Saudis to Ariel Sharon and George Bush. Good Fences Make Good Neighbors.

Too bad Ariel Sharon is in a coma. He would have had to smile as the Saudis, who had much to say about Sharon's approach to fence building, have made the decision to, a, well, er, -build a fence.

The thing is Sharon was ferociously criticized as much from the right as from the left about his "apartheid" approach, but it worked.

Well times change and the Saudis, ever the pragmatists, have concluded that it is time to get serious about plan "B" regarding Iraq and its affect on Saudi security. It seems that the Saudi Royals have determined that "staying the course" may have ran the course.

(I put a challenge to the evil genius of some of the EB crowd to suggest a name for the fence.)

Saudis plan Iraq security fence
By Heba Saleh

BBC News, Cairo

"Saudi Arabia will press ahead with the construction of a security fence to seal off the border with Iraq, the interior minister has said.
Prince Nayef bin Abdulaziz said it would prevent the entry of Islamic militants and illegal immigrants.

The 900-km (560 mile) fence is part of the larger electronic shield which the kingdom plans to build to secure its northern, western and southern borders.

The $12bn project will use devices such as remote sensors and thermal cameras.

A border fence separating us from Iraq has become essential to protect security...I expect work will begin on the border fence next year
Prince Nayef

The Saudis want to control their vast desert borders and seal off Iraq, ensuring that the chaos there does not spill over into the kingdom.

The Saudi interior minister said the war in Iraq was affecting all its neighbours and that a border fence had become essential for the security of the kingdom.

Describing Iraq as the main base for terrorism in the region, Prince Nayef said construction of the fence would start next year and take up to six years.

As the world's largest oil producer and the country targeted by al-Qaeda, Saudi Arabia is acutely aware of the threat posed by the war in Iraq.

The Saudi authorities fear there could be dire consequences for the stability of the kingdom if Iraq disintegrates.

They see the security fence as a means of stopping al-Qaeda fighters as well as drug dealers, weapon smugglers and potentially large numbers of Iraqi refugees."

  1. VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - A senior Vatican cardinal on Tuesday condemned the building of walls between countries to keep out immigrants ...

So there, in an instant I thought, the Pope was taking a chance, telling Wahabists that they were condemned, but the I read

and said Washington's plan to build a fence on the U.S.-Mexican border was part of an "inhuman program".

So now I know what is "right" for the Sauds to do, open their borders to Sunni refugees from Iraq.
It's only right that the Sauds take in their bretheren.
Integrate them into their society, like the Palistinians in Lebanon.

Arab Unity and Mohammedan Brotherhood demand it.

  2. As does the Vicar of Christ, in Rome, or at least his spokesman, the "Cardinal".

Think those Mohammedans will listen to the head priest of the Catlicks?

We can be sure that the Democratic Congress will get Religion and avoid further condemnation, Big Teddy K needs salvation from the Pope, not condemnation.

  3. What Fence?

There won't be no stinking fence!!!

... El Pope' obviously thinks Mexico is a doing a surperb job beating the illegals coming across its southern border, when compared to America. Sometimes I think the Catholic Church has lost its stinking mind!

Pope: "Hey, God, didn't you know your heavenly wall was part of an 'inhuman program'?"

    God: "Whatchu talkin' bout, Benny?"

Pope: "Well, see, it says right here in Revelations 21:[10] And he carried me away in the spirit to a great and high mountain, and shewed me that great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God...and he measured the wall thereof, an hundred and forty and four cubits."

God: "Look, that's just a landscaping choice."

Pope: "Bolshevik! Did not Your Son say in Luke 13:28, "There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when ye shall see Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, and all the prophets, in the kingdom of God, and you yourselves thrust out." ?

  5. well guys, I have to say it publically. Its the wimple. No doubt about it. She just wouldn't be nearly as attractive without it.

    Where was I?

    Oh yeah.

First Irony, given that SA is a prime exporter of Islamic inspired terror I think its just delicious that they want to wall themselves off from the chaos they inspired. As others have pointed out, the Saudis, not being white men, feel no burden at all.

Next, I'd enjoy reading the thoughts of the commenters here relative to a guerilla warfare campaign within Iran. I think it would make great sense because it would accomplish two things: it would distract the Mullahs and it would weaken their grip on the population.

But I know far less about this than the enlighted folks here. So what say you?

  6. skipsailing,

re: they want to wall themselves off from the chaos they inspired.

One small quibble for our Saudi friends - "they are inspiring"

    ;-)

  7. Allen, news photography should be treated with scepticism. An example is audience disapproval of a recent Broadway performance.

That picture is headed for a small, nondescript corner of the Louvre.

Yeah, great idea, it's our turn to be the crusading insurgents, IT'S OUR TURN TO BE THE CHRISTIAN "MILITANTS"!"

    the hashemites...

    no fooling...

give the palestinians (excuse me while i vomit) jordan and the EAST bank... of the original arab "palestine" (excuse me while i vomit)

    Yes oil is the issue.

as for the Pope, please return all stolen looted temple objects, the 12,000,000 torahs, talmuds, menorahs & other items that make up the single largest collection of historic JEWISH artifacts.

then lecture the USA about fences.

  11. WIO or Allen,

WIO's last post spurred a question I have. What does Jewish tradition say happened to the Ark of the Covenant?

  12. There is reason, allen, why the Mexican countryside is littered with the shells of burnt out Catholic churchs, ruins for almost 90 years, now.

  13. Christian militants unite!

We could use the Black Madonna of Częstochowa as our Icon.

Sounds like a plan. When do we leave?

You can also "feel" free to add your own.
