McCain Should Now Choose a Woman to Win.

August 24, 2008
The Obama-Not Hillary Ticket
By Dick Morris Real Clear Politics

It doesn't take a political genius to realize that Barack Obama needed to nominate a woman for vice president. Obama's key
problem is that there is no gender gap. In the most recent Zogby poll, he runs only 2 points better among women than among men. A Democrat should be running 10 to 15 points better among women.

If Obama is to have a hope of winning, he needs to improve his performance among female voters. The Fox News poll indicates that only about half of those who backed Hillary Clinton in the primaries are voting for Obama and that fully one in five is now planning to back McCain. Attractive to women voters because of his maverick positions on issues and his willingness to defy the Republican orthodoxy, McCain is garnering votes from women who should be part of Obama's core constituency.

So why didn't Obama name a woman? He couldn't nominate Hillary because she came with such baggage that he'd be spending his entire campaign swatting away charges directed at the Clintons. It would be priceless to see Obama trying to justify Bill's refusal to publish the names of the donors to his library or to explain what Bill is doing in Dubai and Kazakhstan.

But what about Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius? While not a national figure, she is attractive and articulate, and would have made a fine candidate. But Obama was terrified that the Clintons would wreck vengeance if he named a woman other than Hillary. But it was all a bluff.

Hillary's delegates would have celebrated the selection of a woman and would not have held it against Obama that it was someone other than Hillary. Hillary, for her part, would have had to grit her teeth and support Sebelius or risk alienating her core constituency. But Obama didn't dare do what he needed to do. He wimped out.

The fact that Barack Obama named Joe Biden as his vice presidential candidate will have relatively little impact on the strategic framework of the race. Biden was the best of the names on Obama's short list. His experience in foreign affairs, his tough advocacy of the Democratic agenda and his skill at handling himself will all help Obama's campaign, but not decisively. The other options were worse. Tim Kaine, governor of Virginia, had as little experience as Obama. Evan Bayh, senator from Indiana, is way too soft spoken and mild for a rough and tumble campaign.

But the most important thing is that Obama did not choose a woman. He needed one. With Hillary's evident availability for the nomination, his failure to name her or some other woman stands out starkly to women voters. It doesn't matter to them that he chose Biden over Bayh or Kaine. What matters is that he did not choose Hillary or another woman.

Now, John McCain can take advantage of Obama's blunder by coming back with a woman nominee for president. Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison would be an excellent choice. She's been around for decades and is not going to start making mistakes now. Her nomination would be a signal to American women that McCain takes their aspirations seriously, even if Obama does not. Hutchison is not charismatic. But her circumstances would be if she were nominated. The prospect of a woman vice president would electrify women throughout the nation.

I have previously written about the advantages of Joe Lieberman for vice president. His nomination would send a signal of bipartisanship that would be notable and would hasten Democratic defections. But conservatives would be horrified by the choice of Lieberman. And Obama's failure to nominate a woman is such a glaring misstep that McCain should pounce and take advantage of it.

The ticket will nominally be Obama-Biden. But, to millions of American women it will be Obama and not Hillary.

When challenged about his intelligence by a voter in Iowa in 1988, Mr Biden responded that "I have a much higher IQ than you do, I suspect," before saying that he had three degrees (he had one) and that he "ended up in the top half"of his Law School class (he was 76th out of 85), where he had been on a "full scholarship" (it was a half scholarship).

  2. Mr Biden has received large campaign contributions from lobbyists - a practice Mr Obama rejects - and one of his sons is a lobbyist. He also has a tendency to make slightly off-colour remarks about race and gender.
On Saturday, he introduced his wife Jill by saying she was "drop dead gorgeous" but "she also has her doctorate degree, which is a problem..but all kidding aside".
Mr Biden's Iraq record will also be scrutinised. He voted against the 1991 Gulf War but for the 2003 Iraq invasion. When voting in favour of funding troops in Iraq, he berated Mr Obama for opposing the measure.
Just last week, Mr Biden blocked a proposed nuclear co-operation deal between the US and Russia.

  3. The ultimate ticket:

    McCain/Clinton

Seriously, that's a sound idea (picking a woman) but I still think if he can steal Michigan away from Obama and eke out Ohio he can win it. I think it comes down to Ohio. Romney is the path to that outcome.

    Michigan - Obama +4.0
    Ohio - McCain +1.0

  5. Political analyst Brian McGee says the vote is just a formal part of the convention because we already know Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden are the ticket. The convention is really just a time for the party to show off their nominee.

"They're trying to rally the faithful. Trying to get those true partisans to work very hard for the campaign.

They're trying to sway voters who are out there looking at candidates from both of the major parties and so that is what the convention is designed to do, persuade voters," McGee said.

But Hunter's firm, Oldaker, Biden & Belair, led by William Oldaker, a former Biden campaign treasurer, and another firm that Hunter has worked for, the National Group, have sought congressional appropriations for a wide variety of clients, including colleges and universities in Delaware and Pennsylvania.

Calls to Oldaker, Biden & Belair and to the National Group weren't returned.

The Obama-Biden campaign spokesman, David Wade, said that Hunter Biden "has never lobbied Sen. Biden's office or committees, period."

Powerline has a number of good posts about Not-so-Joltin’ Joe Biden.

My favorite bit is this clip from a New Republic profile of Biden in October 2001, conveying a meeting of Biden and staff shortly after 9/11.

Biden launches into a stream-of-consciousness monologue about what his [Senate Foreign Relations] committee should be doing, before he finally admits the obvious: “I’m groping here.” Then he hits on an idea: America needs to show the Arab world that we’re not bent on its destruction. “Seems to me this would be a good time to send, no strings attached, a check for $200 million to Iran,” Biden declares. He surveys the table with raised eyebrows, a How do ya like that? look on his face.

These may be the two biggest idiots ever to (dis)grace a major party ticket.

  23. They're Paying Attention Now

The Rick Warren debate mattered. Why? It took place at exactly the moment America was starting to pay attention. This is what it looked like by the end of the night: Mr. McCain, normal. Mr. Obama, not normal. You've seen this discussed elsewhere. Mr. McCain was direct and clear, Mr. Obama both more careful and more scattered. But on abortion in particular, Mr. McCain seemed old-time conservative, which is something we all understand, whether we like such a stance or not, and Mr. Obama seemed either radical or dodgy. He is "in favor . . . of limits" on late-term abortions, though some would consider those limits "inadequate." (In the past week much legal parsing on emanations of penumbras as to the viability of Roe v. Wade followed.)

As I watched I thought: How about "Let the baby live"? Don't parse it. Just "Let the baby live."

As to the question when human life begins, the answer to which is above Mr. Obama's pay grade, oh, let's go on a little tear. You know why they call it birth control? Because it's meant to stop a birth from happening nine months later. We know when life begins. Everyone who ever bought a pack of condoms knows when life begins.

To put it another way, with conception something begins. What do you think it is? A car? A 1948 Buick?

    - Exclusive Obama's lost law review article -
His article acknowledged a public interest in the health of the fetus, but also seemed to demonstrate his continuing commitment to abortion rights, and suggested that the government may have more important concerns than "ensuring that any particular fetus is born."
