A day at the beach

Man dies when bluff collapses at San Diego beach

Thu Aug 21, 1:28 AM ET

A tourist from Nevada was killed Wednesday when a stretch of oceanside bluff at the Torrey Pines State Beach collapses, authorities said.

The 57-year-old, whose identity was not released, was at the beach with his brother and nephew when rocks the size of basketballs came down, officials said.

"He was just spending a day at the beach with his family," said Maurice Luque, spokesman for the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. "He'd gone to the foot of the cliff to take off his shoes, and a small section of the bluffs just gave way and came down."

The section of collapsed cliff — about 30 feet wide — was several hundred feet below the Torrey Pines Golf Course, which hosted the U.S. Open in June.

The beach and parts of the bluff surrounding the collapse were closed.

  2. Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Heir Apparent of the GOP?

    Originally published 04:26 p.m., August 20, 2008, updated 08:00 p.m., August 20, 2008

    UPDATED:

Officials with John McCain's campaign made a series of conference calls Monday and Tuesday with supporters nationwide to say that Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman may be named as the Arizona senator's vice presidential running mate, immediately sparking a frenzied effort by some state Republican officials to come up with a strategy to head off such a move, The Washington Times has learned.

One of the concerned state GOP officials told The Washington Times that he talked with two "high-level" campaign officials who said "Lieberman is a very real possibility."

Mr. Lieberman is a former Democrat who was Al Gore's running mate in 2000. Now, he is an independent who caucuses with the Democrats in the Senate.

Mr. Lieberman, who is visiting the war-torn Republic of Georgia this week with Sen. Lindsey Graham, South Carolina Republican and McCain loyalist, will address the Republican National Convention in St. Paul on Sept. 1.

A McCain political associate said that did not rule out Mr. McCain naming Mr. Lieberman as his running mate. A campaign official confirmed privately that Mr. Lieberman is still a preferred choice for the vice presidential job and could be moved to the traditional third day speaking slot that running mate's traditionally get. The McCain campaign prohibits anyone in its camp from talking with the press about a potential vice presidential candidate.

  3. You guys can all get behind Joe Lieberman, he's a real Republican.

    Doesn't even carry the card.

He's not even a Republican in name only, but a Senate Democrat.

The GOP candidate in 2012, or the Democratic candidate, who's to know, now, what the future portends.

  4. We're all a heartbeat away from eternity.

Reminds me of when I was visiting my aunt,98, during her last weeks in the rest home, and the pastor dropped in.

Doctor X, a member of our church, a fairly young man, whole life ahead of him, great credit to the community, with a couple of sons, had gone out snowmobiling on a bright, cold, clear winter's day, in the mountains near here. No wind, pretty cold. He stopped for a minute, got off the snowmobile, and an old brittle tree fell on him, killing him right there.

How to explain such things I don't really know. My aunt died at 98 1/2, he died in his thirties, in the same year.

  5. The evangelicals, all enthused by the showing at Saddlebreak Church, will be ticked off if it's Lieberman. I don't see what added strength he brings to the ticket. Romney might bring Michigan.

Reporters have been comparing the two major vice presidential nominees and noticing their similarities. Dick Cheney and Joe Lieberman are both experienced, sober, dignified, free of Clintonian sex appeal. But the media coverage is oh so different. Dick Cheney is a conservative, and that's bad. Joe Lieberman is a conservative, and that's good.

... As a congressman, Dick Cheney's American Conservative Union rating was a 90. That, according to the media glossary, makes him "hard right," or "far right" or "surprisingly out of the mainstream."

As a senator, Joe Lieberman's American Conservative Union rating was almost the opposite: 19 percent. In the media's eyes this makes him a "moderate," a "centrist," and often even a "conservative" Democrat. A Time website headline called him "Middle-of-the-Road Joe." If a 19-percent conservative rating is the middle of the road, there's a really fat right lane on our political highway.

Look at the liberal Americans for Democratic Action ratings system. Lieberman earned a lifetime "Liberal Quotient" of 77, six points more liberal than Dick Gephardt. Question: Lieberman's a "conservative," does that make Gephardt "far right?" In 1999, Lieberman was assessed 95 percent from ADA, making him one of the Senate's eight most liberal Senators. That year he also received a fat zero in the ACU conservative ratings.

So how in blazes does Lieberman's lifetime conservative rating of 19 percent make him a "conservative Democrat?" A reading of the last few years of ideological ratings leads one to conclude that, in fact, there are no conservative Democrats in the Senate. ...

Take a look at some issues. Cheney supports the pro-life position, and because of that Bryant Gumbel reports, "Cheney's politics are of the hard-right variety. He's opposed to abortion and favors both capital punishment and school prayer."
Conversely, Lieberman is 100-percent pro-abortion -- pro-partial birth, pro-federal funding, the works. But Gumbel's colleague Steve Kroft announced from the anchor chair that "Lieberman is noted for his moderate voting record and high moral standards." If you're Forrest Sawyer on MSNBC, that voting record makes Lieberman "socially conservative."

If you are Forrest Sawyer or
    John "Maverick" McCain.

  9. “Lieberman’s a great pick for McCain if he doesn’t want to be president,” said Tony Perkins, a Christian conservative leader who is the president of the Family Research Council.

Fellow social conservative leader Richard Land, the former director of the Southern Baptist Convention, called a possible Lieberman vice presidential pick "a catastrophe.”

“This would be the kind of thing that could destroy McCain’s campaign for the presidency,” added Don Devine, the vice chairman of the American Conservative Union. “McCain might like to do this in some deep recesses of his heart, but I can’t believe at the end of the day he would do it — and if he did, it would be disastrous. Lieberman is just too far out of any idea of conservatism. It’s just crazy idea.”

“Lieberman is an impossible vice presidential choice,” said Grover Norquist, a conservative anti-tax activist. “You don’t average out a guy who votes hard left on economic matters because he has enthusiasm for occupying Mesopotamia.”

Obama's Psychological Blackmail Has Been Done Before in Brazil, with Success

    Written by Olavo de Carvalho

    Wednesday, 20 August 2008 17:50

Saint Barack of Assisi from Irony Shmirony site Besides listening to the national anthem with his hands over his genitals instead of over his heart, Barack Hussein Obama has adulterated the presidential seal so as to make it into one of his campaign logos, declared that the American flag is "a symbol of oppression," and, as a finishing stroke, removed the stars and stripes from the tail of his campaign jet, replacing them with the "O" that stands for. . . himself. More than plain and simple contempt, this attitude denotes a conscious effort at destroying the national symbols. This effort, in its turn, does not require symbolic interpretation: its meaning is self-evident.

It gives electoral expression to the cultural war that has been waged against the United States, from within and from abroad, ever since the sixties: the point is to erect, upon the rubble of patriotism and sovereignty, a new system of loyalties, based on the alliance between every anti-American, anti-Western, and anti-Christian hatred and the billionaire interests engrossed in the implementation of the world government.

The clearest token of this alliance are the candidate's sources of funding: radical and pro-terrorist groups, on the one side, and the globalist megafortunes plus the mainstream media in full, on the other. Hence the vigor of his campaign, which has four times as much money as his opponent's and - without any exaggeration - gets twenty or thirty times as much media coverage.

With this backup, he presumes not only to defy every convention but also to trample on the most elementary legal requirements: after withholding for months his birth certificate, he at last produced a manifestly spurious one (see http://web.israelinsider.com/Articles/Politics/12993.htm). The original document, which is still missing, is necessary to clear up an essential question: Is Obama an American citizen, or is he an alien and therefore ineligible?

The concealment and the subsequent fraud speak in favor of the latter hypothesis, but the steadfast enthusiasm of Obamaniacs, contrasting with their absolute lack of interest in clarifying this question, shows that they would rather demolish the American electoral system at one blow than allow Republicans to stay in power: the new system of loyalties is already in force, placing over national integrity the partisan ambitions of the Left.

With the same self-confident insolence, Obama's government plans run flagrantly counter to the will of the majority, without the candidate having to fear the loss of even a single vote. The nation wants gas prices down; Obama promises to send them up, by maintaining the ban on new oil drilling. America wants to see illegal immigrants depart; Obama promises not only to grant them amnesty but also to give them taxpayer-funded health care.

The nation wants fewer taxes; Obama promises to create a few more. If millions of American citizens who think and want the opposite of what Obama does have sworn to vote for Obama for president, it is not on account of what he promises, but in spite of his promising them even hell itself. The attraction of the hypnotic image is stronger than the cost-benefit analysis.

Obama's campaign is a work of precision psychological engineering, planned not to win over voters through rational persuasion, but to weaken, shock, and stupefy them to the point of making them accept every loss, every humiliation, every defeat, just in order not to contradict the assumed moral obligation to elect him, it being of little importance whether he actually is an enemy in disguise.

Here is what Obama is demanding - and obtaining - from voters: that they sacrifice everything to a fetish, that they do so to some extent consciously, sharing therefore the blame for the operation and becoming in advance unable to fight against it once it has been accomplished.

We have already seen this operation be carried out in Brazil, on the basis of the stereotypical image of the "worker president," Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, against whose crimes and perfidies no one can raise an audible voice anymore, for everyone, dragged by the psychological blackmail, became an accomplice somehow in the rite of sacrifice before the altar of the idol.
