COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

CBS Airs NSA Propaganda Informercial Masquerading As 'Hard Hitting' 60 Minutes Journalism By Reporter With Massive Conflict Of Interest

from the journalism! dept

Last night I started seeing a bunch of folks on Twitter absolutely trashing 60 Minutes. We had mentioned last week that 60 Minutes would be doing something about the NSA, including the revelation that some NSA officials favored granting Snowden asylum, and that Keith Alexander ridiculously stated that people should be held accountable for their actions -- without recognizing the irony of that statement when pointed at himself. What we didn't realize was that the episode of 60 Minutes would be a complete propaganda infomercial for the NSA. Among the many, many, many issues with the program:
  • The reporting was conducted by John Miller, a former intelligence community official (who worked for the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, which oversees the NSA) in a spokesperson role and a variety of historical roles in the intelligence community. While he does "disclose" the ODNI role upfront (but not the others), he left out that he's about to be hired in an intelligence role for the NYPD, a deal that has been described as "a 99.44 percent done deal." Also, in the past, when he also worked for the NYPD, he had a bit of a problem with telling the truth. Miller is, clearly, an intelligence industry spokesperson at heart, pretending to be a journalist here.
  • There was not a single hard hitting question asked throughout. It was all softballs. Seriously. Many of the setup questions were the same bogus strawmen we've seen the NSA focus on in the past -- concerning things like "is the NSA listening to everyone's calls." But that isn't what people are actually concerned about. At no point did they appear to even attempt to ask followup questions when the NSA people made clearly misleading statements, such as those concerning the surveillance of "US persons."
  • Not a single critic of the NSA was shown during the entire episode. Seriously. Not a single claim by the NSA was refuted or pushed back on. At all. Basically, Miller served up softballs, the NSA hit 'em back, and the "investigative journalists" at 60 Minutes said, "Wow, isn't that amazing!"
  • They admit that they did this piece because the NSA "invited them in." In other words, this was purely a propaganda piece from the very outset. The most hysterical thing to watch is the "overtime" bit that they have on the website in which they explain how 60 Minutes got to do this story on the NSA, which reveals that basically the NSA asked them to do this puff piece and then controlled every second of the process. There are even a few outtakes where the NSA "handlers" cut off parts of interviews to tell people what to say.
  • Miller claims he spoke to NSA critics and asked them what they would ask, but that's not reflected in the questioning at all. He then defends the piece saying that his goal was to let the NSA explain its side of the story, which he argues wasn't getting enough attention. Seriously. Because this is really the side of the story that has been mined only in the most superficial ways. We’ve heard plenty from the critics. We’ve heard a lot from Edward Snowden. Where there’s been a distinctive shortage is, putting the NSA to the test and saying not just ‘We called for comment today’ but to get into the conversation and say that sounds a lot like spying on Americans, and then say, ‘Well, explain that.’”
Try not to laugh at that. He even claims that he didn't want it to be a puff piece -- which is exactly what it was.
  • The one big "revelation" in the piece involves NSA people implying, but never actually saying, how they stopped some sort of plot to turn everyone's computers into bricks by infecting the BIOS. But, as lots of people who actually understand this stuff are noting, that segment was pure gibberish: There are no technical details. Yes, they talk about "BIOS", but it's redundant, unrelated to their primary claim. Any virus/malware can destroy the BIOS, making a computer unbootable, "bricking" it. There's no special detail here. All they are doing is repeating what Wikipedia says about BIOS, acting as techie talk layered onto the discussion to make it believable, much like how Star Trek episodes talk about warp cores and Jeffries Tubes.
  • Stripped of techie talk, this passage simply says "The NSA foiled a major plot, trust us." But of course, there is no reason we should trust them. It's like how the number of terrorist plots foiled by telephone eavesdropping started at 50 then was reduced to 12 then to 2 and then to 0, as the NSA was forced to justify their claims under oath instead of in front of news cameras. The NSA has proven itself an unreliable source for such information -- we can only trust them if they come out with more details -- under oath.
  • Moreover, they don't even say what they imply. It's all weasel-words. Nowhere in the above passage does a person from the NSA say "we foiled a major cyber terror plot". Instead, it's something you piece together by the name "BIOS plot", cataclysmic attacks on our economy (from the previous segment), and phrases like "would it have worked".
  • Part of the piece, bizarrely, focused on smearing Ed Snowden based on a completely out of context statement about how he would work at home with a sheet over his head to keep work secret. Given the realities of what the NSA is doing, and what Snowden was up to, that doesn't sound so strange. Yet, Miller (not the NSA), made it out like Snowden was a wack job for this: John Miller: At home, they discovered Snowden had some strange habits.
  • Rick Ledgett: He would work on the computer with a hood that covered the computer screen and covered his head and shoulders, so that he could work and his girlfriend couldnt see what he was doing.
  • John Miller: Thats pretty strange, sitting at your computer kind of covered by a sheet over your head and the screen?
  • Rick Ledgett: Agreed.
There was more, but it's more of the same. You have the producers of the episode oohing and ahhing about how the NSA's headquarters looked like something out of Star Trek, and how they had to fight hard to get the NSA to open a door for the NSA's "black chamber" -- showing a couple of cubicles.

Coming so soon on the heels after 60 Minutes totally bungled a report on Benghazi, you would think that the once respected news program might try a little harder not to post something so obviously ridiculous. But, apparently not. While many have suggested that the NSA communications people should get a raise for pulling off such pure propaganda, some are pointing out that the whole thing was so obviously a bogus puff piece that no one's buying it. Anthony DeRosa has put together a series of tweets about the episode and hasn't yet been able to find a single person who reacted positively to it. Not a single one.

It's no secret that the NSA isn't very good at PR but, in this case, not only may they have harmed their case, they helped CBS News shoot themselves in the foot, yet again, over whatever shreds of journalistic credibility they may have had.

  3. Veterans are far more likely to die of suicide and in accidents — a trend largely unstudied until recently.

The 25-year-old Marine veteran drank heavily and drove fast — often at the same time. Tyree had walked away from two serious accidents that demolished his cars.
    advertisement

On a foggy November morning in 2011, he slammed his pickup truck into a power pole, became tangled in a power line and was electrocuted.

"He was so reckless at times," said his father, Mark Sr. "He had no fear whatsoever."

Tyree belonged to a generation of young veterans whose return to civilian life has been marked by an unusually high death rate, primarily boosted by accidents and suicides.

Mark Tyree, a Marine Corps veteran who did a tour in Iraq, is buried in the Northern California Veterans Cemetery. More photos

The death rate for California veterans under 35 surpasses that of both active-duty service members and other civilians of the same ages, according to a Times analysis of state mortality records.
Scattered across the state, the veterans' deaths — 1,253 men and 110 women between 2006 and 2011 — are barely noticed in the mayhem of modern life.

A 27-year-old in San Diego crashes his motorcycle at 100 mph while drunk. A 32-year-old hooked on heroin overdoses in a restaurant bathroom in Tarzana.

A 28-year-old in Humboldt County shoots himself in the head in front of his best friend.
When viewed together, however, patterns emerge.

Veterans were more than twice as likely as other civilians to commit suicide. They were twice as likely to be a victim of a fatal motor vehicle crash and a quarter more likely to suffer other deadly accidents.

The phenomenon has been largely unstudied by the government, which has concentrated its research on active-duty service members.

  4. Anonymous sources are increasing in news stories, along with rather curious explanations

According to sources who didn’t insist on anonymity, more and more sources are speaking to the news media on the condition of anonymity for the oddest of reasons.

Politico, for example, reported a speech by Vice President Biden to a progressive group based on the account of a person who spoke anonymously “because the [speech was] by-invitation only.”

The New York Times said one of its sources for an article about Syria asked not to be identified “because of the delicacy of the situation.” The Times accorded anonymity to sources for the same reason — “because of the delicacy of the situation” — in six other articles this year, including one about a woman who fell off a balcony.

The Washington Post, in an article Saturday about the Redskins’ troubles, cited such mysterious sources as “several people familiar with the situation”; “multiple people close to the matter”; “several people with knowledge of the deliberations”; and “one person with ties to the team.” The sources, according to the article, spoke anonymously “because of the sensitivity of the situation.”

    Question: Does this help much?

It used to be that anonymous sources — Watergate’s “Deep Throat” was the most famous — spoke on the condition of anonymity because . . . well, because they wouldn’t speak to reporters any other way. Back then, anonymous sources were just “sources” and you, dear reader, had to take our word for whoever they were and whatever we said they said.

Readers noticed, and apparently didn’t like guessing about who was saying what. In 2004, the New York Times surveyed its subscribers on their concerns about the paper. In the wake of flawed (and often anonymously sourced) reporting before the start of the Iraq war, readers said their biggest gripe was the use of anonymous sources, and that it trumped political bias or even delivery problems, according to Margaret Sullivan, the paper’s current public editor.

“Frankly, this kind of sourcing is ridiculous,” says Alicia Shepard, a journalist and NPR’s former ombudsman. She adds: “I get it that [news organizations] are trying to be transparent, but it doesn’t enhance the believability of the anonymous quote. The only thing worthwhile about the convoluted sourcing explainers is how funny they are.”

In fact, such descriptions can do more harm than good, says Matt Carlson, an associate professor at St. Louis University and the author of “On Condition of Anonymity: Unnamed Sources and the Battle for Journalism,” published in 2011. Rather than enhancing a reader’s understanding, the descriptions used by reporters can be disingenuous and misleading about a source’s affiliation or motives, Carlson says.

He cites the classic misdirection case: Former New York Times reporter Judith Miller once agreed to identify one of her anonymous sources, I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney’s chief of staff, not as a senior White House official but as “a former congressional staffer,” a technically accurate but wholly misleading description.

    2. The 'anonymous sources' problem, cont.

In today's Washington Post, Paul Farhi revisits the long-standing problem of anonymous sourcing, which has become pervasive in recent years.

Marty Baron, the Post's executive editor, explains the reason for this: "As unpleasant as anonymity may be, very often the alternative is no information whatsoever," he tells Farhi. "Reporters are encouraged to negotiate to identify people as much as possible and to provide honest reasons for their anonymity. But there can be practical limits on what we can say.”

Quite right: There's no way to write a story about, say, President Obama's private meetings or internal frustrations at The New York Times without relying on sources who must speak off-the-record for fear of attribution. Any report worth its salt includes revelations, and revelations are bound to get someone in trouble.

The problem -- or one problem, anyway -- is that anonymity has come to be seen as a right, even by folks who have little to no justification for it. I can't tell you the number of times spokespeople from media organizations have asked that I attribute their carefully crafted remarks to "a network spokesperson" -- as if putting their name on the network's statements wasn't written into their title.

Then there was this official White House statement sent to every reporter in Washington requesting attribution to a "White House official," rather than, say, Jay Carney or Dan Pfeiffer.

It gets worse: I've called PR people for comment and had them tell me, "Off the record: No comment," which is an absurd impossiblity.

As Baron pointed out, the media are pretty powerless in most situations. If you want the story, you often have to take attribution on your sources' terms. But a little progress can be made by demanding clear-cut attribution where you can. That starts with press representatives and spokespeople. If they want to weigh in on the matter, tell them they have to go on the record.

Israel and the NSA: Partners in Crime
Documents hint Israelis behind attempt to eavesdrop on France – but America takes the blame

by Justin Raimondo, October 28, 2013

It wasn’t the US government breaking into the private communications of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, according to top secret documents unearthed by Edward Snowden and published in Le Monde – it was the Israelis.

A four-page internal précis regarding a visit to Washington by two top French intelligence officials denies the NSA or any US intelligence agency was behind the May 2012 attempted break-in – which sought to implant a monitoring device inside the Elysee Palace’s communications system – but instead fingers the Israelis, albeit indirectly:

The visit by Barnard Barbier, head of the DGSE’s technical division, and Patrick Pailloux, a top official with France’s National Information Systems Security, was intended to elicit an explanation for the break-in, which the French media blamed on the Americans. The NSA’s inquiries to the British, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, and other US allies all turned up negative. However, one such close ally wasn’t asked.

As Glenn Greenwald and Jacques Follorou, citing the NSA document, put it in their Le Monde piece: the NSA "’intentionally did not ask either the Mossad or the ISNU (the technical administration of the Israeli services) whether they were involved’ in this espionage operation against the head of the French government."

An interesting omission, to say the least, one justified by the author of the memo with some odd phraseology: "France is not an approved target for joint discussion by Israel and the United States." Meaning – exactly what? This is a job for Marcy Wheeler! But I’ll hazard a guess: the US is well aware of Israeli spying on France and wants nothing to do with it, and/or the author of the memo is simply invoking some obscure protocol in order to justify going any farther.

In any case, the Israeli connection to the NSA’s global spying network – including its all-pervasive surveillance inside the US – has been well-established by Greenwald’s previous reporting on the subject: a September 11 article detailing how the NSA shares raw intercepts from its data-dragnet with Israeli intelligence, scooping up purloined emails and other data – in effect giving the Mossad a "back door" into a treasure trove of information on the private lives and activities of American citizens.

The Guardian published a five-page memorandum of understanding between Tel Aviv and Washington, provided to Greenwald by Snowden: rife with references to the legal and constitutional constraints "pertaining to the protection of US persons," it goes on to state forthrightly that the Israelis are permitted access to "raw Sigint" – unredacted and unreviewed transcripts, Internet metadata, and the content of emails and telephonic communications. While the Israelis supposedly solemnly swear to not "deliberately" target any American citizen, the agreement explicitly rules out a legal obligation on the part of the Israelis to follow the rules:

“This agreement is not intended to create any legally enforceable rights and shall not be construed to be either an international agreement or a legally binding instrument according to international law."

  9. Larry Klayman crows on NSA win: ‘We hit the mother lode’

Larry Klayman’s long journey in the legal wilderness appears to be over.

Klayman, the conservative legal activist well-known in Washington political circles a decade ago for his no-holds-barred court battles against the Clinton administration, was thrust back into the spotlight Monday after he obtained the first major ruling from a federal judge that the National Security Agency’s surveillance program was constitutionally flawed.

“We hit the mother lode,” an elated Klayman said Monday, indulging in some of the hyperbole he became known for during his 1990s crusades. “It was the biggest decision in the context of the government in my lifetime. This is the most outrageous invasion of constitutional rights I’ve seen in my life.”

  10. NSA ruling fallout hits White House

n legal terms, a federal judge’s decision Monday questioning the constitutionality of the National Security Agency’s massive call-tracking program seems almost certain to have no practical significance.

In political terms, it comes at a critical time for the NSA and President Barack Obama.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard Leon’s ruling that the NSA’s metadata program appears to violate the Fourth Amendment was issued just three days after a review group established by Obama delivered its report proposing more than 40 changes to the federal government’s surveillance programs.

Obama was initially expected to dig through the reform proposals before Christmas and announce which ones he would adopt. However, the White House now says that process won’t be complete until sometime next month.

The delay gives Leon’s decision time to resonate and gives surveillance skeptics more time to pressure Obama to endorse significant reforms after Edward Snowden’s revelations about NSA surveillance practices.

The ruling also underscores the awkwardness of a president who won office in part by railing against the national security state established by President George W. Bush trying to defend much of that establishment while also maintaining his vow to restore civil liberties and bring an end to what seemed like a permanent war on terror.

Unlike many countries, prostitution in Israel is legal.

To many people it is shocking to learn that in the "Holy Land" prostitution is allowed.
Prostitution is legal, but what is not legal, is running a brothel or living off the earnings of a prostitute, in other words being a pimp.

Prostitution in Israel is not kept on the down low.
Everyone knows about it and where to go to find a prostitute.
It is a choice whether they decide to pay for sex or not.
Prostitutes are known to be discrete.
They do not go around talking about the men they have sex with.
Some of the places where prostitution is more popular is in cities like Tel Aviv and Haifa.
That could be because the population is more secular and not as religious.
Prostitutes can be found on the streets, strip clubs and "massage parlors."
Politicians, businessmen and even police officers are known to visit the upscale "massage parlors" and high price strip clubs.

Regular citizens are more likely to just look for a prostitute on the streets.

When Arab Israelis or Orthodox Jews, whether married or not, want to have sex with a prostitute, they go somewhere far from their homes.
The reason for them going far is so they will not be recognized by anyone.

One negative effect of the rising popularity of prostitution is that venereal diseases have
      rapidly increased over the years.

It is a dangerous world. Apparently, many have been shielded from that fact. One will never be as lonely as when he finds himself the target of his own government, without a chance of recourse. The Founders knew that the greatest threat to freedom and liberty would come from within the government. That is why they took the trouble of spending years drawing up a written constitution as a barrier to black hearted usurpers. In its infinite wisdom and love of "democracy", the public has engaged in the systematic dismantling of that barrier. And, Wow! What happened?

Canadian Protestant church joins boycott Israel campaign

According to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA), Canada’s largest Protestant church has launched a campaign to boycott goods made in the occupied West Bank.
The United Church of Canada campaign, dubbed
“Unsettling Goods: Choose Peace in Palestine and Israel”,
encourages “economic action” against three Israeli companies: Keter Plastic Ltd, SodaStream and Havana, which all have factories in the West Bank.

“With these efforts, we join with many others striving to bring peace with justice to the Holy Land,” the church’s moderator, Gary Paterson, wrote in a November letter to church members announcing the launch of the campaign.

Churchgoers are also urged to avoid retailers carrying the products, such as Canadian Tire, The Bay, Home Depot and Walmart.

    6. The notion of Judaism as a “race”, rather than a religion of various races, is without foundation.

The results of a recently published study by Israeli-American geneticist Dr Eran Elhaik at John Hopkins University have scientifically and genetically validated Sand’s research

The idea of a “nation race” was progressively developed and reinforced over centuries among segregated Jewish communities in Europe.

With the rise of German nationalism in the 19th century, Jewish historian Heinrich Graetz “retrospectively” crafted a discrete identity for the ghettoized people –  mapping their origin to an old kingdom and wandering exiles.
The exiles tales transpired from a Christian myth of “divine punishment” imposed on Jews for rejecting the new religion.

The parable is likely to have originated from the Old Testament story of Jews wandering the desert for disobeying God and worshipping a golden calf.
Christians propagated the concept of exile to lure “disobeying” Jews to the new religion, becoming their saviour from another eternal banishment.

Modern political Zionism, which otherwise rejects the Christian Bible, adopted the untested story of “Jewish exile” to establish a mythical linkage between European Jews and the Middle East.

But Jewish history tells us that the Romans did not expel the original Jews from Palestine when they crushed the Simon bar Kokhba revolt in 136 AD but instead barred them only from city of Jerusalem – and even then they were allowed to visit it during Tisha B’Av, the annual fasting day on the ninth day of the month of Av in the Hebrew calendar.

Under Christianity and during the Roman Empire a large number of native Jews converted to Christianity and, with the advent of Islam, most adopted the new religion and assimilated under the new power.

In addition to the descendants of the Canaanites, the original denizens before patriarch Abraham’s arrival from Mesopotamia, Sand concludes that today’s Muslim and Christian Palestinians are actually the true progenies of the original Jews.

  18. Israel’s Ron Prosor: self-righteousness personified

    By Alan Hart

In the song Mack the Knife there’s a line about a body on the sidewalk “oozing” life. Last night there was a body, a living one, oozing self-righteousness.

It was not on the sidewalk. It was at the speaker’s podium in the General Assembly. It was that of His Excellency Mr Ron Prosor, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, presenting lies as truth before the vote which overwhelmingly recognized Palestine as a non-member observer state.

Peace, he asserted, “is a central value of Israeli society”. He went on: “The Bible calls on us, ‘seek peace and pursue it’. Peace fills our art and poetry. It is a taught in our schools. It has been the goal of the Israeli people and every Israeli leader since Israel was re-established 64 years ago.”

Israel “wants peace on its own terms, terms which require the surrender of the occupied and oppressed Palestinians to Zionism’s will…”

What crap! (Dictionary definition: “excrement, rubbish, dirt, worthless nonsense”.)

But am I being fair to Prosor?
There’s a case for saying that I am not and it’s this.
The Zionist (not Jewish) states does want peace, has always wanted peace.
The problem is that it wants peace on its own terms,
    terms which require the surrender of the occupied and oppressed Palestinians to Zionism’s will;
terms which give the them the choice of accepting a few crumbs from Zionism’s table
or being removed from it in a final ethnic cleansing.

You are an enabler Allen, as are WiO and Bob (and in the past, I include myself). By recognizing rat at all you feed his pathologies. I noticed when Bob was absent for a couple days recently the rat dropping were reduced significantly. I realize its not easy. Although the longer posts are easy to scroll by, it takes about the same time to read as to scroll by the shorter ones. And while most of the short ones are redundant (or their relevance confusing), it is still tempting to mock.

Rat has become the endless loop, like the annoying static we see on older TVs when moved to a channel with no signal, his is the noise of the stream of ubiquitous microwave background radiation, cluttered and muddled, what some would call a rat's nest. The fact that the posts are in most cases merely redundant cut and paste adds to the effect. The rat and his posts contain their own entropy, initially loud and full of hot air they degrade to ambient temperature and soon will move to the inevitable death by ice.

That is unless you keep throwing logs on the fire. He needs the attention. But, even when he offers up a meaningful post or link these days, it is usually lost in the clutter that he spews here daily. As I said, the impulse to mock can become overwhelming at times, but in fact you merely feed his pathology.

If it is universal and comprehensive, it is prohibitively expensive and hence unaffordable.
The only way to make it universal and affordable is to ration services, but then the system is not comprehensive.
If it is comprehensive and affordable, it can be such only for those who can afford it, and hence not universal.
The problem with ObamaCare is not the broken promises. The problem is that it is inherently undeliverable.

    2. The key question is the identification of a regime that practices systematic oppression and domination by one group over another.

How then does it apply to Israel?

To answer that, we need to clarify another concept: Israel.

Although usually seen as residing within its pre-1967 boundaries, the Israeli regime exercises control over Palestinians in the occupied territories of the West Bank and Gaza.

For the past 46 years, all residents within greater Israel have lived under the same regime, which claims to be the sole legitimate political and military authority.

The state controls the territory between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, ruling over eight million rights-bearing citizens (75% of whom are Jews) and four million Palestinian subjects denied civil and political rights. Millions of Palestinian refugees (who were born in the territory or whose direct ancestors were) cannot set foot in their homeland, let alone determine its political future as citizens.

      Delete
    3. Three key features characterize Israeli apartheid:

      • Four million Palestinians in the Occupied Territories lack the right to vote for the government that controls their lives through a military occupation.

In addition to controlling the borders, air space, water, tax revenues, and other vital matters pertaining to the Occupied Territories,
Israel alone issues the identity cards that determine the ability of Palestinians to work and their freedom of movement.

      • About 1.2 million Palestinian Israelis, who make up 20 percent, or one-fifth, of Israel’s population, have second-class citizenship within Israel, ...
... which defines itself as a Jewish state rather than a state for all its citizens.

More than 20 provisions of Israel’s principal laws discriminate, either directly or indirectly, against non-Jews, according to Adalah: The Legal Center for Minority Rights in Israel.

Millions of Palestinians remain refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and elsewhere, unable to return to their former homes ...
... and land in present-day Israel.

Even though the right of return for refugees is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

  28. Why does Israel have operatives in the US?

In 2012, there were 34,139 Saudi students enrolled in American universities. Polling shows that significant numbers have no interest in making friends with their classmates and many express private statements openly hostile to the US. Eventually, most will return to the old neighborhood, where they might become Israel's problem.

This would also explain, in part, why Israel would do R&D for NSA. Through use of NSA's assets, Israel can monitor America's Saudi student guests easily. It can also connect dots from these sources to international dots. Israel is looking for links. See: LINKED (2003), Barabasi.

Record number of foreign students in U.S.

It would be reasonable to ask why Israel does not leave such internal matters to the US. As some may recall, on two occasions the Russians called US counterparts and advised them to take heed of the lead Boston bomber. Now, when the Russians go to this much trouble, one ought to pay attention. Did the FBI? The Boston police say, no.

    1. Home Demolitions: By the Numbers

Since 1967, Israel has destroyed approximately 27,000 Palestinian structures in the occupied territories
(the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip), including more than 24,000 homes, according to ICAHD.

Since the renewal of negotiations in August 2013, Israel has destroyed approximately 25 Palestinian homes,
in addition to dozens of other structures, leaving approximately 200 people homeless.

According to the UN, between January and September 2013, 862 Palestinians were displaced by Israeli demolitions,
compared to 886 (including 468 children) in all of 2012.

In 2012, a total of 600 Palestinian structures were demolished by Israel in the occupied territories,
including at least 189 homes, according to ICAHD.
This figure doesn’t include “self-demolitions” whereby Palestinians destroy their own homes ...
rather than have Israel do it and charge them an additional fine.

One Bedouin village, Al-Araqib, in the Negev desert in the south of Israel, has been destroyed more than 50 times by Israel since July 2010.

Between 2005 and 2012, Israel demolished approximately 1500 Palestinian homes due to owners lacking hard-to-obtain construction permits.

Between 1993 and 2000, when the Oslo Accords were being negotiated between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization,
Israel destroyed almost 1700 Palestinian homes in the occupied territories.

Immediately following Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza in 1967,
approximately 6000 Palestinian homes were demolished, including four entire villages in the Latrun area,
along with dozens of homes in the Mughrabi Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City,
which were destroyed to make way for a plaza for the Western Wall.

In 1971, between 2000 and 6000 Palestinian homes were destroyed in Gaza in an effort to pacify the newly occupied territory.

      During Israel’s creation (1948-49),
Zionist and then Israeli forces expelled approximately 750,000 Palestinian Arabs from their ancestral lands
in order to create a Jewish majority state of Israel.

In the process, more than 400 Palestinian population centers were systematically destroyed, including thousands of homes, businesses, and houses of worship.

The Moving Target, on the Trail of Chapito Isidro

Chapito Isidro: A Moving Target- RioDoce

After being placed on the most-wanted list by the United States, the objective of capturing him does not stop.

The Mochis. - the morning of October 13, in Nayarit, it was announced that the federal Government had launched an offensive to capture the leader of the organization.
Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, “El Chapo Isidro”, was on the verge of being captured that morning during the posboda (post wedding celebration) of one of his sisters, who was celebrating her wedding in the paradise resort of Santa María de el Oro.

The wedding was on Saturday and the posboda that night, the organized crime leader was a no-show. Isidro is one of the most wanted by the governments of Mexico and the United States.

But at midnight Sunday he arrived at the fandango, finding the celebration continuing with banda music and the musical company of the popular folk minstrel of the narcos, Remmy Valenzuela.

Two hours after Isidro Meza arrived on the scene, ground vehicles and helicopters arrived with elements of the Marina, provoking a confrontation, resulting in a singer by the name of Remigio Alejandro Valenzuela Buelna sustaining injuries.

An alleged gunman died in the conflict,
in addition to the arrest of at least seven municipal police forces who were guarding the celebration venue.

In fact, anonymous sources consulted in Guasave, el Chapito Isidro was also injured,
with two bullet wounds, although he managed to escape.

In January 2013, the Department of the Treasury of the United States listed Meza Flores and several of his family and alleged accomplices as part of a criminal organization (Kingpin Designation Act).

With that, the U.S. Government officially gave, the category of most wanted criminal organization which they identify as a rival of the Sinaloa cartel, headed by Joaquín el Chapo Guzmán.

Also identified as a leader of that cartel is Fausto Isidro Meza Flores, el Chapito Isidro, and the list included seven members of his family and three companies within the criminal group.

According to the press release, the Meza Flores group emerged in Guasave, Sinaloa,
and since the decade of 2000 to 2010, they are responsible for smuggling into the United States
large quantities of methamphetamine, heroin, marijuana and cocaine, according to the information office.

Since then, they have been in violent conflict with the Sinaloa cartel,
led by the most wanted drug trafficker in Mexico, El Chapo Guzman,
which has resulted in many deaths in the State.

    In addition to the leader of the cartel, the Treasury Department recognized as drug traffickers;
    the wife of Meza Flores, Araceli Chan Inzunza;
    his father, Fausto Isidro Meza;
    the mother, Angelina Flores;

      The Hostilities

The Northern part of the state is one of the most patrolled by federal forces,
predominantly by the army. This has led to clashes between military forces and criminal groups.

Just ten days ago, a clash between soldiers and gunmen took place in the district of El Burrión,
Guasave, one of the bastions of the organization that El Chapo Isidro controls.

They seized guns, an armored vehicle, and a tiger that, according to the locals, goes by the name of Bruno. It was a warning.

The morning of Thursday December, 12th Ignacio Gonzalez Peñuelas,”Nacho”,
brother of Jesus Chuy Gonzalez Peñuelas,
considered number two in the criminal structure of the Guasave BLO cell by local law enforcement authorities, was arrested in a shootout with soldiers, in their home area of Batamote, Guasave.

El Nacho, alleged chief of the Guasave killings and who allegedly controlled drug sales,
collection of piso de plaza (extortion fees), and dozens of assassins,
this according to statements given by low level dealers arrested previously.

He had the zone under his control and influence and he was responsible for the area from the field 38, in Juan José Ríos, up to the limits of the municipality of Sinaloa, to the West of the international highway Mexico 15.

At the time of his arrest, there was an arrest issued against him for federal crime.
The criminal charge was not revealed.

Gonzalez Peñuelas, lost his freedom along with their accomplices,
      Marcos Eduardo Félix Arredondo,
      José Cruz Pérez Vega and
      Hugo Moreno Sarmiento,
Moreno was transferred for medical attention to a hospital that for security reasons was not disclosed, Attorney general of Justice of the State, Marco Antonio Higuera Gomez revealed at a press conference.

Alejandro Rivera Montoya, identified by an identification he was carrying on his person,
      died in the military operation.
However, his identity will be confirmed by those claiming the body and the testimonials of the bereaved.
He was dead in the Miguel Hidalgo Street opposite the 04872 post and a drain,
where initiated and concluded the fight with military forces.

Also seized at the site was armament of conventional war:
      nine offensive grenades caliber. 40,
      four hand (fragmentation) grenade,
a rifle Barret caliber 50 mm,
      a rifle HK-19,
two AK-47 rifles known as "goat horn",
      a carbine AR-15,
a 10 gauge rifle, and a Magnum revolver caliber. 45,
as well as nearly three thousand cartridges for the seized weapons,
some of them expansive, three vehicles and 15 kilos of narcotics.

According to the facts narrated in inquiry that the Attorney General of Justice of the State initiated through the crime of homicide, the end of Nacho González and his group,
began around 11:40 hours of Thursday 12 December when a military command noticed a group of suspicious people.

With assault weapons they gunned down the soldiers, who repelled the assault.
A pursuit ensued that culminated at a house,
where the four subjects were arrested and a fifth individual died.

After the fact, the Batamote area was cordoned off by dozens of ministerial,
      municipal and effective military.

In the evening, calm returned to the village.

Higuera Gomez was reserved in establishing of which criminal group the detainee and his accomplices belonged, as the public prosecutor of the Republic is required to make this clear,
he retains the case since weapons and drugs were detected. "We only act for the reported killing, and described here is what the agent of the public prosecutor of the common jurisdiction had before.

He did not reveal the possibility that the detained group had participated in the killing of policemen in several ambushes perpetrated in the municipality of Guasave, Sinaloa, and a home, and the summary executions of civilians.

  30. What do France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Canada, Australia, All of the Scandinavian countries, and, in fact, every other major industrialized country in the world have in common?

Excellent healthcare for All of their citizens, of course.

And, even more interesting, none of those countries have seemed to have had any problems with "Affordability." We probably won't, here, either - inasmuch as the CBO has stated that the Obamacare law is Budget Positive.

    13. In fact, due to the idiot republican governors that are denying 5 Million people access to Federal-funded expanded Medicaid, Obamacare will be even more positive - I'm guessing somewhere over $25 Billion/yr more budget-positive.

I assume you are talking of the story where the CBO estimate was coming in like $190 billion or something like that under the Obama budget estimate. What is left out of the equation (correct me if I am wrong) is that the budget they are talking of was off of a base that recognized the increase in the CBO estimate of $800-$900 billion that took place in 2011 that just about doubled the 10 year cost of the ACA.

Budget positive to my mind is like one of those neologisms they come up with in D.C., a place where you can spend hundreds of billions more than you did the year before and you can still call it a 'budget cut'.

To some in the real world it is funny. Not ha ha funny but funny nonetheless.

  32. THE AMERICANS WITH NO ABILITIES ACT

President Barack Obama and Senate Democrats are considering sweeping legislation that will provide new benefits for many Americans.

The Americans With No Abilities Act (AWNA) is being hailed as a major legislative goal by advocates of the millions of Americans who lack any real skills or ambition.

"Many Americans do not possess the competence and drive necessary to carve out a meaningful role for themselves in society," said California Sen. Barbara Boxer. "We can no longer stand by and allow People of Inability (POI) to be ridiculed and passed over."

With this legislation, employers will no longer be able to grant special favors to a small group of workers, simply because they know what they are doing."

In a Capitol Hill press conference, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid pointed to the success of the U.S. Postal Service, which has a long-standing policy of providing opportunity without regard to performance.

At the state government level, the Department of Motor Vehicles also has an excellent record of hiring people with no abilities (63 percent).

Under AWNA, more than 25 million mid-level positions will be created, with important-sounding titles but little real responsibility, thus providing a sense of purpose without the distraction of any performance.

Mandatory non-performance-based raises and promotions will be given to guarantee upward mobility for even the most unremarkable employees.

The legislation provides substantial tax breaks to corporations that promote a significant number of Persons of Inability (POI) into middle-management positions, and gives a tax credit to small and medium-sized businesses that agree to hire one clueless worker for every two talented hires.

Finally, AWNA contains tough new measures to make it more difficult to discriminate against the non-abled, banning, for example, discriminatory interview questions such as, "Do you have any skills or experience that relate to this job?"

"As a non-abled person, I can't be expected to keep up with people who have something going for them," said Billy Joe Gertz, who lost his position as a lug-nut twister at the GM plant in Flint, Michigan, due to his inability to remember "righty tighty, lefty loosey." Gertz continued, "This new law should be real good for people like me. I'll finally have job security." With the passage of this bill, Gertz and millions of others will finally see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Said Sen. Dick Durbin: "As a senator with no former private service abilities, I believe the same privileges that elected officials enjoy ought to be extended to every American with no abilities. It is our duty as lawmakers to provide each and every American citizen, regardless of his or her attitude, with some sort of space to take up in this great nation and a good salary for doing so."
