the Democrats could take a pasting in next year’s mid-terms, setting the stage for his being a one-term president.
  2. Sarah Palin roared and had a considerable impact in New York’s 23rd District, which the Democrat narrowly won. Trouble is for her that the result showed the limits of her appeal. There was no exit polling and so there is much supposition but it seems that her intervention energised conservatives but alienated centrists. Perhaps the national Republican who came out best was Mitt Romney, who decided not to get involved.
  3. The 2008 presidential election was probably an aberration rather than a seismic shift in the political landscape. Obama’s winning formula of massive turnout from the young and the black plus support from independents seems to be a thing of history.
  4. Bob McDonnell’s thumping 18-point win in Virginia shows how Republicans can win again. He and Chris Christie, the New Jersey victor, did not take up Palin’s offer to campaign for them and played down their social conservatism – so this could be bad news for Palinites.
  5. The national Republican party is in disarray. If they don’t get their act together then Obama will win a second term by default if nothing else.
  6. The media narrative about NY23 – that it was about an intolerant Right purging a noble moderate – is rubbish. What happened was a very liberal Republican and awful candidate was chosen in error/arrogance and the people rejected her. She then showed her true colours by sabotaging the GOP. There’s a lot of Democratic gloating but you can bet the farm on a Republican being elected there in a year’s time.
  7. This is likely to make health-care reform more difficult to achieve because conservative Democrats in the House will be fearful of signing their own death warrant by backing Nancy Pelosi and Obama.
  8. Calling your opponent fat is not a winning strategy. Even if he is.
  9. After the result in Maine, the battle over gay marriage is far from over.
  10. It’s the economy stupid and despite all the White House spin, it seems they get that.

  1. There is one solid message and that 2008 was a reaction against George Bush and the Republicans.

    Obama seemed a reasonable alternative.

Obama will believe that the answer is for him to spend more time on Air Force O and make more speeches.

Obama should be a single termer. He is incapable of staying out of the limelight and people are tired of him after one year.

Three more years of listening to speeches by Obama should finish him off.

The problem is Obama has a secret weapon and that is the Republican Party.

  2. Israel is gonna hit Iran, Iran is going to close the Strait of Hormuz, oil is going to $200, gas at $6 a gallon, inflation will return, Obama's gonna put on a sweater and give his famous "Debility" speech where he blames Americans for our country's decrepitude and enfeeblement. That's what's going to make him a one-termer. Problem is, there's no Ronald Reagan waiting in the wings.

  14. Iran Raises Uranium Output as Photos Show Need for Wider Checks

Nov. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Satellite photos indicate that Iran has increased production at a uranium mine, underscoring the need for wider UN inspections to determine whether the country is trying to build a nuclear weapon.

Evidence of stepped-up activity at the Gchine mine, near the Persian Gulf coast city of Bandar Abbas, is seen in pictures obtained by Bloomberg News and the Washington-based New America Foundation, according to four nuclear analysts who examined the images. The mine could produce enough uranium to craft at least two atomic bombs a year, experts said.

  15. 500 Tons of Weapons for Hezbollah Intercepted by Israeli Navy, 4 Nov 2009
Massive Arms Shipment Intended for Hezbollah Intercepted by Israel Navy

Roughly 500 tons of weapons, rockets, and missiles was uncovered aboard the cargo vessel “Francop” flying an Antiguan flag, which was intercepted and brought to the Ashdod port. The Israel Navy force which intercepted the ship included naval commandos, missile boats, intelligence and explosive experts.

36 shipping containers with 500 tons of weaponry were found on the ship disguised as civilian cargo, and hidden among hundreds of other containers onboard.

Israel Naval and Engineering Corps forces are currently unloading the containers and are sorting through the various types of weaponry found aboard.

The naval commando force boarded the vessel and conducted an initial search. The search was conducted in accordance with the usual search protocols as dictated by International Law.

Following the initial search and after it became clear that the vessel was carrying weapons, the vessel was directed by the Israel Navy to dock at the Israeli Ashdod Naval base for additional searches and a detailed inspection of the hull’s cargo. It should be emphasized that the captain of the ship agreed to the search. The Israel Navy conducted all activity without any force.

The weapons found onboard the ship originate from Iran, and were intended for the Hezbollah terror organization, for use against the State of Israel and its citizens. The weapons uncovered at sea last night constitute a harsh violation of UN Security Council Resolutions 1747 and 1701 that strictly forbid Iran from exporting or trading any form of weapons.

  16. Iran Protests Against U.S. and Regime on Hostage Anniversary
Government Cracks Down on Regime's Opponents During Protests

    By LARA SETRAKIAN
    Nov. 4, 2009—

Iranian protesters took to the streets today as they do every Nov. 4 to mark the 30th anniversary of the U.S. embassy takeover.

But this year, opponents of the Iranian regime used the government sanctioned day of street demonstrations to challenge the hard line administration.

While supporters of the regime led chants of "death to America," crowds nearby shouted "death to the dictator," a veiled reference to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his political ally, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

State security forces had issued a warning against opposition protests, and broke up the crowds using batons, tear gas, and gunfire.

The International Campaign for Human Rights cited thousands of protesters collecting in Tehran, Tabriz, Shiraz and other major cities before clashes with security forces. Opposition leader and former presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi was reportedly injured, struck by a tear gas canister.

"We probably were one tenth of what we were in Qods Day, but they had many time more of their thugs in uniform out there, with lot of preparation," said one protester, referring to riot police and the state-sponsored rally last month that were also used as an opposition stage. "The government was clearly scared."

The opposition had organized and publicized its rallies for weeks using graffiti, digital posters distributed online, and messages written in green on paper money.

The two sides, the regime and the opposition "Green Movement," have reoriented Iran and its politics since this summer's disputed presidential election. It has produced a tangled political scenario.

The regime has focused on enforcing order at home and negotiating with the West over its nuclear program. While the conservative regime engages in talks with the U.S. and its allies, hardliners continue to blame the West for encouraging opposition protests.

Opposition supporters, meanwhile, are trying to discourage Washington from negotiating with Tehran. Some protesters today chanted, "Obama, Obama, you're with them or you're with us," a rhyming verse in Persian expressing frustration at U.S. open engagement with Ahmadinejad's government.

"People are asking him to be clear. They don't want to see him in talks with the regime. They want to make it easier for people to get a visa, do something that could help people have better lives," said one protester.

  25. Election Day losses in Virginia and New Jersey have congressional Democrats focused like never before on jobs — their own.

While the White House and party leaders are urging calm, Democratic incumbents from red states and Republican-leaning districts are anything but; Tuesday's statehouse defeats have left them acutely aware that their votes on health care reform and other major Obama initiatives could be career-enders in 2010 or beyond.

“I should be nervous,” said Rep. Parker Griffith, a freshman Democrat from Huntsville, Ala.

Griffith said the Democratic rank and file is “very, very sensitive” to the fact that issues being pushed by party leaders “have the potential to cost some of our front-line members their seats.”

  35. Hawaii Update: DoH Confirms They Maintain A Birth Record For Obama Dated From August 1961.
Posted in Uncategorized on November 5, 2009 by naturalborncitizen
After various responses from the DoH giving unclear answers to UIPA requests which exclusively pertained to birth documents for Obama dating back to August 1961 – specifically documents which caused his birth to have been “Filed by Registrar August 8, 1961″ – I requested assistance from the OIP. Their interpretation of the DoH response was that of a denial of access. But the OIP also issued guidance as to how I could properly refine my request.

I took the OIP advice and issued a 6th UIPA request asking for the same documents and limiting any possible wiggle room.

And to this request I recently received a clear denial of access from the DoH by way of an official OIP form. I also received clear response forms from the DoH as to my previous UIPA requests.

The form I received is the same posted at the OIP web site. The box which says “denied in its entirety” was checked.

    SIGNIFICANCE

Prior on target UIPA requests by other researchers had more than one box checked. The denied box was checked and other boxes were checked which could also mean that the DoH did not maintain the record. That policy – at least for my UIPA requests – has now changed as the DoH only checked the “DENIED IN ITS ENTIRETY” box.

According to OIP administrative rules and guidance from OIP staff attorney Linden Joesting (originally provided to Terri K), the denial of access box can only be checked when the agency does in fact maintain the requested record.

I requested birth records for President Obama – maintained by the DoH – dated from August 1961. I was only concerned with documents which came into existence no later than August 10th 1961. The DoH has replied by denying access to those records.

This is a clear statutory admission that they possess records pertaining to President Obama’s birth which came into existence back in August 1961.

And this is the first clear admission that such birth records exist and are currently maintained by the DoH.

    NEXT PHASE

The next phase will be to appeal the DoH decision not to release these documents. The law in Hawaii supports such release since both Obama and the DoH have waived privacy protections to those portions of the records which have already been made public. According to precedent in Hawaii, such vital records should be released with any information which has not been previously made public redacted.

    Developing…

There are times when they would rather be watching TV or playing a computer game than hitting the books.’’

Then, to a chorus of oooohs from the crowd, he said that Malia, a sixth-grader at Sidwell Friends School in Washington, had come home with a 73 on her science test not long ago. He recounted how, a few years ago, she had come home with a grade in the 80s, believing that she had ‘’done pretty well.’’ He and his wife corrected her, telling her that their goal was “90 percent and up.’’

“So here’s the interesting thing: she started internalizing that,’’ the president said, adding that when she came home with a 73 on the science test ‘’she was depressed.’’ He asked her what happened, and she said the study guide didn’t match up with the test. So she vowed to study harder.

“So she came home yesterday, she got a 95,’’ Mr. Obama said. “But here’ the point: She said, ‘You know , I just like having knowledge.’’

The moral of the story, in the president’s view: “Don’t just expect teachers to set a high bar. You’ve got to set a high bar."

  57. Speaker Pelosi’s Government-Run Health Plan Will Require a Monthly Abortion Premium

Posted by GOP Leader Press Office on November 5th, 2009

Follow @GOPLeader on Twitter for updates.

Health care reform should not be used as an opportunity to use federal funds to pay for elective abortions. Health reform should be an opportunity to protect human life - not end it.

Unfortunately, Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page government takeover of health care does just that. On line 17, p. 110, section 222 under “Abortions for which Public Funding is Allowed” the Health and Human Services Secretary is given the authority to determine when abortion is allowed under the government-run plan. The Speaker’s plan also requires that at least one insurance plan offered in the Exchange covers abortions.

What is even more alarming is that a monthly abortion premium will be charged of all enrollees in the government-run plan. It’s right there on line 16, page 96, section 213, under “Insurance Rating Rules.” The premium will be paid into a U.S. Treasury account - and these federal funds will be used to pay for the abortion services.

Section 213 describes the process in which the Health Benefits Commissioner is to assess the monthly premiums that will be used to pay for elective abortions under the government-run plan. The Commissioner must charge at a minimum $1 per enrollee per month.

A majority of Americans believe that health care plans should not be mandated to provide elective abortion coverage, and a majority of Americans do not believe government health care plans should include abortion coverage. Currently, federal appropriations bills include language known as the Hyde Amendment that prohibits the use of federal funds to pay for elective abortions under the Medicare and Medicaid programs, while another provision, known as the Smith Amendment, prohibits federal funding of abortion under the federal employees’ health benefits plan.

Speaker Pelosi’s 2,032-page health care monstrosity is an affront to the American people and drastically moves away from current policy. The American people deserve more from their government than being forced to pay for abortion.

House Republicans are offering a common-sense, responsible solution that would reduce health care costs and expand access while protecting the dignity of all human life. The Republican plan, available at HealthCare.GOP.gov, would codify the Hyde Amendment and prohibit all authorized and appropriated federal funds from being used to pay for abortion. And under the Republican plan, any health plan that includes abortion coverage may not receive federal funds.

Page 94—Section 202(c) prohibits the sale of private individual health insurance policies, beginning in 2013, forcing individuals to purchase coverage through the federal government

Page 110—Section 222(e) requires the use of federal dollars to fund abortions through the government-run health plan—and, if the Hyde Amendment were ever not renewed, would require the plan to fund elective abortions

Page 111—Section 223 establishes a new board of federal bureaucrats (the “Health Benefits Advisory Committee”) to dictate the health plans that all individuals must purchase —and would likely require all Americans to subsidize and purchase plans that cover any abortion

Page 211—Section 321 establishes a new government-run health plan that, according to non-partisan actuaries at the Lewin Group, would cause as many as 114 million Americans to lose their existing coverage

Page 225—Section 330 permits—but does not require—Members of Congress to enroll in government-run health care

Page 255—Section 345 includes language requiring verification of income for individuals wishing to receive federal health care subsidies under the bill—while the bill includes a requirement for applicants to verify their citizenship, it does not include a similar requirement to verify applicants’ identity, thus encouraging identity fraud for undocumented immigrants and others wishing to receive taxpayer-subsidized health benefits

Page 297—Section 501 imposes a 2.5 percent tax on all individuals who do not purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health insurance— the tax would apply on individuals with incomes under $250,000, thus breaking a central promise of then-Senator Obama’s presidential campaign

Page 313—Section 512 imposes an 8 percent “tax on jobs” for firms that cannot afford to purchase “bureaucrat-approved” health coverage ; according to an analysis by Harvard Professor Kate Baicker, such a tax would place millions “at substantial risk of unemployment”—with minority workers losing their jobs at twice the rate of their white counterparts

Page 336—Section 551 imposes additional job-killing taxes, in the form of a half-trillion dollar “surcharge,” more than half of which will hit small businesses ; according to a model developed by President Obama’s senior economic advisor, such taxes could cost up to 5.5 million jobs

Page 520—Section 1161 cuts more than $150 billion from Medicare Advantage plans, potentially jeopardizing millions of seniors’ existing coverage

Page 733—Section 1401 establishes a new Center for Comparative Effectiveness Research; the bill includes no provisions preventing the government-run health plan from using such research to deny access to life-saving treatments on cost grounds, similar to Britain’s National Health Service, which denies patient treatments costing more than $35,000

Page 1174—Section 1802(b) includes provisions entitled “TAXES ON CERTAIN INSURANCE POLICIES” to fund comparative effectiveness research, breaking Speaker Pelosi’s promise that “We will not be taxing [health] benefits in any bill that passes the House,” and the President’s promise not to raise taxes on families with incomes under $250,000

  64. FORT HOOD, Texas – The U.S. Army says 12 people have been killed and 31 wounded in a shooting rampage on the Fort Hood Army base in Texas. Lt. Gen Bob Cone said at a news conference that one shooter has been killed and two suspects were apprehended on Thursday. He says they are all U.S. soldiers.

The shooting began around 1:30 p.m. Cone says that all the casualties took place at the base's Soldier Readiness Center where soldiers who are about to be deployed or who are returning undergo medical screening.

He says the primary shooter used two handguns in the attack.

  65. The suspected gunman was identified by ABC News as Major Malik Nadal Hasan.

  71. The GOP will screw up, they excel at it.

They are incapable of governing, as their record for 2000 - 2008 proves.

They govern as statists, because that's what they are.

They believe in using the police power of the state to interfere in your life to impose their religious values on people as much as the left uses the police power of the state to impose their zany shit on you.

The left does welfare to the underclass, the GOP does welfare to the C-level officer class.

With either party, you will end up with a federal boot crushing your neck harder than the day before.

With either party, your children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will be indentured servants to the Sauds, Chinese, Japanese and international bankers so everyone can get "free" healthcare, retirement, pills, etc.

Either party will defend the state's ability to run roughshod over you equally.

Until the GOP breaks with the Bible-thumpers and the corporatists, they will screw up.

Since the Bible thumpers and the corporatists fill their coffers the most, that will never happen.

  72. Major Hasan will disappear from the airwaves forthwith.

    This is a "terrible tragedy."

    "Isolated incident."

Definitely not a raid on a military installation by a dedicated warrior - of the Islamic variety.

  73. If there's any way possible to do it, this will be spun as a lone, disturbed gunman.

She went back into private practice, and the rest is, as they say, History.

Hasan, 39, is a licensed psychiatrist from Silver Spring, Md., according to CBS News investigative producer Len Tepper.

Retired Maj. Gen. Robert Scales told Fox News the massacre did not appear to be the act of a mentally ill or extremely stressed person.

"This was a deliberate act of execution," he said.

He said that the soldiers' vulnerability to psychological disorders increased with each deployment, and he equivocated when asked if they were being sent back into action before they were fully recovered."

  93. On Fox News, James Carafano said that this is beginning to look like a "lone wolf" operation. It could be that talk of accomplices was premature.

    ReplyDelete

"The shootings on the Texas military base stirred memories of other recent mass shootings in the United States, including 13 dead at a New York immigrant center in March, 10 killed during a gunman's rampage across Alabama in March and 32 killed in the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history at Virginia Tech in 2007."

    ReplyDelete
  98. The shooter was killed and two other suspects, who are also soldiers, have been apprehended, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone said.

Hasan allegedly opened fire and killed 11 people on the base before he was shot dead, bringing the total number of fatalities to 12.

The general said there were "eyewitness accounts of more than one shooter," and the others were tracked to an adjacent facility.

    updated 8:09 p.m. ET, Sun., July 1, 2007
LONDON - British security sources tell NBC News that two of the five suspects in custody in connection with three recent terror incidents in Scotland and London are medical doctors and one may have assembled the bombs. Authorities also said they believe that most, if not all, of the suspects come from Middle Eastern countries, including one from Iraq.

On Sunday, British police appealed for help in tracing movements of a green Jeep Cherokee in the days before it rammed an airport terminal in Glasgow on Saturday. The driver of the vehicle, who set himself on fire, remained in critical condition.

The attack came 36 hours after police found two Mercedes car bombs packed with fuel canisters, propane tanks and nails parked near a crowded nightclub in London’s teeming theatre district.

  119. Read carefully between the lines, folks. And, yes, he did have an unfavorable record.

"Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, said military officials had told her that Hasan was “pretty upset” about his deployment orders."

"The Associated Press, quoting military officials, said Hasan received a poor performance evaluation at Walter Reed. The officials would reveal no further details, citing the confidentiality of military records."

His performance was either "Satisfactory" or "Unsatisfactory". Obviously, his was the latter. This means the Army kept a body to fill a suit.

I should not be surprised if we do not wine, dine and waltz the terrorist who takes out an American city with a low yield atomic device. I won't be surprised when some airhead says, "Yeah, he was pretty upset".

Hey, boys and girls, there is a clue in there.

So why did the Army keep a guy so vociferously "hostile" to the Army's work environment? (Gee, Brain, why? Well, Pinky, it was a well disguised bid to take over the world, one heart and soul at a time.) Pinky and the Brain

  127. So,

    1) Major Hasan's performance at Reed did not meet standard. Instead, of being kept at Reed until his performance did rise to standard or he was discharged from service, he got orders to Hood.

    2) At Hood, the good Major, whose sympathies were utterly hostile to the vast majority of troops serving there, was tasked with working with returning PTSD sufferers...a stroke of genius, if ever there was one.

    3) In his spare time, the disgruntled Major carried on internet communications glorifiying the terrorist methods of our adversaries, the killers of US service members.

Someone is going to get an Army Commendation Medal for this piece of work, no doubt about it.

This says about all that needs be said about why, after eight long years, we are stuck tightly in ruts all over the globe. We may have also, inadvertantly, discovered the consumers of all that Afghan opium.

  140. Surrender: US offers Taliban 6 provinces -- Taliban says no
They rejected the offer; they'd prefer to have the whole thing, thank you.

"US Offers Taliban 6 Provinces for 8 Bases," by Aamir Latif for Islam Online, November 2 (thanks to all who sent this in):

ISLAMABAD - The emboldened Taliban movement in Afghanistan turned down an American offer of power-sharing in exchange for accepting the presence of foreign troops, Afghan government sources confirmed.
"US negotiators had offered the Taliban leadership through Mullah Wakil Ahmed Mutawakkil (former Taliban foreign minister) that if they accept the presence of NATO troops in Afghanistan, they would be given the governorship of six provinces in the south and northeast," a senior Afghan Foreign Ministry official told IslamOnline.net requesting anonymity for not being authorized to talk about the sensitive issue with the media.

He said the talks, brokered by Saudi Arabia and Turkey, continued for weeks at different locations including the Afghan capital Kabul.

Saudi Arabia, along with Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates, were the only states to recognize the Taliban regime which ruled Afghanistan from 1996 to 2001.

Turkish Prime Minister Reccap Erodgan has reportedly been active in brokering talks between the two sides.

His emissaries are in contact with Hizb-e-Islami (of former prime minister Gulbadin Hikmatyar) too because he is an important factor in northeastern Afghanistan."

A Taliban spokesman admitted indirect talks with the US.

"Yes, there were some indirect talks, but they did not work," Yousaf Ahmedi, the Taliban spokesman in southern Afghanistan, told IOL from an unknown location via satellite phone.

"There are some people who are conveying each others' (Taliban and US) messages. But there were no direct talks between us and America," he explained....

The Pentagon, the American military, the Army, those who run Fort Hood, are guilty, in their refusal to recognize the effect of Islam on the minds of men, in their wilfull ignorance of what is contained in Qur'an, Hadith, and Sira, in their continual pretend-belief that only the obvious "extremists" are a danger to non-Muslims, are guilty of criminal negligence. And the government of this country, and the governments of other non-Muslim countries who refuse to take Islam seriously, refuse to halt all Muslim immigration and work to diminish the number of Muslims present in our imperilled non-Muslim societies and states, are guilty of the same criminal negligence. Everyone in authority -- brief authority --in the Western world who presumes to protect and defend "the people," has a duty to learn about Islam. Not from John Esposito. Not from the sly propagandists, Muslim and non-Muslim collaborators alike, that is the True Believers and the hirelings, or the ideological sympathizers with Islam as "anti-Western." But, in the main, from two sources: the great Western authorities on Islam, such as Snouck Hurgronje, Joseph Schacht, Franz Rosenthal, Henri Lammens, Samuel Zwemer, St. Clair Tisdall, and a hundred others, and from the articulate apostates from Islam, such people as Ibn Warraq, Nonie Darwish, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wafa Sultan, Magdi Allam. Their testimonies have been published;t they are eager to help explain the Muslim mind, the mind of those brought up in societies suffused with Islam. But those who rule over us think they have no duty to learn from these sources. They prefer to listen to the smiling, affable, so-trustworthy Muslims on their staffs, or in the pay of the government. They are easily fooled. They are too lazy to do the necessary work that only they -- not their staffs, who prepare those simplify bullet-riddled Exective Summaries. Nothing but immediate, and detailed knowledge, of the texts and the tenets and the attitudes and the atmospherics of Islam, will do.
