Accountability

All over the world, people are on the move for opportunity and prosperity.

From the AP article, Fears of 'Two-Speed Europe' Still Exist
By WILLIAM J. KOLE, Associated Press Writer

BRATISLAVA, Slovakia - Miroslav Fasik is an EU citizen by chance and a chauffeur by choice, and he's frustrated at being stuck in Europe's slow lane. After emigrating from Serbia a decade ago, Fasik, 40, had high hopes of prosperity and opportunity when his adopted Slovakia joined the European Union. Two and a half years later, he feels duped.

"I'm still a second-class citizen," he said. "I don't have euros in my pockets. I don't have the right to move my business to Germany or get a job in Austria. This is not the Europe I had in mind."

What struck me about this paragraph was the fact that Miroslav Fasik had immigrated from Serbia into Slovakia for a better life and then had the expectation of moving to "Old Europe" in search of greater monetary rewards. I wonder if he has a love of country. Does he still think of Serbia as his home or did he truly adopt Slovakia? Where do his loyalties lie? How does he honor his heritage?

The old South of my youth was a two race, Christian society of segregated black and white cultures. Prayers were freely and frequently offered at all public events. Old Glory was proudly raised and saluted, and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited at the start of each school day where young men were taught the virtues of chivalry, Duty, Honor and Country. Men, honoring their heritage, stood as the old anthem, Dixie, was played before high school football games. In this world there were no Arabs, no Asians, no Hispanics, no Indians, and no eskimos. It was a homogenous, apartheid society.

Life is different now. Things are changing.

The old, Jim Crow south of my early youth had long since disappeared as the diversity decades of the 1980's and 1990's brought people from all over the world. Living in a university town, I had already seen the influx of Asians and Indians. I had learned that the Patels were the Smiths of the subcontinent and although I was aware of the Mexican workforce in the boom-or-bust oil towns of Texas, no such groups had yet been found in southeastern demographics. A few years ago, maybe ten or more, during a Sunday drive through rural south Georgia I noticed something that I had never seen before; gathered in the shade of ancient oaks at rural southern cross roads were groups of 10 or 20 Hispanic men socialising on their day of rest. To a southerner old enough to have one foot in old Dixie and the other in the new south, this was a first sighting.

Since that first sighting, the Hispanic population in the U.S. has now grown to an estimated 11 to 15 million. The true number is unknown. It has been estimated that 4,000 people per night move north across the southern border into the United States but because we have little control of the southern border, the true number is unknown.

Its the Security, stupid

In the days after September 11, 2001 the Federal Government assured it's citizens that it was doing all that it could to prevent further attacks. In addition to learning that all but one of the 9/11 highjackers were Saudis, we also learned that the Saudis had been given preferential immigration treatment. We learned that a special diversity lottery was allowing thousands of middle-easterners into the country with little oversight or screening. The Government assured us that it was making all efforts to prevent more "evil-doers" from entering the country. Evidence of the "redoubled efforts" resulted in a furor which erupted when US Immigrations officials insisted on finger-printing and photographing international travelers entering the US. Congress passed legislation authorizing 10,000 new border agents but then a year later, we learned that only a few hundred new agents had been hired. A bewildered public wondered why the President had not authorized the funding needed to implement the expanded border security forces. Realizing that something was amiss, the Minute Men formed and began patrolling the border. The President slandered them as a vigilante group but the public demanded action. Congress, hearing the hue and cry from the hustings, set out to resolve the problem and it soon became obvious to all why only lip service had been paid to the problems of uncontrolled immigration across the southern border. To do so, would thwart the ongoing efforts of elitist one Worlders seeking to eradicate borders and globalists seeking a North American Union. In addition, big business has become addicted to the cheap and consequence free illegal labor and the Government of Mexico is heavily dependant on it's expat remittances. These groups have been lobbying at cross purposes with the public's desire for control of the borders followed by immigration reform.

Accountability

Like the 4,000 people moving in the night, other groups have been quietly working in the shadows to advance their special interest agendas. Day by day, little by little, the veil has been lifted and the agendas are being exposed. The "undocumented population" has ballooned since the days of Ronald Reagan when we were assured that an amnesty would not result in increased illegal immigration. Many point out that the great majority of illegals are good people; desperate people seeking honest work and better lives.

This is not about a zenophobic American public. Americans are better than that (possibly to a fault). This has become an issue of the accountability of the Federal Government to an American public. An American public which increasingly feels that it has been deceived by too many and for too long. Congress will not be allowed to implement an amnesty system before the borders are controlled. Congress and the President will be held accountable for the security they have promised but miserably failed to deliver.

  1. Whit,
As honest an appraisal of what is happening in this country as I have seen or heard. Congratulations on a great piece.

If we do not stop the North American Union and the elitist from bastardizing this country there will be a civil war.
There are enough good old boys and girls to stop this by force of arms if necessary.
To President Bush and the Congressional leadership this is a warning. Stop and rethink your goals or you will be handling dynamite right here in America.
You are failing your Constitutional duty and it is the citizenry's right to perforce change if that continues.
The enumerations in the Declaration of Independence have not withered nor will sub rosa tyranny be allowed.

  5. TigerHawk examines “More on the GOP malaise” by introducing a lengthy lede by Instapundit; wherein, at the very end, a correspondent “gets it”:

“Is it a tantrum to hold an intervention for a good friend who has become lost to himself through drink or drugs? To confront a good friend who seems to have lost his principles? To have lost his way?"

Indeed, Republican leadership has no principles, save for winning elections. The base is tired of being forced to choose the lesser of evils.

  6. DR..can you here me now?

I don't know if Rufus is mad or just very passionate as we get closer to a tight election.
I kinda followed ya'll colleque and he seems a good deal more animated about the prospects of a Democratic anything, while if I read you correctly you're being more circumspect about the system in general.
I do believe we are in one of those tight spots in history but I've got one little ole vote and each year it seems to do less and less for me. I have no answers, just keep vot'n til the insurrrection builds to a flash point. And I do think it could happen.

  7. Allen,
I don't think anyone in DC has a principled position that money could not alter.
Once you've gone through the political system, local-state-federal you're number one a "party person" cause they got you there.
Then you get onto a committee and do the appropriate head nodding while lobbyists write laws for you to put in the hopper. I don't see a principled soul anywhere in DC...much to much a zero sum game now..no center.

  8. Over at the BC under Fly the unfriendly skies, there is the assumption that, because President Clinton took an obsessively legalistic tack to CIA rendititons, Senator Clinton will be hurt thereby. Instantly, the writer follows this bit of folk wisdom with the observation, “These legal restrictions were imposed during the Clinton era but never lifted by President Bush.”

Let me get this straight: former president Clinton introduced a moronic policy for dealing with the transport of terrorists; one subsequently continued by President Bush, and all this will hurt Mrs. Clinton in 2008. Call me slow, but how will this longstanding bi-partisan policy hurt Hillary?

And the Republicans wonder why they are having problems in the polls. Repeat after me, “These legal restrictions were imposed during the Clinton era but never lifted by President Bush.” Why, goodness me, that would make them Mr. Bush’s policies.

And…and…OK, how about this: While 61% of the American public is conservative, neither political party is.

  11. Ace draws me up short, making me reconsider Dr. Rice’s belief that the world stands behind the US in one very real sense. Link

Navy 'too weak' for big role in Korea blockade:

“[S]enior Royal Navy officers last night cast serious doubt over Britain's ability to make a significant naval contribution to the proposed UN force, claiming that drastic cuts in government spending on the navy over the past decade had severely reduced their ability to participate in major foreign operations.”

“Defence experts predicted that the most the Royal Navy could contribute was a single frigate, a Royal Fleet auxiliary support vessel and a Trafalgar class hunter killer submarine.”

“As a result of government cutbacks any British ships deployed to the South China Sea to enforce the UN resolution would depend on the American or French navies to provide "beyond visual range" air defence with their aircraft carriers.”

“The Navy has been cut by almost a third since Labour came into power…”

Hey, Mr. Bush’s 150 ship US Navy is sounding better all the time. Cut! Cut! Cut! While the world stands behind us in abject terror.
